To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Mosns MosLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, and CARL BARTELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, pertaining to safe construction, relates tothe arrangement of an door carried by the main door and adapted to make a special closure with the inner compartment of the safe, the auxiliary door opening with the main door or remaining in closed condition while the main door is open, as desired.

In the drawings :-1, indicates the front of the safe: 2, the stepped door-j amb thereof: 3, the inner compartment of the safe, the same to be formed in water-tight manner, as of metal with welded or brazed seams: 4, the rear portion of the door-jamb, the same to be firmly secured to the front portion of the walls of the inner compartment 3: 5, packing, of rubber or other suitable material, extending around within the doorjamb and exterior to the front portions of the walls of the inner compartment 3, which portions extend forwardly beyond the jambportions 4 to which they are secured: 6, teeth projecting inwardly, at spaced intervals, from a rear portion of the door-jamb forward of the front edges of the walls of the inner compartment 3: 7 the main door, considered as a whole, this door fitting the steps of the jamb in the usual manner: 8, the front plate of the main door: 9, a back or inner plate of the main door, forming a rigid part thereof and designed to carry such locking mechanism as pertains to the main door: 10, the steps of the margin of the main door, fitting into the steps of the jamb, as usual: 11, the exterior handle for operating the locking bolts of the main door: 12, the combination lock, considered as a whole: 13, spaces in the door and safe walls which may be provided to receive the usual fire-proof filling: 14, the bolts of the main door: and 15, the carrying-bar for these bolts.

Proceeding with the drawings :16,indi-- cates a plate seating against the front of the inner compartment 3 and forming the auxili-' ary door: 17,bolt-bars fitted to slide on the front face of the auxiliary door, there being one of these bolt-bars at each edge of the auxiliary door: 18, teeth projecting outwardly from the edges of these bars, these teeth being adapted, while the door is being closed, to pass in between jambteeth 6 and take position to the rear of the jambteeth and then, when the bolt-bars are shifted endwise, to pass behind the jambteeth and wedge the auxiliary door tightly against the front of the inner compartment 3, the cooperating faces of teeth 18' and the jamb-teeth being beveled to produce this wedging action as the bolt-bars are moved: 19, levers pivoted upon the front face of the auxiliary door and having their outer ends in engagement with bolt-bars 17, so that the oscillation of the levers will shift the bolt-bars endwise to looking or unlocking position: 20, a pinion journaled on the front face of the auxiliary door andhaving its teeth engaging teeth on the inner ends of levers 19, so that the turning of the pinion will oscillate all of the levers simultaneously: 21, a clutch-member formed on the front face of the pinion: 22, bellcranks pivoted to the auxiliary door and connecting the contiguous ends of bolt-bars 17: 23, a rearwardly presenting hook carried by the upper inner portion of the main door: 24, a forwardly presenting hook carried by the front face of the auxiliary door and adapted, when the two doors are in association, to engage over hook 23 of the main door: 25, a spindle journaled in the main door in axial alinement with pinion 20:
26, a clutch-member carried by the rear end of spindle 25 and adapted, when the two doors are in association, to engage with clutch-member 21 carried by the auxiliary door: 27, a handle, exterior to the main door, to serve in'turning the spindle 25:

engage in notch 31 and prevent the endwise shifting of the bolt-bar provided with that notch: 33, a toe on the outer end of dog 32 and adapted to ride on one of the bevels of the stepped door-jamb and hold the dog up to inactive position when the doors are in closed position in the doorjambz' 34, a pivoted dog-lever carried by the main door and having an end adapted to engage in notch 43 ofdoor-clutch 26 when the pinion is in angular position corresponding with the locked condition of the auxiliary door: 35, a prong carried by doglever 34 and adapted to enter the releasing notches of the tumblers of the combina tion lock; 36, a tail-piece extended inwardly from the carrying-bar 15 of the bolts of the main door: 37, an incline on this tailpiece engaging an incline on that end of lever 34 which carries prong 35: 38, a peripheral notch in clutch-member 26 of the main door: 39, a second similar notch in this clutch-member: 40, a vertically sliding detent carried, by the rear portion of the main door near and radial to clutch-member 26: 41, a tooth on the end of detent 40 adapted to engage notch 39 in oneposition of the auxiliary bolt-work and to engage notch 38 in another position of the auxiliary bolt-work: 42, an incline on tail-piece 36 of the carrying-bar of the bolts of the main door, adapted to cooperate with an incline on detent 40 and move the detent toward clutch-me1nber 26 when the carrying-bar is retracted: and 43, the notch of the main door clutch which is engaged by one end of dog-lever 34.
All of the figures of the drawings with the exception of Fig. 8, assume both doors as being closed and bolted and that the combination lock has been set up so as to permit of the unbolting of the doors.
A sume, now, that it is desired to open the safe completely. Handle 27 is to be turned, with the sun, the setting up of the combination lock permitting this, and the turning of the handle causes pinion 20 to move boltbars 17 in the direction of the arrows 9 thus releasing their teeth- 18 from the teeth 6 of the jamb. The auxiliary door is now unbolted from the jamb, and it is to be observed that the bolt-bars 17 will be moved simultaneously by the four levers 19 and that they would be moved'simultaneously in the lifting detent 40 and causing detent tooth 41 to enter notch 38 in the main door clutch,
locked to the main this notch having been angularly advanced by the turning of the handle 27 which released the auxiliary door bolts. Incline 37 on the tail-piece of the carrying-bar is not essential but it serves to insure the completion of the movement of dog-lever 34 in disengagement from notch 43. This unbolting movement of bolt-bars 17 has caused hooks 30 on one of these bolt-bars to engage in front of spurs 29 carried bythe main door, the result being that the auxiliary door is door and cannot be imlocked therefrom until the bolts of the auxiliary door are again thrown. Both doors are now unbolted from the jamb and may be opened, the auxiliary door coming with and forming virtually a part of the main door. As the compound door opens, the toe of dog 32 rides off of the bevel of the jamb and permits the dog to drop into notch 31. If, now, a meddling attempt be made to operate handle 27 and throw the bolts of the auxiliary door it cannot be done on account of the detaining action of dog 32.
When the safe is pound door is pushed shut and the main door-bolts thrown by means of handle 11 and, if desired, the combination lock is thrown. This leaves the main door locked in the jamb but has no effect in moving the auxiliary door against the inner compartment, and it is desirable, for the sake of conserving the life of the packing, not to put this packing into service except when the auxiliary door is to be put into its special service. When the safe, under these closed conditions, is to be opened, it is only necessary to set up the combination lock and to draw the main door bolts.
Assume, now, that it be desired not only to close and bolt the main door but to close and bolt the auxiliary door. The compound door is to be closed,'as in the case just mentioned, and the main door bolts thrown. The closing of the compound door has released dog 32 from notch 31, freeing the bolts of the auxiliary door. If an attempt be made to throw the bolts of the auxiliary door before the main door bolts have been thrown, the attempt will be defeated by the engagement of detent tooth 41 in notch 38 of the main door clutch. But, the main door bolts having been thrown, handle 27 may then be manipulated to throw the auxiliary bolts and causethe auxiliary door to to be closed, the commove a trifle away from the main door and go into intimate water-tight contact with the inner compartment of the safe. The throwing of the combination lock will then look the compound door.
We have thus far explained the unbolting and opening of the compound door as a unit; the closing of the compound door and the bolting of the main door only; and the closing of the compound door and the bolting of both its components.
Assume, now, that it be desired to open the main door and leave the auxiliary door bolted to place. The combination lock having been set up, the main door bolts may be drawn and the main door opened, leaving the auxiliary door sealed against the front of the inner compartment of the safe and firmly bolted, clutch member 26 of the main door separating away from clutch-member 21 of the auxiliary door. The main door having thus been opened away from the auxiliary door gives access to the combination lock and to the general bolting mechanism.

We have chosen to illustrate our invention in a safe of square door fireproof type, the auxiliary door having its bolting mechanism of sliding toothed bar type, but it is to be understood that the particular construction set forth is but a single exemplification; of our invention which may be realized in numerous modifications.
We have simply sought to explain the principle of our invention and to set forth the best form in which we at present contemplate embodying that invention.

In a safe door, the combination with a main door, bolting and locking mechanism carried thereby, a water-tight inner compartment, an auxiliary door carried by the main door but entirely separable therefrom and adapted to move away from the main door and close against the front of the inner compartment, bolting mechanism carried by the auxiliary door and adapted to force the auxiliary door to closure against the front of the inner compartment, and actuating mechanism carried by the main door to serve in operating the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, of separable clutch-members carried by said actuating mechanism and the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, whereby the bolts of the auxiliary door may be thrown and drawn while the two doors are in association and whereby said actuating mechanism may move with the main door away from the auxiliary door so as to leave the auxiliary door bolted while the main door is open, substantially as set forth.
2. In a safe door, the combination with a main door, bolting and locking mechanism carried thereby, a water-tight inner compartment, an auxiliary door carried by the main door but entirely separable therefrom and adapted to move away from the main door and close against the front of the inner compartment, bolting mechanism carried by the auxiliary door and adapted to force the auxiliary door to closure against the front of the inner compartment, and actuating mechanism carried by the main door to serve in operating the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, of separable clutch-members carried by said actuating mechanism and the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, and a dog carried by the auxiliary door and actuated by contact with the surface of the door-jamb and adapted to prevent the releasing movement of the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door except when the auxiliary door is out of the door-jamb, auxiliary door may be thrown and drawn while the two doors are'in association and whereby said actuating mechanism may move with the main door away from the auxiliary door so as to leave the auxiliary door bolted while the main door is open and whereby the bolts of the auxiliary door may not be drawn while the main door is open and the auxiliary door closed, substantially as set forth.
In a safe door, the combination with a main door, bolting and locking mechanism carried thereby, a water-tight inner compartment, an auxiliary door carried by the main door but entirely separable therefrom and adapted to move away from the main door and close against the front of the inner compartment, bolting mechanism carried by the auxiliary door and adapted to force the auxiliary door to closure against the front of the inner compartment, and actuating mechanism carried by the main door to serve in operating the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, of separable clutch-members carried by said actuating mechanism and the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, and cooperating hooking members carried by the main door and auxiliary door and adapted to disengage when the doors aretaken out of association with each other, whereby the bolts of the auxiliary door may be thrown and drawn while the two doors are in association and whereby said actuat ing mechanism may move with the main door away from the auxiliary door so as to whereby the bolts of the nism, whereby the bolts leaye the auxiliary door bolted while the main door is open, and whereby the main door supports the auxiliary door when the two doors are in association, substantially as set forth.
4. In a safe door, the combination with a main door, bolting and locking mechanism carried thereby, a water-tight inner compartment, an auxiliary door carried by the mam door but entirely separable therefrom and adapted to move away from the main door and close against the front of the in-' n er compartment, bolting mechanism carried by the auxiliary door and adapted to force the auxiliary door to closure against the front of the inner compartment, operative mechanism connecting the bolting mechanism of the main door and the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary doorand servfrom each other when they are thrown,
whereby the bolts of the auxiliary door may be thrown and drawn while the two doors are in association and whereby said actuating mechanism may move with the main door away from the auxiliary door so as to leave the auxiliary door bolted while the main door is open, and whereby the auxiliary door when unbolted becomes hooked to the main door, substantially as set forth.
5. In a safe door, the combination with a main door, bolting mechanism carried thereby, a watertight inner compartment, an auxiliary door carried by the main door but entirely separable therefrom and adapted to move away from the main door and close against the front of the inner compartment, bolting mechanism carried by theauxiliary door and adapted to force the auxiliary door to closure against the front of the inner com oartment and actuatin mechanism carried by the main door to serve in operating the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, of separable clutch-members carried by said actuating mechanism and the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, and locking mechanism car 'ied by the main door and connected with the bolting mechanism thereof and said actuating, mechaof the auxiliary door may be thrown and drawn while the two doors are in association and whereby said actuating mechanism may move with the main door away from the auxiliary door so as to leave the auxiliary door bolted while the main door is open and whereby the bolts of both doors may be locked, substantially as set forth.
6. In a safe door, the combination with a main door, bolting and locking mechanism carried thereby, a water-tight inner compartment, an auxiliary door carried'by the main door but entirely separable therefrom and adapted to move away from the main door and close against the front of the inner compartment, bolting mechanism carried by the auxiliary door and adapted to force the auxiliary door to closure against the front of the inner compartment, and actuating mechanism carried by the main door to serve in operating the bolting mech anism of the auxiliary door, of separable clutchmembers carried by said actuating mechanism and the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, a detent carried by the main door and adapted to detain said actuating mechanism in the position corresponding with either the thrown or drawn condition of the bolting mechanism of the auxiliary door, and connections between the bolting mechanism of the main door and said detent to cause the drawing of the bolts of the main door to detain such actuating mechanism in either of said two positions, whereby the bolts of the auxiliary door may be thrown and drawn while the two doors are in association and whereby said actuating mechanism may move with the main door away from the auxiliary door so as to leave the auxiliary door bolted while the main door is open, and whereby the actuating mechanism may be locked in either thrown or drawn position when the main bolts are drawn, substantially as set forth.
7 A safe comprising, a doorjamb having its rear portion inwardly offset from 1ts forward portions, a watertight inner compartment having its forward portion secured to the rear portion of the jamb and projecting forwardly of the offset portion so as to form a groove extending entirely around the front portion of the compartment between it an the portion of the jamb immediately forward of said ofiset, packing disposed in the groove thus formed, and a door adapted to close against such packing, combined substantially as set forth.
S. A safe comprising, a doorjamb having its rear portion inwardly offset from its forward portions, a watertight inner compartment having its forward portion secured to the rear portion of the jamb and projecting forwardly of the offset portion so as to form a groove extending entirely around the front portion of the compartment between it and the portion of the jamb immediately forward of said offset, packing disposed in the groove thus formed, a door adapted to cooperate with the doorjamb and with the forward portion of said compartment and having its margin extending outwardly over said groove and adapted to engage said packing, the rear face of the door being provided with a continuous groove at the point of engagement of the door with the inner portion of the compartment, and packing disposed in the groove of the door and adapted to engage the front portion of the compartment and cooperate with the firstmentioned packing, combined substantially as set forth.
9. A safe door comprising, a door-jamb with tapering steps, a main door adapted to close into said jamb, a water-tight inner compartment, an inner door carried by the main door but entirely separable therefrom and adapted to move from the main door and against the front of the water-tight compartment, mechanism accessible from the exterior of the main door and adapted to force the auxiliary door against the front of the inner compartment, and a separable coupling in said mechanism to permit the operation of that mechanism while the two doors are in association and still permit the opening of the main door while the auxiliary door remains closed, combined substantially as set forth.
10. A safe door comprising, a rectangular door-j amb provided with inwardly projecting teeth spaced apart from each other, a rectangular main door, bolting and locking mechanism carried thereby, a rectangular water-tight inner compartment, a rectangular auxiliary door carried by the main door and adapted to move away from the main door and close against the front of the inner compartment, sliding bolting bars carried at the margins of the auxiliary door, outwardly projecting teeth carried by said bars and adapted to enter between and then engage behind the teeth of the j amb, means connecting said bars to cause them to slide in unison, and actuating mechanism carried by the main door and adapted to slide said bars, combined substantially as set forth.
11. In a safe door, the combination of a main door, an auxiliary door connected therewith, sliding locking bars carried by the margins of the auxiliary door, teeth projecting outwardly from the bars and adapted to pass between and engage behind appropriate teeth projecting inwardly from the jamb into which the door is to close, a pinion carried loosely at the front of the auxiliary door, levers pivoted to the auxiliary door and having their outer ends in en gagement with said bars and having their inner ends toothed and in engagement with said pinion, and mechanism connecting the contiguous ends of the bars, and mechanism axial alinement With said pinion and accessicarried by the main door for turning said ble'for rotation from the front of the main pinion, substantially as set forth. a I door, and a clutch carried by the rear end of 12.
