SUPERHEATER.
Spccication of Letters Patent.
Patented June e, 1915.
Application led July 25,.'1914. Serial No. 853,198.
' T0 all 'whom t may concern: I
Be 'it known that l, SOLOMON Tnrrr, a
i citizen of the United States, residing at La J unta, in the county of Otero and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Im pi'ovements in Superheaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to superheaters for locomotive and other steam boilers,'andv its objects are to provide a super-heater which is disposed in use Within the boiler, and hence is directly, constantly and uniformly heated and not subjected to rapid fluctuations of temperatureta diiliculty attending the use of outside heaters, which at the same p of high temperature, which may be applied to existing 'boilers without material, if any, alterations in the structurethereof, Which is practically ivater-prooflagainst leakage and operates Without interfering with the free production and flow of steam or with repairs to the interior of the boiler; and which is so constructed and arranged as to insure a reliable and eilicient superheating action.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a locomotive boiler, shovvingi the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatical top plan view partly in seotion, of the superheater removed from the boiler. Figs. 3 and 1 are cross sections on the lines 3-3 and 4-4 of Fig. 1. la..
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the locomotive boiler embodying the usual steam dome 2, throttle 3, and steam supply pipe 4, through which the steamis discharged from the dome for supply to thecylinders through final conductor pipes 5.
The superheater is arranged in the line of feed of the steam between the stand pipe 4 and nal delivery pipes 5,- and includes a 'main conducting pipe or tube 6, which extends longitudinallv Within the boiler'and is tapped at its inlet end 7 to receive the delivery end of the pipe 4. and is provided at its, delivery end 8 With a. T-conneotion or union,4
forming an intervening steam space or oompartment 12. The diametrically opposite sides of the tube or pipe 6 are formed with openings 13 and 14, While the diametrically opposite sides of the compartmented portion 12 of said pipe are provided with openings 15 and 16. .Arranged on opposite'sides ot' the said central, longitudinally extending pipe or tube 6 are circulating or heating coils or loops 17 and 18. Each of these coils or loops 17 and 18 is ofsimilar construction, and preferably comprises an outer, continuous longitudinally extending tube 18 and a pair of front and rear inner longitudinally extending tubes 19 and 20, the relatively outer ends of the tubes 18, 19 and 20 being apertured or provided with ports connecte'd by suitable unions 21 and clamps 22, whereby said pipes are held assembled, the inner ends of the pipes 19 and 2O being connected with the pipe 6 by suitable clamps 23.
ln practice. the central pipe and the loops or coils 18 are suitably fastened within the boiler 1, and the coils`17 and 18 are arranged rin-opposite sides vof the longitudinal cent-eroi the boiler, so as to be direotlyvheated therefrom. It will thus be evident that all of the parts of the superheater will be contained Within the boiler and maintained at a constant and uniform temperature` thus overcoming the obof the boiler, which" are subjected often to rapid temperature changes. The inner end of the pipe 9 of the coil 17 is apertured to receive a union 24 which is also iitted Within the opening 13 in the inlet end 7 of the pipe 6, While the inner end or" the pipe 20 of the coil 17 is apertured to receive a union 25 which is fitted Within the aperture oi the pipe 6. The inner end of the pipe 19 of the coil 18 is apertiired to receive a union 2 7 which is vfitted Within the opening 16 of the pipe 6, while the inner end of the pipe 20 of the coil 18 is apertured to receive a union 28 which isfitted Within the aperture 14 of `the pipe 6, thesaid unions being threaded or atw otherwise secured in position and "priming conductors fonthe flow ot steer-:z between the if" receiving and delivery portions of the main pipe 6 through the coils 17 and 18 1n such va manner as to provide a circulating chant length to insure r'the steam in Athe cylinder. tion', evi
nel ot compar the thorough its iioiv from i From tire foregoing do dent that steam flowing from the stand pipe y 4: first enters the inlet end 7 of the pipe 6, thence 'flows laterally through the union 24 to theinner end of the pipe section 19 of the coil 17, thence rearwardly through said pipe 'into the rear enl ofV the pipe 18 of said Coil,
thenceforwardly through said pipe 18 and into the forwardv end of the pipe 20 of the coil 17, thence rearwardly through said coil and through the outlet 25 into the distributing chamber 20 ofthe pipe 6, and thence through the union 27 and pipes'lt), 18 and 20 of the coil 18 and union 28 into the deintense heat of the coils, which are directlyl inclosed Within the boiler, so thatthe`steam will be superheated to a high degree and discharged in a dry state and at a high temperature intotheengine cylinders for action, the supply of dry steam of high temperature and pressure tothe cylinders being thereby insured. The .advantage of this type vof su` perheater' in this' respect will therefore be readily apparent and appreciated.
It Will be observed that the construction 'described adapts the` device to b'e arranged directly within the boiler to receive the direet heat therefroni'and so that the superheater will not be subjected to'rapid temperature changes, as is the casewith outside superheaters. It. will also be evident that the device may be arranged within the boiler so that it will not `be subjected to Working strains, and is not therefore liable to leak or get out of order. evident that the device may be so arranged that it can be installed upon any locomotive or other steam boiler without changeset any consequence, if at all, in the construction of the boiler, and that when disposed for use itwill also permit the removal oi' the tubes or other parts of the boiler forrepairs and other purposes, without interference.y
A superheater comprising a main pipe having an inlet end and a delivery end separated by an intervening compartment, coils at opposite sides of said main pipe, each It Will be further comprising a continuous outer tube anda y pair of inner tubes communicating at their outer ends with the ends of the outer tube, connections between the delivery inner tube of one coil and the receiif'inginner tube of the other coil and the said compartment of the'main pipe, and connections between the inner ends of the other 'inner tubes of the Vcoils and the inlet and delivery endsof thel main pipe, respectively. u
In testimony whereof I aliix my s1gnature in presence of two witnesses..
