I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS OSKAR HGLUND, OF CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY, ASSIGNOR TO A/S. DE FORENEDE NORSKE LAASE- & BESLAGFABRIKER, 0F CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY.
LOCK MECHANISM.
Application filed October 6, 1913.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS OSKAR Hc- LUND, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Ghristiania, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
The present invention relates to a device by means of which a safety lock (Yale lock) can be used in connection with an ordinary door lock in such a manner that the door lock is opened from the outside by means of the safety lock and from the inside by an ordinary key and has for its object to provide a lock in which the outside key can be prevented from unlocking the door by the proper positioning of the ordinary key inside after the bolt has been shot.
The invention consists in the combination of an ordinary door lock with an ordinary key on the inside of the door, and a Yale or safety key on the outside of the door, the latter being arranged to engage and revolve the ordinary key to unlock the bolt but with means on the ordinary key which will prevent the safety or outside key from engaging the ordinary key and unlocking the lock when the inside key is in certain positions.
The pin to which the key-bit is secured extends transversely through the door and is on theinside provided with a knob so that the lock can be opened from that side by the ordinary or usual key.
The device may without difficulty be apl plied to any ordinary door without requiring alterations in the lock mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is l a sectional view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inside and outside keys in operative connection, and Fig. 3 the outside key prevented from taking an operative position because of the particular position of the inside key.
In the drawings 1 indicates the Yale or safety lock on the outside of the door with a key l adapted to operate therein. The inside or ordinary key consists of a pin 2 car- Speciication of Letters Patent.

rying a bit 3 and caused to rotate by a detachable handle 5. On the end of the pin 2 and beyond the bit 3 is a disk 6 fitting within the casing 7 of the safety lock. In `this casing 7 is a revolving plug 8 which carries the key 1l. The disk G of the inside key has a recess 9 which is vertical when the handle 5 is vertical. This :recess is adapted to receive the end of key 4 whereby this key, by rotating the inside key, may lock or unlock the door (Fig. 2). However, if the inside key is left so that this recess is not in a ver-` from the outside, by the key of the Yale lock. Vhen the door is locked from outside, the key ofthe safetylock cannot be pulled out, when the lock is barred the lock therefore never remaining barred after having been locked from outside.
I claim:
l. A lock operating mechanism comprisinga main lock having a bolt, a main key, a safety lock, a key therefor, and means integral with the main key for rendering the safety key operative or inoperative to revolve the main key to operate the bolt.
2. In `combination in a lock operating mechanism, `a main lock having a bolt, a Ina-in key, a safety lock comprising a casing, a tumbler barrel therein, a disk integral with the main key in said casing, a key for said safety lock, and means on said disk for rendering the safety key operative or inoperative to `revolve the main key to `operate the bolt.
In testimony that I claim'the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HANS OSKAR I-IGLUND.
