WILLIAM J. BRETT. OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HAIR- WAVER.
Application filed July 19, 1913.
and useful Improvements in Hair-Navers,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair-wavers, its
object being to provide a device of simple and eilicient construction and operation whereby a variable wave effect can be readily imparted to the hair.
To 'this end the invention comprises a flexible non-elastic twisted body portion around which a dampened strand of hair may be spirally wound or rolled, and the ends of such body then be bent over to maintain the hair in position.
The invention also comprises features of construction whereby advantages are gained, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
in the drawings-Fignres l and 2 are elevations or" a hair-waver embodying my invention, showing diiierent twists or adjustments of the body. Fig. is a view, onlarged, of the free end of one of the members of the device, the same being represented partly in vertical section to show more clearly the protective pad extension of the covering for the central metal core.
My improved hair-waver, in the form herein selected for illustration, comprises a flexible nonelastic body portion composed preferably of a central metallic core, a, of soft copper wire, a covering of rubber, 7), on the core, and a. covering of braided thread, 0, on the rubber, the external covering being sullicicntly extended atthc free ends of the wire to serve as a pad or guard for the latter, a." imlirated at (Z.
The body is doubled upon itself and the two members are twisted together to produce a spiral of any desired length oi (oil or pitch extending from a loop at the end of the rlcviccsnch as illustrated in l igs. l and 2, the non-elastic clmrartcr of the pliable metal core permitting the easy twist- :zlso n'mintaining the spiral form the parts cli'cctua'lly in to assmoc.
which they may be caused.

tending ridges and valleys for the greater part of the length of the device. These ridges with the intervening valleys are the ellective feature in giving a crimp, wave or curl to the hair.
To use the device a tress or lock of hair is dampened slightly and twisted to form a slim strand. This strand tightly around the device beginning at or adjacent the scalp and following the spiral form. The ends of the device are then bent over upon the spiral body to maintain the is then rolled hair in position thereon. If desired a hair pin may be used to fasten the loose end of the hair. The device being maintained upon the head jor a suliicient period it is removed from the strand of hair, which latter when combed out presents a wave-like appearance with undulations of greater or less length as defined by the twist of the coiled body.
It is to be noted that the rubber covering not only imparts the requisite softness and bulk to the device, without impairing the flexibility of the latter, but it also protects themctal core from the action of the damp hair. The braided coiering, which may be any suitable color, conceals and protects the rubber and adds to the attractiveness of the device.
An important feature or my invention lies in the adjnstability, so to say, of the spiral form of the body, as the user, by merely twisting the two members of such body more or loss, can vary the size or length of the spiral as desired.
