Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 25, 1215.
Application filed July 23, 1914. Serial No. 852,674.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. GRAEBE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sign and Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are to provide a sign and holder therefor for repeated employment; and to provide a frame for said sign, for maintaining a neat appearance.
Drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sign, a sign-staif, socket and locking screw therefor, constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section taken as on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1, one of the framing leaves of the sign being open, and the staff being omitted.
Descripti0n.As seen in the drawings, the staff 8 is constructed from neat and relatively small strap iron, the outer end 9 of said staff being ornamented, and the inner end provided with a slightly rounded and chamfered surface 10. Adjacent the chamfered surface 10, a stop pin 11 is driven into said staff to impinge on the housing 12 of a socket plate 13 when said staff is adjusted to service position. Intermediate the stop pin 11 and the chamfered end 10, the stafi 8 is provided with a tapped perforation to receive the threaded end of a screw 14. The screw 14 is provided with a knurled head 15 and a relatively thick shank 16. The shank 16 forms a bearing to rest on the face of the housing 12 to draw said staff and face of the housing together when said screw is set up. The plate 13 is mounted permanently on the building or standing structure, the fastening devices 17 of any conventional and approved type being employed for this purose. p Adjacent the outer end of the staff 8, and in spaced relation, are formed perforations 18, through which extends one loop of each of the hangers 19. The other loop of each hanger is passed through perforations in a back plate 20. The plate 20 is provided to form a rest for placards 21, which in service are held on the back plate 20 by opencentered frames 22. The frames 22 are each provided with hinge knuckles 23 to receive a hinge pin 24. The plate 20 is furnished with hinge knuckles 25, disposed as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawings,'between the knuckles 23 of the frames. The hinge joints thus produced are formed at the bottom of the frames and plate. The frames are held in upright position closed upon said plates and said placards 21, by a latch 26, which latch is mounted, by means of a pivot pin 27, on the plate 20. To accommodate the hinge tabs 28 of the latch 26, the frames 22 are cut away to form recess 29, as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawings. To accommodate in a similar manner the hangers 19, the frames 22 may be cut away to form recesses 30.
When provided with a sign and holder constructed and arranged as above described, it is obvious that such signs as are commonly used in real estate transactions, having placard such as illustrated in the drawings, having the legend For sale or For rent, may be frequently applied to a standing structure without marring the same. This is accomplished by inserting the end of the staff 8 having the chamfered surface 10, until the pin 11 rests against the end of the housing 12. The screw 14 is then placed in position, and by means of the head 15 secured firmly, thereafter holding rigidly the staff 8 in operative position. If it is desired at any time to remove or replace the placards 21 without removing the frames or staff, this may be accomplished by raising the latch 26 to free the frames 22, which will then turn on the hinge pins 24 to a lowered position, exposing the plate 20 to receive a new placard, or, if desired, to have painted thereon a new symbol. When the placard is positioned on the plate 20, the frames 22 are relifted to their normal position, and the latch 26 is lowered to engage and hold the same.
When it is desired to remove the sign from the standing structure, this is quickly and readily accomplished by releasing the screw 14 and removing the same from engagement with the housing 12 and the stafi' 8. The staff 8 is then withdrawn from engagement with said housing and removed from the standing structure.
Claim:
A sign and holder comprising an elongated stafi; a sign. plate; hangers pivotally connecting said staff and said plate, said hangers being disposed at the top edge of said plate; a plurality of open=centered frames pivotally mounted upon said plate, said frames folding on said plate, for covering the opposite sides adjacent the edges thereof; and a latch pivotally mounted on said plate atithe top edge thereof and embodying side members adapted to overlie said plate and said frames for retaining said frames closed position, said frames having portions oftheir top edges cut away to avoid said hangers and the pivot ends of said latch.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
