Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June s, 1915.
Application filed October 28, 1910. Serial No. 589,559.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE M. MATHISEN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Attaching Handles to Containers, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to handle-attaching means of the character disclosed in the pat with the wall, and which holdsthe handle and its clip closely alongside the container.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a Side elevation of a canprovided with a handlerattaching means embodying the features of my invention. Fig. "2 is a fragmentary side elevation ofthe container,
showing the attaching means in side elevation. Fig. 3 1s a vertlcal central section through the attaching means and ,a portion. of the container, taken in the plane of 11116 3 3, Fig.2. Fig. A is a Sectional view of the parts separated. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a modification. Figs.'7 and 8 are diagrammatic views of the two forms, showing the positions the parts assume'when clenched together.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a container provided with handles B of any suitable form. As herein shown, the handles are in the form of a closed loop, and comprise portions B adapted to be gripped in the hand, and bars 13 at the opposite side of the loop adapted to be engaged by the attaching means. I
The attaching means comprises a clip 1 consisting of a piece of sheet metal bent double, in the present instance, to provide a loop 2 adapted to encircle the bar B of the handle. The end portions 3 and A of the said piece of sheet metal have openings 5 and 6 formed therethrough. In forming the opening 5 suitable tools may be used to provide a flange surrounding the edge of the opening, said flange extending through the opening 6, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4c. The wall of the container A has an 5 openlng A formed therein adapted to receive the flange 7 upon the clip 1 when the, parts are assembled, and said wall has an inwardly extending flange, A surrounding. the opening A. and adapted to. telescope 6 with the flange 7.
Suitable means is provided for holding the flange7 in the opening. A inthe wall A, and for closing the openings in said wall and in the clip lto prevent the escapeo'f 6 material therethrough. This means in the present instance comprises a securing mem her 8 formed in two sections, the cup .section 9 having an outstanding annular flange 10 at its edge, which flange is engaged by 7 an overlying annular. flange 11 at the edge of the disk section 12 of said securing member. The parts of the member '8 are thus held securely together.
In securing the clip 1 to the side of a con- 7 tainer, the flange 7 on said clip is inserted through the opening A in the container, as hereinbefore described, and the securing member 8 is inserted in the openings 5 and 6 in the clip 1 from the inner side of the 8 container. Then the parts are thus brought together, the flange 7 on the clip and the flange A on the container wall lie within the flange 11 at the edge of the section 12 of the securing member 8. 8
When the parts are in the position just described, the flanges 7, A and 11 and the edge of the cap 6 are clamped or compressed together as shown in Figs. 3 and 7 by any suitable means not shown. In thus 9 compressing said parts, the edges of the flanges 7 and A are spread outwardly to interlock with the inturned flange 11 upon the cap, and the parts are thus rigidly secured together. The cup section 9 assists 9 in holding the flange 7 in place.
In the modified form illustrated in Figs. 6 and 8, a flange 13 is formed on the member A of the clip 1, said flange surrounding the opening 6 and telescoping with the flange 7. When this form of clip is used, the flange A? upon the container wall is omitted. It will be understood that a suitable securing member such as 8 will be used to lock the clip to the container wall in the manner 1 hereinbefore described.
' In near to hold'the upper portion of the clip and the handle'B closely alongside the container, I provide-one or more stiffening ribsl l on the clip, said ribs acting as braces to prevent the clip from bending outwardly away from the can. These ribs 1d are formed in the present instance by providing While I .havefhereinb f lre describ d my in Fig. 5.
straightened portions-of the sheet; metal at the point Where the loop Zmerges into the thereof, and lies closely alongside the can.
When the parts of the attaching means are clenched together an absolutely fluid-tight joint is formed.
invention in considerable detail, I recognize the fact that the form and proportion of:
certain of the'parts may be changed with outdeparting fromthe spiritand scope of the invention. l-thereforezdo not Wish to be limited to the exact details herein shown and described.
I I claim as my invention 3 n The combination of a container having an opening in one 'Wall, a handle-engaging member lying along the outer face of said Wall and hating a similar sized 'opening' therein registering with the opening in said Wall, said handle-engaging member having a laterally extending annular fiange integral therewith at the edge of the opening therein said flange fitting in and extending through the opening in the container Wall,
and a securing member positioned at the inher side of the container Wall and arranged to'closethe' opening therein, said securing member comprising a cup-shaped element projecting outwardly through said opening and fitting Within said flange'to assist in holding tl e latterin place, and a disk ele- Inent closing the cup and having an; annular nteg a fl n e run g bou p phe y and engaging thejoup elementto secure'said elements together, the last mentioned 7 flange r un in e n r e e f h flan e 0 the handle-engagingmember the parts be-v ngrc'o pr ed to i d y ter k th 'm gether,
In est ne 7y 7 whereof I signature I Witnesses: 7 n n MaEnrorcsoN,
