LOCK,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application led January 27, 1914. Serial No. 814,756.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR J. OLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and the particular object of the invention is to provide a novel key hole guard arranged within the lock and controlled from the inside of the door so that after the bolt is set for the night the shield or guard may be thrown over the key hole and locked in` position so as to prevent the insertion of the key.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the lock removed from the door with the cover plate removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l and showing the lock within the door. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the escutcheon plate.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an ordinary mortise lock casing having arranged therein the usual latching and locking bolts 2 and 3 manipulated in the customary manner. The lock casing is also provided with the usual key hole 1.
Journaled in the casing is a hollow shaft 5 having a depending shield or guard member 6 formed integrally therewith. This guard member or shield yis arranged to lie adjacent the outer side wall of the casing and is held in operative and inoperative positions by a spring 7 which is provided with a V-shaped terminal 8 forming shoulders 9 and 10 which contact respectively with the cut off ends 11 and 12 of the shield,
the shield being limited in one direction by a pin or stud 13 projecting transversely from the adjoining side plate. Passing through the door 14 and through into the lock easing is a squared shaft l5 adapted to enter and fit an aperture in the shaft 5 and being provided with a knob 16 upon its outer end. This shaft is held in engagement with the shaft 'by means of an escutcheon 17 having a key hole slot 18 in its center, the edge portion of which fits an enlarged cylindrical neck 19 on the shaft 5. This neck is provided with a key 2() which enters the reduced portion of the key hole slot 18 and when turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 will prevent removal oi the shaft 15 from the escutcheon.
The escutcheon is secured to the door by screws 21 or other suitable fastening devices and the shaft 15 has a washer 22 arranged thereon to prevent wear on the door.
What is claimed is In a lock, a casing having a key hole, a shaft journaled in the casing and having a depending shield member integral therewith arranged to operate over the key hole, an escutcheon plate having a key hole slot therein, a squared shaft provided with a circular collar and a key extending radially therefrom, said key adapted to enter the key hole slot and prevent the removal of the shaft from the door, said shaft arranged to connect with the shaft having the shield thereon, a knob for operating the second shaft and a spring locking member carried by the casing and adapted to hold the shield in operative or inoperative position.
In testimony whereof I a'liX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR J. OLM.
