To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARLEY R. IRELAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brazil, in the county of Clay and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Brickmaking- Machines, of which the following is a speci fioation.
This invention relates to brick making machinery and more particularly to a slicker head or die adapted to be placed in a brick machine, in order to give a rough texture to the surface of the brick. The primary object of this invention is to provide a' die of the character set forth which shall be effective and easy to install,
whose component parts are easily replace" able in case of wear or breakage, and which, including the clay cutting members, are relatively adjustable, so that the depth of the cut in the clay column and, if desired, in.
different portions thereof, may be regulated at the will of the operator.
With these and other objects in view as will hereafter appear, this invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of the various related parts of a brick die as hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the'ap ended claims.
Referring to the drawings orming a portion of this specification and in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts wherever used: Figure 1 is a front new of a slicker head or die embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section partly broken away showing" the mode'of installing the cutting pins; Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an isometric view of the shell; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the pin holding blocks showing the pins in separated relation thereto; and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the roughening pins.
The numeral 1 designates the mouth of any suitable brick machine such as is commonly used in brick making plants, and ro- .vided with outer flanges 22. Adapte to be secured to this mouth 1 by means of flanges 83 and bolts H is a rectangular member wardly. Adapted to fit the inner side of these tapering walls are four plates 8, 9, 10 and 11, which form the 7 shown in Fig. 4c. Each of theplates 9, 10 and 11 have cut out portions upon their 5, the walls of which taper ins,
slicker'head, best outer edges designated by the reference characters 9, 10 and .11. These cut out portions are so formed as to leave small upright members 12-1213 13 and 1414, upon the ends of the respective plates. 7 The plate 8 is rectangular and forms the bottom of said die. The cut out portions 9, 10' and 11 of the plates have their bases flush with the edge of the mouth tions 12, 12, 13, 13, and 14, 14 extend beyond said edge. Adapted to fit the cut out portions 9', 10 and 1 1' are blocks 16, 17 and 18 respectively, provided with a plurality of threaded openings 19, extending part Way through theblocks and continuing farther through the blocks as a relatively smaller non-threaded opening 20. The blocks 16, 17 and 18 are adapted to be secured in position by means of cap screws 21 which extend through holes 22 provided in the ends of the respective blocks 16, 17 and 18, and into the face of the member 5. Each of the blocks 16, 17 and 18 is provided tion 18 at each' end, this cut out portion being adapted to engage the upright members on the plates upon which the block is supported.
Each of the holes of varying diameter 19 and 20 is adapted to receive a pin 23 provided with a slotted head 24 adapted to be engaged by a screw driver or other suitable tool, and a threaded portion 25 adapted to engage the internally threaded hole 19, and a further and relatively smaller non-threaded portion 26 adapted to project through the continuation 20 of the hole 19 and into the mouth of the machine 1.
The operation of the device is as follows: As the clay column is forced through the mouth of the machine 1, it is engaged by the projecting pins 26 which tend to cut up and roughen the surface of the clay column, giving the surface of the finished brick a rough texture. The depth of the scoring of the clay column by the projecting pins 26 may be regulated "by causing the pins 26 to project a greater or smaller distance into the mouth of the machine 7, thus causing a relatively deeper or shallower out in the clay column passing therethrough. This arrangement also permits of the removal of the pins as well as adjustment for wear thereof.
In the drawings in Fig. 1, the projecting ends of several of the pins 26 have been omitted for the sake of clearness, as a show- 5, so that the projecwith a cut out porspecific details of my invention ing of them'all would tend to confuse the showing in that figure.
I realize that considerable variation of the may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof, and it is not my intention to limit myself to the specificform herein shown and described except as limited by the following claims construed as broadly as the state of the prior art will permit.

1. In adevlce of the character described,
the combination with a machine havinga' mouth through which a plastic mass is adapted to be discharged, of a supporting shell in said mouth, a plurality of members interfitting with said shell, and a plurality of pins carried by said members adapted to engage said plasticmass and roughen the surface thereof as it passes through said machine mouth.
2. in a deviceof the character described, the combination with a machine havinga mouth through which a plastic mass is adapted to be discharged, of a supporting shell in said'mouth, a plurality of members interfittin with said shell, and a plurality 7 of adjusta le pins carried by said members adapted to engage said plastic mass and roughen the surface thereof as it passes through said machine mouth.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a machine having a mouth through which a plastic mass is adapted to be discharged, of a supporting shell in said mouth, a plurality of removable members interfitting with said shell, and a plurality of pins carried by said removable members adapted to engage said plastic mass and roughen the outer surface thereof as it passes through-said ma 'hine mouth.
