To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER RICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Readout, in the county of Harper and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to wrenches so constructed that they may be readily used upon nuts or bolts which are positioned in spaces of limited area. b
An object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the character indicated having a number of sockets of different sizes and shapes, adapted to be used upon nutsTlor 1e parts of the wrench are so arranged that considerable leverage may be exerted upon the nut or bolt which is being operated upon in order to turn the same promptly.
with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and thenparticularly pointed out in the claims and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the inproved wrench, one of the end sockets being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an end view partly in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical'section taken on the line 3, 3,.of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a sectionv taken on line 1, 41, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the locking bail. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail views of the pivoted pawls.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The head or intermediate portion of the wrench comprises a rectangular frame con sisting of the parallel held side plates 1., upper and lower blocks 2 and 2 are pivotally mounted between the end portions of the plates 1 upon studs 3 which pass transversely through the plates 1. The blocks 2, 2 are square in transverse section and each block 2, 2 is provided with a square aperture or opening. Each block 2, 2 is recessed at one side as at 5, and a spring plate 6 is located in each recess 5. The plates 6 are provided with pins 7 which eX- tend through the blocks 2, 2. The breadth of the plates 1 is approximately equal to the transverse thickness of the blocks 2. A. rectangular bail 8 is pivoted at its ends upon P. KILPAT the screws 3. The intermediate portion of the bail 8 is disposed between the inner faces of the plates 1 and the end of the intermediate portions of the said bail may lie against the side of the block 2 and hold the same against rotation between the plates 1. When the intermediate portions of the bail 8 are swung away from between the inner surfaces of the plates 1, the block 2 may be rotated freely between the said plates.
Rods 9 fit snugly in the openings 4. and are adapted to slide therein. These rods are provided with longitudinally disposed grooves 10, which have converging side walls 11. Sockets 12 are located at the ends of the rods 9. The said sockets are'arranged in sets, and the members of the sets are adapted to telescope with relation to each other. The innermost or socket member of and the other socket members are arranged to slide with relation to the bar upon which they are located. These socket members may be shaped to receive square or hexagonal nuts or bolts. The sockets may be any desired length provided they can pass be tween the side plates 1 and the blocks 2. In ine set of socket members provision may be made for securing the outermost members with relation to the bar 9 upon which they are located by means of set screws or other securing devices. Strips 13 are slidably held in the grooves 10 by the converging walls 11 thereof as shown in Fig. 2, and the said strips are provided at their ends with pivoted pawls 1 1. Adjacent the pawls 14 the strips 13 are provided with depressions 15 which may be entered by the pins whereby the strips may be fixed with relation to the blocks 2 and the bars 9 are practicaiiy held against movement longitudi nally through the openings 1 of the blocks. The strips 13 are further provided near their ends with depressions 16 which may also receive the pins 7 so that the strips and bars are fixed with relation to the blocks at points approximately midway between the ends of the said strips and bars.
The outer surfaces of the pawls 14 may lie in the same planes as the outer surfaces of the strips 13 to which the said pawls are attached. However, the pawls may be swung out and their ends propped against the inner ends of any particular socket members 12 which it is desired to hold extended to operate upon nuts or bolts. For instance, if the larger socket member should beheld extended the adjacent pawl 13 is swung out to the farthest extent and engaged with the said socket member. If, it is desired to hold the intermediate socket member out the ad jacent pawl 14 is swung just enough to en gage the edge of the said intermediate socket member. lVhen it is desired to use the innermost socket member on a nut or bolt, the adjacent pawl 14 is swung back flush with the strip 13 to which it is attached, so that the larger socket members may be moved back over the pawl and the smaller socket member applied to the nut or bolt. When one of the bars 9 is disposed at a right angle to the other bar 9, one bar Serves as the shank of the wrench while the other bar may be used as a handle. Therefore considerable force could be applied to the nut or bolt. When the bars are in the relation just above mentioned, the bail 8 may be swung inwardly to hold the blocks 2 against rotation between the plates 1 and also hold one set of socket members 12 between the side plates and the said blocks.
hen the wrench is not in use the intermediate portion of the bail 8 may be swung from between the side plates 1 and then the blocks 2 may be turned so that the bars 9 will be brought approximately parallel. After this has been done the said bars may be moved longitudinally through the openings t so that their ends are approximately flush and thus the parts will occupy but,
small space.
Having described the invention what is claimed is l. A wrench comprising a frame consisting of side plates, blocks pivoted between the plates, and bars slidably mounted in the blocks.
2. A wrench comprising a frame consisting of side plates, blocks pivoted between the end portions of the plates and being square in transverse section, and rods slidably mounted in the blocks.
3. A wrench comprising a frame consisting of side plates, blocks pivoted between the side plates, a bail pivoted to one of the side plates and engageable with the blocks to hold the same against rotation, and rods slidably mounted in the blocks.
4. A wrench comprising a frame, consisting of side plates, blocks pivoted between the side plates, rods slidably mounted in the blocks, and spring pressed pins carried by the blocks for holding the rods at adjusted positions.
5. A wrench comprising a frame consist ing of side plates, blocks pivoted between the side plates, rods slidably mounted in the blocks and having grooves, strips slidably mounted in the rods, pawls pivoted to the strips and engageable with the socket members, and spring pressed pins carried by the blocks and engageable with the strips to hold the same and the rods in adjusted po sitions.
6. A wrench having a head comprising two side plates, two apertured end blocks pivotally held between said plates, a rectangular bale pivotally held between said plates and holding one of said blocks against rotation, a rod passing through the aperture of each bar, and a spring actuated pin extending through. both blocks to engage within the openings of said rods.
