SELF-ADJUSTING SPRING-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed December 9, 1909. Serial No. 532,165.
Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a and frame.
specification.
This invention relates to self-adjusting spring hinges, especially adapted to be used in connection with cold storage doors the object being to provide a hinge which is so constructed that compression will be obtained on the gasket of the door so as to form an exceedingly tight joint.
Another object of my invention is to provide a hinge which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which is very strong and durable, the parts being so mounted that the door will be supported in such a manner that all danger of the same become jammed is prevented.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hinge which is so constructed that a door carried thereby will be held within the door frame under tension at all times in such a manner that the gasket around the door will be compressed by the pressure of the spring so as to insure an air tight joint.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved self-adjusting spring hinge showing the same in position on a cold storage door Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the door and frame taken above the hinge, the cylinder of the hinge being broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing A indicates the door frame of a cold storage building or room, B the door for closing the same and C my improved hinge for supporting the door within the frame so that the same will be held therein under the tension of the spring at all times as will be hereinafter fully described. 7
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a cylindrical casing D adapted to be embedded in the wall of the building or room under the facing of the door frame in alinement with an opening formed in the door frame through which extends the collar E of a facing plate F which is secured in position on the door frame by lag bolts G so as to hold the same firmly thereon and said collar is provided with an annularly reduced portion E adapted'to fit within the open end of the cylinder D so as to form a snug joint and for securing the collar within the cylinder, I provide the cylinder D with a threaded bore D in which is mounted a set screw D adapted to engage the collar as clearly shown.
Extending through the face plate F and collar E is a stem H of a U-shaped head I, the arms of which are apertured as clearly shown through which is adapted to extend a pintle bolt J on which is pivotally mounted the eye K of a strap L which is provided with a series .of openings through which lag bolts L c re adapted to pass for securing the same to the outer face of the door and this strap be formed of any design desired. Arranged on the pintle bolt J under the eye K is a washer M forming a bearing for the eye so as to allow the eye to turn freely on the bolt in order to allow the door to swing easily.
The inner end of the stem H is provided with a threaded bore H over which is ar ranged a washer N which is secured in po sition by a set screw N and surrounding the stem H between the washer N and the end of the collar E is a coil spring 0 the tendency of which is to draw the stem inwardly so that the head will be drawn tightly against the face plate at all times and it will be seen that by this construction the gasket on the door will be compressed when the door is closed so as to form an air tight joint. 7
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a self-adjusting spring hinge which is so constructed that the same can be readily attached to a cold storage door and frame so as to hold the door tightly closed within the frame under the tension of the springs of the hinge whereby the packing material carried by the frame and door will be compressed when the door is closed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the kind described, the combination with a cylindrical casing, of a plate having a collar the inner end of which is reduced and fitted into the end of the casing,
a stem extending through the plate and colstrep adapted to be secured to a door said lar, and bifurcated at its outer end, lts instrap being pivotally connected to the bifurner end having a threaded bore, a Washer cated outer end of stem as set forth.
arranged upon the end of stem, a screw for RICHARD E. JONES. holding the same in place, a spring sur- Witnesses:
rounding said stem and bearing upon said C. L. KEEDY,
washer and reduced end of collar, and a R. M. KEEDY.
