Be it known that I, ADELBERI EJOsB'OEN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaco,
in the county of McLenna-n and State of Texas,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-Trenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ratchet-wrenches wherein a handle carrying a rotating head having jaws to grasp a nut is provided with pivoted pawls, so that by oscillating the handle the pawls serve to rotate the head and screw or nnscrewthe nut, bolt, or.
other device.
The objects of my invention are to provide a rotating head of novel construction, whereby the nut-grasping jaws can be adjusted in the head for nuts or bolts of varying sizes; to provide simple and efficient means for changing the position of the nut-grasping jaws in the rotating head, and to provide simple means for confining the said jaws in position. These objects I accomplish by the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in Whic11+ Figure 1 is a plan view of a ratchet-wrench constructed in accordance with my invention Fig. 2, a plan view of the same with the detachable plate removed, which serves to confine the rotating head in position; Fig. 3, a
longitudinal sectional View of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a perspective View of the rotating plate which carries the nut-grasping jaws and their adj usting device, and 5 a perspective view of one of the jaws. Referring to the drawings, the number 1 in dicates a metallic plate rigidly secured at one end to a suitable handle, 2, and havingat its outer end a circular opening which receives onesideof the rotating head 3, said plate having two recesses, 4 and 5, the one 4 serving to .receive the actuating-pawls 6, and the one 5 serving as a bearing or seatfor one end of the detachable plate? ,which is provided at its other end with a circular opening receiving the other side of the rotating head. The periphery of the head, centrally between the opposite sides,
is provided with a notched flange forming ratchet-teeth 8, said flangeresting between the metallic plates, so that the head is securely held against displacement when the plate 7 is attached by the screws 9, while said head can, t be freely rotated in either direction by means of the pawls 6, which are pivoted at one end in the recess 4 of the plate 1, as before stated, said pawls being connected by a coiled spring,
10, which draws their free ends upon the ratchet part of the head, so that they engage therewith and rotate the head when the handle is swung or oscillated, as usual in this class of wrenches. The rotating head is provided with an elongated opening, the ends 11 of which constitute seats for the shanks 1.2 of the 6 5 nut-grasping jaws 13, while the opposite side edges of said opening are each provided with two seats or recesses, 14 15 16, also for receiving the shanks of the jaws, in such manner that the jaws can be changed, about in the elongatedopening of the headto rest in any of the seats or recesses alluded to for small or large bolts or nuts. The shanks of the jaws are provided with shouldered heads having screw-sockets 17, with which respectively en- '7 gage the right and left hand screw-threads of the jaw-adj usting rod 18, the latter being provided at each end with a finger piec-e, 19, and journaled adjacent thereto in ears 20, formed on a circular plate, 21, having a rectilinear 8o slot, 22, and loosely resting upon one side of the rotating head, said plate being of a larger diameter than the sides of the head, so as to project over upon the detachable plate 7, as in Fig. 3. The rotating eared plate is confined in place on the rotating head, and the detachable plate by means of the shouldered heads of the jaws resting over the side edges of the slot 22 in the plate, and the jaws engaging with the opposite side of the head, as will be clearly understood by Fig. 3. By turning the screw-rod 18- in the proper direction to cause the jaws to approach each other and wleave their seats in the rotating head, the plate 21 can be rotated, carrying with it the t j said plate being turned until the shanks of the jaws are opposite the desired set of seats or recesses in the head into which it is desired to adjust the jaws, after which the screw-rod is properly rotated to cause the jaws to recede Ioo from each other and enter the-seats or recesses opposite to which they have been brought by the adjustment of the rotating plate. The jaws will of course always move in a right line, owing to the rectilinear shape of the slot in the rotating plate, and by changing the jaws from one set of seats or recesses to another in the edges of the opening in the head the ca pacity of the wrench for grasping large or small objects can be quickly and conveniently changed. If the rotating plate be so adjusted as to bring the the shanks of the jaws upon the seats in the ends of the opening in the head, and the screw-rod turned to bring the I 5 shanks together until the jaws entirely leave.

As re- 0 gards the rotating head, the novelty consists in its irregular elongated opening, the edges of which are formed into a series of sets of seats or recesses, 11, 14, 15, and 16, for the shanks of the jaws, whereby the jaws can be 5 changed about in the said opening through the medium of the loose rotating plate, thereby adjusting the jaws into any set of the seats or recesses to vary the capacity of the wrench without subjecting the screw-rod to undue strain, as the walls of the seats or recesses resist all outward pressure of the jaws when screwing or unscrewing a nut or other object.
The structure, as awhole, is simple and effieient, and provides a ratchet-wrench which will be found very useful for the purpose for 5 which such wrenches are usually employed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of the "rotating head having an irregular-shaped opening, forming a series of sets of seats or recesses, with the movable jaws having shanks, and means for moving the jaws about in the said opening and adjusting them to any set of the seats or recesses, substantially as described. I 5 5 2. The combination of the rotating head having an irregular-shaped opening, forming a series of sets of seats or recesses, with the movable jaws having shanks, the rotating plate at one side of the head, provided with a slot, and an adjusting-screw carried by the plate and engaging the shank of the jaws, sub stantially as described.
3. The combination of the rotating head heldto rotate between the plates of the handle, and provided with an irregular shaped opening, forming a series of sets of seats or re cesses, with the jaws having shouldered heads, the rotating plate at one side of the head, provided with the rectilinear slot, and the screwrod carried by the rotating plate and engaging the shouldered heads of the shanks, substantially as described.
