DISPLAY-WAGON.
Application filed September 22, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NORTH- RUP, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Oaks, in. the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-lVagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates todisplay wagons, adapted to be made of miniature size for use as toys, or of large size for display or advertising purposes.
The invention comprises a vehicle supported upon traction wheels, and carrying at each of its four corners a rotatable disk supported upon a vertical spindle or like support, and adapted to be revolved by frictional contact with the traction wheels.
The invention embodies novel means for insuring the required frictional contact between the disks and traction wheels, and also includes means for producing a waving or undulatory movement of the disks, as will be again referred to more in detail hereinafter.
The construction of the improved vehicle will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and its features of novelty will be set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a display wagon embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one corner of the vehicle. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line IVIV of Fig. 3, and, Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating a modified construction in which the cams on the under side of the disk are omitted.
The reference numeral 1 designates the frame of the vehicle supported by the usual front and rear axles 2 and 3 upon which are mounted traction wheels 4c.
At each corner of the vehicle body or frame is supported a spindle 5 provided at its lower end with a ball 6 supported in a socket 7, said socket being provided with supporting flanges 8 secured by screws 9 to the frame of the vehicle. Mounted upon each of the spindles 5 is a disk 10 formed with a central opening through which the spindle 5 extends, said disks adapted to frictionally engage traction wheels 4 as best shown in Fig. 3.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted Niay 11 1915,.
Serial No. 863,040.
As a means for insuring the required frictional engagement between the disk 10 and traction wheel 4, coil springs 11 and 11 surround the spindle 5,being supported at top and bottom by flanged washers 12 and 13.and held in place by a nut 14 secured upon the threaded upper end of the spindle5; Each of the disks 10 is provided with a series of holes or sockets 15 within which are secured the lower ends of flag stafli's 16, and as will be obvious from the illustration in Fig. 1, the rotation of the disk 10 revolves and unfurls the flags carried by the staffs 16. To impart a waving or undulatory movement to the disk, it may be provided on its under surface with a series of cams 17 adapted to successively roll over the periphery of the wheel 1, and coacting with the ball and socket supporting means of the spindle 5 to impart a lateral gaving or dipping movement to the several ags.
As shown in Fig. 5, the cams 17 may be omitted, in which event of course, the disk 10 will be rotated in a horizontal plane through its frictional engagement with the traction wheels. As shown inFig. 1, additional flag poles as 18 may be located at desired points on the bed or body of the vehicle.
The utility and operation of the invention constructed as described will be apparent, and it is obvious that the vehicle may be made of miniature size for the use of children as toys, or of large size for use in public processions or pageants. The vehicleis equipped with a suitable drivers seat as 19.
What I claim as new is 1. In a display wagon, the combination with a vehicle frame and its traction wheels, of a vertically-disposed spindle, a disk mounted thereon, spring devices for insuring the engagement of the disk with the adjacent traction wheel, and means carried by said disks for imparting an undulatory movement to said disks.
2. In a display wagon. the combination with a vehicle frame and its traction wheels, of a vertically-disposed spindle, a disk mounted thereon, spring devices for insuring the engagement of the disk with the adjacent traction wheel, and means carried by said disks for imparting an undulatory movement to said disks, comprising a plurality of cams on the under surface of said disk adapted to successively engage the peripheries of the traction wheels.
3. A display wagon comprising a vehicle body, traction wheels therefor, a plurality of vertical spindles supported upon the vehicle frame, a rotatable disk centrally mounted on each of said spindles, springs above and below said disks, flags supported on said disks, and means for imparting an undulatory movement to said disks consisting of cams on the under sides of the disks adapted to engage said traction wheels.
4. A display wagon comprising a vehicle body, traction wheels therefor, a plurality of vertical spindles supported upon the vehicle frame, a rotatable disk centrally mounted on each of said spindles, springs above and below said disks, flags supported on said disks, means for imparting an undulatory movement to said disks consisting of cams on the under sides of the disks adapted to engage said traction wheels, and universal connections between said spindles and the vehicle frame.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
