To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID E. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaynesboro, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dehorners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a dehorner of that type adapted for removing the horns of cattle, and the main object of the same is to provide an implement of this class that may be readily applied either to a right or left horn in a fixed position during application thereof and embodying a rotary saw for expeditiously severing a horn without liability of crushing the latter and subjecting the animal to but momentary pain, but no injury.
A further object of the invention is to so position the shaft or spindle of the severing or cutting element embodied in a dehorner organization that it may be readily shifted to and from a horn and which is adapted to be actuated or driven by power generated by independent means or mechanism and transmitted to the shaft or spindle of the said element, or said shaft or spindle may be directly operated by a crank, either op-l erating means being shiftable past the horn v lengaged without contact with ythe latter or interruption of the operation of the severing or cutting element.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the V construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dehorner embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same partially broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
The improved dehorner embodies essentially a frame comprising a pair of frame bars 5 and an inclosing casing 6 which is curved or arcuate and provided with opposing slots 7 in the sides thereof extending from the centers of the said sides toward 59 the frame bars. The casing is fully open .between and is secured to the inner opposing sides of the said frame bars 5, the latter serving as handles or grip means for the implement and having the casing 6 located nearer the one set of ends of the said framev than the other set of ends of the latter.- The ends of the frame bars 5 secured to the sides of the casing 6 are preferably formed with angular extensions or offsets 8, and the edges of the casing and the bars 5 adjacent to the said extensions or offsets are formed with concavities 9 to adapt said parts to fit over and conform to the surfaces of different sizes of horns. A clamping bar 10 is pivotally connected at one end to each of the angular extensions or osets 8, and each of these clamping bars has an inner concavity or recess 11 corresponding to the concavities 9 in the frame bars 5 and edges of the casing 6 secured thereto. The clamping bars 10 are free to move outwardly from and inwardly toward the frame bars 5 and each carries a locking bar 12 which is pivoted thereto and provided with teeth 13 on the inner edge in such close relation as to render the adjustment of the clamping bars 10 readily variable in order to accommodate the difference in the diameters of horns to which the implement may be applied. The locking bars 12 project between the frame bars 5 and each is adapted to engage a pin 14 projecting inwardly from the adjacent frame bar so that the clamping bars 10 may be locked against movement when the implement has been applied and properly adjusted relatively to a horn desired to be severed or cut off.
A circular saw 15 is movably mounted within the casing 6 and has a shaft or spindle 16 which projects through the slots 7 in the sides of the casing, and connected to the outwardly projecting ends of the shaft or spindle are the free ends of the saw shifting or adjusting levers17 each fulcrumed on the casing, as at 18, and intermediately angularly bent as at 19 to dispose the said levers in such manner that they will have an ample throw without resorting to ay maximum projection thereof away from the remaining parts of the dehorner. One projecting end of the shaft or spindle 16 will y have a flexible shaft or flexible power transmitting means 2O secured thereto, as shown bv dotted lines in Fig. 1, or any other suitable operating means mav be applied to this projecting end of the shaft or spindle 16, and it will be seenthat the slots 7 are so located that when the saw 15 is shifted or thrown forward between the inner open side of the casing and frame bars 5 against the horn adapted yto' be severed, the portion of shaft 16 adjacent to the horn will clear the latter and permitting a convenient and expeditious cutting operation. It will also be observed that the concavities or recesses 9 and 11 are located outwardly beyond Athe center of the casing 6 so that the clearance of the horn by the operating means for the shaft as just explained may be readily effected. The flexibleshaft or other Vpower transmitting device :2O may extend away from the dehorner to any suitable point or be connected up to a motor of a portable character as may be found desirable and necessary, butin all applications of the driving power the purpose is lto rapidly rotate the saw 15 so as to cut the horn regularly and expeditiously without in the least crushing the latter',jand subjecting the animal to but momentary pain or suffering while the operation isperformed, regardless of movement of the head.` The free extremities of the clamping levers 10 are readily movable between the shifting or f adjusting levers 17 and it will be understood Y said levers 10 are then locked by causing the 7 that when the clamping levers 10 are to be moved the locking bars 12 are first thrown back or disengaged from their pins 14.
In the operation of the implement in severing or removing a horn the clamping levers 10 are released and drawn outwardly a suflicient distance to clear 4the horn and permit the latter to be disposed in line with and engage in ythe concavities 9.adjacent to the point where it is desired to sever or cut the horn.v The clamping levers are then forced inwardly against the horn or until the concavities or recesses 11 engage the horn at points opposite the concavities 9, and
bars 1.2 to engage the 4pins 14. The saw 15 is then rotated and shifted toward the horn through the medium of the levers 17 and .the horn gradually severed, thesawvmoving between the frame bars 5 and clamping levers 10, and after complete severance of the horn the said saw is again thrown outwardly fully within the casing 6, when it may be caused to cease to rotate. If it is desired to remove the opposing horn of the animal it is onlynecessary to move the implement over to the oppositeside of the ani- ,mals Ahead which places the opposite portion of the casing next to the head, and per form the same operation, the improved device or dehorner being readily applicable eitherin right or left positions. y
The arrangement of the bars'as hereinbefore explained is of course preferred, but it `will be understood that the'particu'lar illustration and'description of lthe same refer to only onepractical embodiment ofthe invention and it is proposed to use suitable metal in the construction of all the parts of the implement or dehorner, and if it is necessary to vary the size, ,proportionsand general dimensions of the parts to adapt the implement to different applications, such changes will be made as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims, but in view of the fact that the clamping levers 10 have an extended range of adjustment, one
implement constructed in accordance with the features of the invention may be made to practically serve in severing or removing all sizes of horns and also `be applied to various animals whether large orV small. v
What is claimed is: Y Y
1. In-a dehorner,-the combination of supporting means, adjustable clamping devices cooperating therewith, the supporting means in part. and the clamping devices having opposedV horn engaging cavities, and a swinging rotary saw'mounted in the supporting means and Vmovable vbetween the V vcoperating with a portion of the supportw horner yin fixed applied position, a rotary A saw vmounted in the supporting means, and shifting levers connected to the saw to swing the latter outwardly between the clamping devices vto sever the lhorn held between the said clamping devices and supporting means.
4. 'In a dehorner, 'the combination of supporting means, ,adjustable clamping devices coperating with a portion of the supporting means to engage a horn and hold lthe dehorner in fixed applied position, a rotary saw shiftably mounted in the supporting means and movable outwardly Abetween the clamping devices, and levers engaging the extremities of the saw shaft andoperativeV V to shiftithe saw during its rotation.
