Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24, 1917.
Application filed January 30, 1917. Serial No. 145,570.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLr GANZENMilI LER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of ldount Vernon, in the county of lVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sci'ittle-Hole Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to scuttle hole p rotectors, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 807,921, granted to me on December 19, 1905.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved scuttle hole protector having a locking device which is very simple and durable in construction and arranged to securely lock the protector in place and against opening from the outside by a burglar or other person.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a spring-pressed lever ful crumed on the under side of a plate fixed within the scuttle frame, one end of the lever being engaged by the free end of a manually controlled releasing bar, and the other end of the lever engaging the keeper depending from the protector.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the scuttle hole protector with the parts in normal locked position, the section being on the line 11 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the parts in unlocked position;
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4e is a cross section of the same on the line 4--% of Fig. 1.
Gn the scuttle frame 10 is hinged at 11 the cover or protector 12, and on the under side of this protector 12 is arranged a track 13 engaged by a roller 14 journaled on the free end of an arm 15 fulcrumed at 16 to the frame 10. The arm 15 is pivotally connected by parallel links 17 and 18 with a bar 19 provided with a reduced portion 20 engaging a guide 21 attached to the arm 15. A spring 22 is interposed between the guide 21 and the bar 19 to normally hold the latter in a forward normal position, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. On the bar 19 is secured an arm 23 extending upwardly and connected with one end of a chain 24 passing over a pulley 25 journaled in a suitable bracket 26 attached to the scuttle frame 10 at the side on which the hinge 11 is located. The chain 24. connects with a hand lever 27 fulcrumod at 28 to the building below the scuttle to be within convenient reach of a person within the building. The lever 27 is normally in uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 1, and when swung downward it exerts a pull on the chain 24 whereby an upward swinging movement is given to the arm, 15 to swing the protector 12 into open position, as inclicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When the protector is in open position it may be locked therein by engaging the lever with the rack 29. i
The forward end of the bar 19 is provided with a friction roller 30 extending under the 'horizontal member of a plate 31, preferably made of angle iron and having its vertical member fastened to the left-hand side of the frame 10. ()n the under side of the horizontal member of the plate 31 is fulcrumed at 35 a transversely extending lever 36, preferably in the form of an angle iron, and pressed on by a spring 37 at the end engaged by the friction roller 30. The rear end 38 of the lever 86 is adapted to engage a bracket or keeper a0 depending from the under side of the protector 12 to hold the latter locked when in closed position. When the several parts are in the normal position shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 4 then the friction roller 30 extends under the horizontal member of the plate 31 and consequently the bar 19 is locked against upward movement and with it the arm 15 and the protector 12 to hold the same locked in closed position and against opening by a burglar or other person on the outside of the scuttle. When it is desired to swing the protector 12 into open position by a person operating the lever 27, as previously explained, then the pull exerted by the chain 24 on the bar 19 retracts the latter against the tension of its spring 22. During this movement of the bar 19 the free end of the lever 36 follows the retracting friction roller 30 by the action of the spring 37 until the Vertical member of the lever 36 is flush with the edge of the horizontal member of the plate 31 and conse quently the friction roller 30 is completely out from under the horizontal member of the plate 31 and the rear end 38 of the lever 86 is out of locking engagement with the keeper 40, and a further pull on the chain 24 causes the protector 12 to swing into open position by the action of the arm 15. It is understood that by the arrangement described, the protector 12 is normally held locked when in closed position by the lever 36 engaging the keeper 40 and the friction roller 30 extending under the horizontal member of the plate 31, and when the bar 19 is retracted the vertical member of the lever 36 guides the friction roller 30 in its upward movement past the free edge of the horizon tal member of the plate 31. hen the protector 12 is allowed to swing downward by its own weight on releasing the lever 27 then the friction roller 30 reengages the vertical member of the lever 36 at the time the protector 12 swings into closed position. A release of the chain 24: now allows the spring 22 to move the bar 19 forward whereby the lever 36 is returned to locking position relative to the keeper 40 and against the tension of the spring 37, and which tension is somewhat less than that of the spring 22.
The locking device shown and described is very simple and composed of but few parts not liable to get easily out of order. By arranging the locking lever 36 under the plate 31 it is practically impossible to tam-' per with the locking device by a person on the roof on which the scuttle is used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a scuttle hole protector of the type described, a locking device comprising a fixed plate, a spring actuated lever fulcrumed on the under side of the said plate and adapted to engage the protector, and a locking and unlocking member having movement in the direction of its length and having its forward end abutting the said lever and extending under the said plate.
2. In a scuttle hole protector of the type described, a locking device comprising a plate of angle iron and fixed with its vertical member to the frame of the protector, a lever fulcrumed on the under side of the horizontal member of the said plate and adapted to engage the protector, a spring pressing one end of the said lever, and a manually controlled locking and unlocking member provided on its free end with a friction roller adapted to engage the springpressed end of the said lever and to extend under the horizontal member of the said fixed plate.
3. In a scuttle hole protector of the type described, a locking device comprising a plate of angle iron and fixed with its vertical member to the frame of the protector, a lever fulcrumed on the under side of the horizontal member of the said plate and adapted to engage the protector, a spring pressing one end of the said lever, a manually controlled locking and unlocking member provided on its free end with a friction roller adapted to engage the spring-pressed end of the said lever and to extend under the horizontal member of the said fixed plate, and a bracket fixed 'on the protector and engaged by the other end of the said lever.
l. The combination of a frame provided with a plate of angle iron, a spring-actuated lever fulcrumed on the under side of the said plate, a protector for closing or opening the said frame and provided on the under side with a track and with a keeper adapted to be engaged by the said lever, an arm mounted to swing on the said frame and engaging the said track to swing the protector into open or closed position, and a springpressed bar slidable on the said arm and provided with a friction roller adapted to pass under the said plate and engage the said lever.
5. The combination of a frame provided with a plate of angle iron, a spring-actuated lever fulcrumed on the under side of the said plate, a protector for closing or opening the said frame and provided on the under side with a track and with a keeper adapted to be engaged by the said lever, an arm mounted to swing on the said frame and engaging the said track to swing the protector into open or closed position, and a spring-pressed bar slidable on the said arm and provided with a friction roller adapted to pass under the said plate and engage the said lever, parallel links connecting the said bar with the arm, and manually controlled means con-. nected with the said bar to retract the latter from locking position and to subsequently cause the arm to swing upward and raise the protector.
