LINDSAY H. CRAWFORD, OF CHICArO, ILLINOIS.
UNDERWEAR.
To all wh om may concern Be it known that I, LINDSAY H. CRAW- r'onn, citizenl of theUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Statev of Illinois, have invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Underwear, of
which the following is a specification. l
This invention'relates to union suits of underwear for men, women and children.
The object ofthe invention is to afford increased protection to the back, chest and abdomen. This object l attain by providing the body of the garment with a lining of suitable fabric, as will appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front view of a union suit embodying the features of my invention, a part of the leg -portions of the garment being omitted. Fig.
2 is a sectional view taken in the plane of dotted line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on dotted line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
l The body 1 and leg portions 2 may be knit l in one piece as usual, or made in any other suitable way, and the arm portions 3 may be knit of the same material and sewed to the body, in the customary manner. The body is provided with a lining 4 of any suitable fabric, preferably a fabric that is softer and more agreeable to the touch than the fabric composing the body, arms, and legs. The lining 4 is coextensive with the front, back and sides and extends down- Awardly to a horizontal plane adjacent to the crotch. The body l has the usual opening down the front thereof. The lining is securedin place by the seams or lines of stitching formed at the junctionof the arms and the body, around the edges of the reinforcing piece 45 along the lines of buttons and button holes provided( at the edges of thel opening in the front .of the body, and adjacent to the Hy 6 at opposite sides of the posterior yutility opening longitudinally of said opening, which opening extends upwardly from a point adjacent the crotch region. It will thus be seen that except at its edges the inner .fabric is substantially free from the outer fabric; hence there is a certain amount of air in the intcrstices bctween the two fabrics, which improves the liest insulating qualities of the garment, and

tends to prevent vthe outer fabric from becoming wet with perspiration.
1n use, the garment affords warmth where warmth is most needed, namely, about the chest, abdomen and back.v The single thickness of fabric in the arm and leg portions not only affordssuiiicient protection, owing to the activity and movement of the limbs, but is desirable in. that excessive warmth is avoided.
In a garment made of ribbed fabric, there These spaces -in-the body fabric are substantially filled by the ribs on the lining fabric, whereby the heat retaining quality of" the garment' is materially improved. rllie use of two fabrics promotes durability. More- Ever the suit retains its original shape and l claim asmy invention:
l. A union' suit of underwear having an opening downthel front ofthe body, the arm and leg portions being of single thickness and the body being of double thickness,
the inner thickness consisting of a separate piece of fabric sewed to the outer thickness along the upper edge of the garment at thel junction of the arms and the body, and also at the edges of said opening, the lower portion of the inner thickness extending down to a point adjacent to the crotch, whereby to protect the abdomen and the lower portion of the back of the wearer.
2.1An article of underwear having a body of ribbed fabric and a lining of ribbed fabric, said lining being substantially co-extenlare spaces or grooves between the ribs.
sive with the front, back and sides of the body and terminating at its lower end adjacent to the crotch of the garment so as to protect the abdomen and the lower portion of the back of the wearer, the ribs of the two fabrics, intermeshing, vwhereby the spaces between the ribs on one fabrcwill be filled or closed by the ribs on the other fabric. I
A union garment .ofunderwear comprising, in combination, a bodyportion and leg portions connected thereto, said garment having a posterior opening extending upwardly froma point adjacent the crotch region, and a lining comprising 'portions lying on the inside of thev body portionV and secured thereto longitudinally of the garment at opposite sides of said opening.
4. A union garnient of underwear-co1n prsing, in combination, a body portion of lelastic fabric and -leg portions connected thereto, said garment having a posterior opening extending iipwardly from a point adjacent thecrotch region, and a lining of y v G'opes of this Eatent may be' obtained'for ve cents each, by addressing the' Commissioner of Patents,
