Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May l1, 1915.
Application ledduiie 15, 1910. ySerial No. 566,899.
T0 all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GORDON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chelsea, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, havewinvented an Improvement in Hammock-Canopies, of which the following description, in connection .with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing'repre senting like parts. f
This invention relates to a canopy for couch hammocks which have recentlycome into widespread use, and its object is to pro-` vide a canopy of netting which can ybe readily attached to and suspended over the hammock in such a manner as to protect the user from flies, mosquitoes, and other annoyances.
The invention presents adevice for this purpose and of this character which is sim-` ple and strong in' construction and which permits ready access to the hammock.
The nature of the invention will appear from the accompanying description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the claim. n y
The drawings illustrate a couch hammock of the ordinary type with a canopy ofthis invention attached thereto. y, I
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a couch hammock with the canopy of this invention in place; Fig. 2 is a detail in vertical cross section of a portion of the end of a hammock and ythe canopy; Fig. 3 is a detail showing the method of attachment of the cloth and netting portions ofthe canopy.
A. couch hammock of the ordinary type is illustrated and need not be described in detail. It comprises the usual frame l,`,maty tress 2, side strips 3, ends t, lsupporting cords 5, and suspending rings 6. 1 i
The canopy is made up of two end portions, formed preferably of closely woven cloth, and a body portion of netting or mesh goods. The end portions are shown at 7 and are preferably of the same width as the hammock and extend upwardly preferably to the supporting rings 6. As shown, these end portions slope at the top to correspond with the contour of the exterior supporting cords.
The netting 8 is united to they side edges and top of the end portions 7, as indicated in Fig. 3, the edge of the cloth end portion 7 being inturned at 9 over theedge yof the.
endv portions.
netting 8 and stitched thereto to form a welt,
thusfprotecting and strengthening the edge of the netting.
The lower side edges of the end portions 7 are not united to the netting and there are thus left flaps 10 at either side of the y which connection is made to the grommets f or suspending rings of the hammock proper.
The tapes 13 thus take all strain oif the netting and enable the body portion of the canopy to be drawn up taut and connected firmly to the ends of the hammock, thus supporting it edectively in kposition over the hammock.
The flaps 12 of the netting and 11 of the end portions enable the canopy to be fitted readily karound the bottom of the hammock.
The flaps 12 of the netting hang down outfy side where they are not liable to be injured and tornby the user of the hammock, while the'fflapszll of the end portions may lie over the mattress 2 and beneath any pillow which may be used,y or may be tucked under the mattress itself.
The canopy thus provided with this invention presents a structure of great strength, one which is readily constructed and which edeotively protects the user, and which can 4be readily attached and detached from the hammock.
Having fully ydescribed my invention what In Fig. 2 theyV are 'shown as resting on the top of the mattress.
I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture a couch hammock canopy comprising cloth end portions, a netting top and sideportions, the end portions along their top and upper part of their side edges being inturned and united to the netting top and upper part of the netting side portions respectively, and forming a welt, thelower part of the edges of the netting sideportions and the cloth end por-4 tions being free and disconnected whereby connected to the juncture of the tapes and O'opies of this patent may ybe obtained for weltsj said tapes thereby taking strain olf the netting and enabling the canopy to be drawn taut and connected firmly to the ends l5 of the hammock. Y
In testimony whereof7 I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
n CHARLES GORDON.
