ALMOND I. WHITE AND FREDERIG A. HAWLEY, .OF CHILLIGOTHE, MISSOURI,
- 'WEAR-PLATE roa SHOE-HEELS.
v To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALMOND "J. WHrrE and FREDERIC A. HAwLEr, citizens of the a mimimum expenditureof timeand labor, 1
application.
United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Livingston and State of. Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'ear-Plates for Shoe- Heels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new'and useful,
and will,.when properly secured to the heel, be firmly held against accidental displacement.
The above and additional objects are ac-. complished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in theolaims, which are appended hereto and form a part of this With reference to the drawings, wherein there has been illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views 7 Wear plate; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of of which similar reference numeralsdesignate corresponding parts 7 Figure 1 1s a ,sideelevat onof a shoe, showlng the preferred form of wear plate applied to the shoelheel; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the preferred form of wear plate; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4is a perspective view illustratingthe lower face of thatheel tap which receives the upper portion of the the, bottom heel tap showing the grooves which are formed therein to receive the base, flange of the wear plate; Fig. 6 1s a side elevation of a shoe, showing a modified form of the device in assembled position 'on the shoe heel; Fig. 7 is a perspectiveview illustrating the modified form of wear plate in detail; Fig. 8 is' a detail perspective view of the bottom heel tap; Fig. 9 is a perspective view illustrating that heel. tap which receives the upper portion of the modified form of wear plate; and 10. is-a section Specification of Letters Patent.

taken transversely through the heel upon The wear plate of the preferred form of the invention shown in Fig. 2, includes a semi-c rcular body plate 12, which. is cutaway at its center portion, as at13, provid ing a substantially semi-circular slot or opening. This opening is formed for the purpose of reducing the weight of the heel plate, and for cheapening the cost of 111311111 facture by reducing the amount of metal secured to the heel tap, indicated at '14 in.
Figsl. "This heel tap 14, which is illustrated in detail in Fig. 4, is cut-away at its rear portion to receive the plate member 12.
()n the rearportion of the tap 14, there is left {a substantially semi-circular rib 15,
which corresponds in shape to the; opening of the slot 13, and is received therein when the plate member 12 is inserted between the heel tap 1'4 and the lower or bottom tap of the heel, indicated at 16. This lowermost or bottom heel tap 16, which is illustrated particularlyi'n Fig. 5, is provided with a recess,
which, as indicated at 17 extends around the lower face, thereof. The vertical walls/18 of this recess correspond in outline to the inner edge of a wear flange 19, which is formed on the body plate 12. flange 19 is arranged iii-parallel spaced relationto the bodyplatel2, being connected thereto by a semi-circular flange 20 which extends at right angles to the plate 12 and 1 and 5. It will now be observed by referringto Fig. 5 that the semi-circular rib or ledge 23, which is formed on. the rear ter-. minal of the heel' tap 16 bycutting the tap away toproduce the recess 17, is received within the semi-circular channel, which, as
indicated at 24, is defined by the wear flange 1.9, connecting flange 20, and outer edge of the body member 12.
This wear rear edge of the tap and is cut in from the .85
"Upon reference to Fig. it will be iioted that when the preferred form of Wear plate has been properly attachedto the heel of a c a protecting rim for the rear edge of themp a a I ,1
- In the modlfi'ed form of the invention shoe, the wear flange 19 is flush with the lower face of the lower heel tap 16; that thebody plate 12 'isipositionedbetween, the lowermost tap 16 and the next adjacent tap l4, and that the connecting flangeQOfOrms heel. In other words, the "connecting-flange 20 and wear flange 19, which latter member is adapted to engage the ground and pre- 7 ventrunning'over of the leatherheel tap,
form in reality a semi-circular casing for the rear edg Por ion of the lowerflhe el shown in detail in Fig. 7 thereisprovided,
- opening 30. In the forward edgejof the body plate are formed the wedge-shapedre taining lugs 31, which areladap'ted to be in; 1 serted intheheel tap 32, which isnext ad}v jacent the lowermost heel vtap, indicated. at
This heel tap -32is, as shown best'in 9,, cut-away-at itsrear terminal, pro duclnga semi-clrcular recess 34: anda transverse V recess 35, By. .cuttingaway: the heeltap in' this-manner, there isleft' ase'mi-ciroular porii-tion 36fwhich is received]withinthe'openn 0 W e h -body p ate he' e c' positionedbetweenthe taps 32. and 33. The
tap 'portion 36 being inserted in the opening 30,-obviously assists the retaining studs 51v in holding the body plate against with heel taps. I V v E tendinggaround the. outer edge of lthe body plate of the modified form of the indrawal from between the j two lowermost --ventionis ajwear flange 37. f This member 37, as best shown in Fig. 10, is substantially triangular in 'cross; section, its outer face,
indicated at. 38,, being arranged at right angles to vthe'body plate, and its inner face,
indicated at 39,, being arranged at a-n ap-t' proximate angle-of forty-five degreesthere to. The lower; face 40 of the wear flange 3.7:
The. heel, .when t is thirsrelatively thick. equipped with this modified form of thedeseatagainstthe beveled'face39 of the wear flange while the shoulder ii is adapted. to receive the diagonally out terminals 4:5 of
Regarding the advantages presented by the particular construction of the modified formofthe invention, it is to be notedlthat the flange 37 serves, not only tov prevent the as in the "prefeimed, embodiment of the inf t, v 5 WVlnt la in dis' plate, which is formed with a semi-circular,
heel from being run over, but also acts as p etin'g casing for the rear edge of the l ermost heel .tap 1 In reduction to practice, it been found that-the form ofthis invention illustrated in i the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of this device willnecessarily vary, it: is desirable to emphasize the factthat vari- I 'ouslminor changes in details ofconst'ruction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any ,of the advantages of this inven tionfas definedxin' the appended claims.
