  • My invention relates to improvements in appliances for securing ladders to perpendicular walls, and more particularly to the sides of silos and like constructions, and its objects are: First, to provide an implement with which a ladder may readily secured to, and made to suspend from a hoop on the silo. LADDER-SUPPORT.

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. TASKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in appliances for securing ladders to perpendicular walls, and more particularly to the sides of silos and like constructions, and its objects are: First, to provide an implement with which a ladder may readily secured to, and made to suspend from a hoop on the silo. Second, to provide against the danger of the latter becoming disconnected from the hoop or supporting element without raising the ladder directly upward, and, third, to provide for holding the ladder parallel with the side of the structure. I attain these objects by the mechanism and application of parts shown in the accompanying drawing, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation of the supporting element. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the same with a narrow piece of a ladder side attached. Fig. 4 shows a sectional elevation of one side of a silo and a side elevation of a ladder showing how the implement is attached to the ladder and secured to the silo hoop. Fig. 5 is a plan of the upper arm of the device. Fig. 6 is a like view of the lower arm of the same. Fig. 7 is a modified form of the same showing the lower lever in two distinct pieces.

In the accompanying drawing 1 represents a sectional elevation of a silo, 2 represents the hoops thereon, and 3 represents a ladder.
My invention is made up of a supporting bracket 4 having flanges 5 5 in position to be bolted, or otherwise securely attached to the stiles or side rails 3 of a ladder, substantially as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The body 4 is cut away to form an opening 6 between it and the ladder stile 3 for the free passage of the supporting pin (1 that passes through the lower end of thelever 7 that supports the jaw or head 10. The clamping element of this device consists of two levers, 7 and 8. The lever 7 has a head 10, and the lever 8 has a head 9 thereon so formed that the throats 9 will, when drawn together as Specification of Letters Patent.

in Fig.4, exactly correspond with the periphery of the hoop 2 on the silo, and edges 7 that are of a form to, clamp upon, and draw the hoop into the throats g. The lever 7 is bifurcated nearly its whole length thus forming'two arms or bodies 77. and z with the slot j between them, of a proper width to pass freely over thebody of the lever 8 and of the bracket 4. The lever 8 has its back end, 11, enlarged and bifurcated so it will pass over the end of the bracket 4, to which it is pivoted as at 0 so the outer end, 9, may be readily raised and lowered. The body of this lever is passed through between the arms k and 2' of the lever 7 and is pivotally secured to said lever by means of a pin 6, or other suitable pivotal connection. The back, or lower end of the lever 7 is passed over the body 4 of the bracket and has a pin cl through it which is made to slide up and down on the back surface of the body 4 when the levers 7 and 8 are being operated. When in normal position the pin d rests on the shoulder 72 of the body 4, but when the end 10 of the lever7 is placed above a hoop 2 on the silo the weight of the ladder will cause the outer ends of the levers to rise upward until the pin d is brought in contact with the shoulder a and the edges f are brought together back of the hoop 2 so the said hoop is firmly clasped by the jaws or heads 9 and 10, as indicated in Fig. 4 and the weight of the ladder and its load is supported on the lever 7, bearing at one end on the hoop 2 and at the other end uponthe shoulder a. I prefer that when the implement is supporting a ladder, the body of the lever 8 be so formed that it will bear upon the shoulder indicated by the dotted line is in Fig. 1 as by this means a considerable strain will be taken from the pin e.
12 simply represents a bracket or brace that is attached to, and projects back from the ladder stiles 3 to prevent the lower end of the ladder from swinging back toward the surface of the silo or other structure to which the ladder is to be attached.
While the illustrations shown on the drawing indicates a construction of levers for use upon round hoops, it will be readily understood that with the edges f of the heads 9, 10, of the levers projecting forward, as illustrated in Fig. 1, they may be as readily secured to other available forms of supports.
In Fig. 7 I have shown my implement made with three distinct levers. The levers 7' 7 correspond with the lever 7 the other figures, each lever 110W under discussion being separate andapart from,but identical With the other. Ihis construction is sometimes desirable as being much easier of construction and less expensive than the form shown in Figs. 2, '3 and '6, but not quite as strong and reliable Where special strain andstrength are called for. In this construction the lever B is identical with the same lever shown in Figs. and 5. The dotted lines at the lower end of Fig. '7 represents'the outline or the headl) and 1 represent the heads of the levers *7- 17 as slightly flaring for the purpose of making the edges of the heads broader the actual thickness of levers themselves;
What I claim as new, and desire "to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In combination with a structure having a supporting element, and a ladder for use on said structure, a bracket secured to the upper end oi? said ladder, a lever pivotal ly connected to said bracket at one end, a lever slidingly connected With said bracket at one end, said levers pivotally connected near the "other ends, and heads formed thereon and arranged to be made to engage the supporting element on the structure, substantially as shown and described.
'2. In combination With a silo *construc tion, and hoops vthereon, and a ladder for use therewith, a bracket secured to each stile of the ladder, levers pivotally secured to the upper end of the brackets, braces slidconnected with the body of the bracket at one end, the opposite -ends of said levers pivotal ly connected, heads formed on the levers ibeyond the pivotal connection, grips formed onsaid heads to engage the hoop on the silo to support a ladder connected therewith.
