NIBS FROM THE DIE-CYLINDERS OF RECORD-STRIP GOMPOSING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1915.
Application filed November 13, 1914. Serial No. 871,919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK SALLY, a citi- Zen of the United States, and resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Mechanism for Removing Nibs from the Die- Cylinders of Record-Strip Composing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to composing machines for producing the perforated record strips which are used as a controlling medium in monotype casting apparatus, my invention having particular reference to means for removing the paper punchings or nibs from the die cylinder, or nib receptacle, of the strip-perforating mechanism.
The object of my invention is to provide a pneumatic means under the control of keyboard devices whereby the progressive operation of the composing machine periodically actuates such means to efiect and insure the removal of the nibs from the die cylinder or nib receptacle.
In the preferred form of embodiment of my invention 1 provide the die cylinder, or nib receptacle, with a discharge pipe and connect the usual air chest of the composing machine with said cylinder, or receptacle, by means of a suitable duct equipped with a valve which is operatively connected with a movable element under the control of one or more of the keys of the machine (in this case the resetting key or the justification keys) whereby when such key or keys is or are manipulated the resulting movement transmitted to said element, shifts the valve to open communication between the pressure chest and the die cylinder or nib receptacle, the pressure thus entering the latter and forcing the therein contained nibs into and through the discharge pipe to a convenient point of discharge.
In another form of my invention I omit the pipe connection between the die cylinder and the pressure chest, and connect the discharge pipe with an exhaust engine, such, for example, as a fan or pump, which discharge pipe is equipped with a key-controlled valve similarly to the pressure pipe in the other construction.
The invention comprises various features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a sectional end elevation of a monotype composing machine embodying the principle of my invention, only so much of the machine being represented as is necessary to illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partially in section, of the die cylinder and adjacent parts, showing the connection of the pressure and discharge pipes with the cylinder. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, as on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. f is a sectional detail of the controlling valve of the air pressure pipe, as on the line 4.--4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 illustrates a modified form of my invention, wherein the nibs are removed by suction.
10 designates the supporting frame, and 11 the perforated die cylinder thereon into which the nibs from the paper ribbon are punched in the formation of the record strip. The ribbon is progressively fed under the cylinder from a supply-roll 12 to a suitable take-up roll 13; the ribbon-feed including pin Wheels 14: mounted at the respective ends of the cylinder on a shaft 15 which extends axially through the cylinder. This cylinder is open on top, for access thereto. and is provided with a detachable coverplate 16.
17 designates the series of vertical punches by means of which the ribbon is perforated, which punches are carried by punch bars 18 operatively connected with pneumatic devices under the control of a key-board mechanism in the usual manner. These pneumatic devices include an elongated chest 19 which constitutes a pressure chamher to which compressed air is delivered from a suitable source of supply. Leading from the chamber to the various pistons through the actuation of which motion is transmitted to the punch bars and other pneumatically controlled elements, are appropriate pipe connections which are timely supplied with pressure from the chamber tification keys,
through independent valve devices operated by the key-bank mechanism of the machine, as shown and described, for example, in Letters Patent of the United States N 0'. 944,405 dated December 28, 1909. According to my invention, ferred form, 19 and die cylinder by means duct comprising, in the pipe 20 provided with check mechanism which may be operated to open or close the communication between the chamber and cylinder at will, as hereinafter described. I also pierce the cylinder with a pipe 21 which leads to a suitably-located Waste receptacle 22, whereby when the air pressure is permitted to enter the cylinder, the nibs or punchings are forced into the pipe 21 and discharged .thenceinto the waste receptacle. In the present instance the pipes 20, 21, adjacent their connection with the die cylinder, pass through apertures in the inwardly extending frame flanges 23 at the respective ends of the cylinder. The pipe'20 is located exteriorly of one end of the machine frame and is provided with a piston valve 24 by vertical reciprocation of which periodical communication of the pressurechamber 19 in its preof a suitable present instance, a
with the interior of the die cylinder may-be efficiently accomplished. The piston valve 24 is fitted to a suitable casing 25 on the main frame 10 and is operatively connected to an actuating element of the machine which may be brought under the influence of the pressure in the chamber 19 by manipulation of a suitable key or keys of the keybank. In the form illustrated the valve 24 is connected'by means of a link 26 to the usual rock lever 27 of the resetting and tripping mechanisms of chine. These mechanisms include a lever actuating piston structure 28 under the control of the resetting key, or of one of the jussuch structure being connected to the chamber 19 by pipes 29 which are communicable at will with the air pressure by actuation of the proper valve connections, as shown and described in Letters Patent No. 944,405 above mentioned.
In Fig. l of the drawings I have indicated at 30 thekey-bank button for revolving the justifying scale; at 31 the lever operated thereby; at 32 the key-bar which is pushed upward by actuation of the lever; at 33 the valve bar which is pushed upward by the key-bar; at 34 the valve-actuating plunger which is shifted by the valve bar; and at 35 the valve which is pushed open by movement of the plunger in order to admit air to the proper pipe. The parts just described being of usual and well-known construction need not be herein more particularly shown or described. 7
In another aspect of my invention, the
I connectthe pressure chamber the composing ma-- valve devices,
nibs may be removed from the cylinder by suction, in which case the air pressure pipe may be omitted and the discharge pipe be connected with a suitable exhaust engine, the latter pipe having a controlling valve connected with and operated by the rock lever. Such a'modified form of my invention is illustrated in Fig. being indicated at 210 and the valve at 240. From the foregoing it will be seen that the characteristic feature of my invention consists, i'rrespective of the particular structural details which may be employed, in the provision of the nib receptacle of a monotype composing machine means under the control of a key or keys of the machine, whereby the nibs which are punched from the ribbon in the formation ofa record strip, are efliciently removed from thesaid receptacle when such key or keys are manipulated in the operation of the machine. g
