MACHINE F03 FINISHING ROLLERS Specification of Letters Yatent.
rammed ma 26, 1914.
Application filed Eanuary 25, 1910. Serial No. 540,050.
To all 4071 am it m ((g concern- Be it known that I, Ronnnr SMlTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Machines for Finishing Rollers, of which the following is a speci cation.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for finishing rollers.
My improvements are particularly designed for the finishing of bearing rollers, where it is very desirable that all of the rollers shall be of the same size and that they shall be smoothly finished.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved machine for use in finishing rollers, which enables the rapid production of substantially perfect bearing rollers. Second, to provide a machine having the above advantages, which is very simple in structure and in operation.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detaileddescription to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. r
The structure described constitutes one elfective embodiment of my invention.
Other embodiments would be readily devised by those skilled in the art.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting an effective and signed to finish. Fig. 6 is a detail view, partially in vertical section, of a modified construction. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of one of the rollers which the machine shown in the modification of Fig. 6 is especially designed for producing. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail of the finishing member 30.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
. Referring to the drawing, the support or base 1 is provided with projecting ears 2,
adapted to receive the securing; bolts 3 by means of which the support is secured upon a table or other suitable bed. The support 1 is provided with an annular seat 4. 'In
this seat I arrange a finishing member 5,
preferably a ring having an annular finishing surface 6 adapted to act on one end of the rollers tobe finished, as at 8. These" rollers illustrated, and for the manufacture of which the embodiment of my invention is especially designed and adapted, are conical the same being of uniform taper from end to end, and provided with conical small ends 8 and convex large ends 9. On this member 5, I arrange the finishing member 10 which is preferably a ring hav-- ing an inclined annular finishing surface 11 thereon adapted to act on the sides of the rollers. I also provide finishing members 12 and 13 for the large ends of the rollers.
These finishingmembers are provided with annular finishing surfaces 14: and 15 re spectively, the finishing surface 1d of the member 12 being toothed, while that of the member 18 is smooth, or a olishing surface.
The finishing surfaces of the members 12 and 13 are curved in cross section to form the convex ends of the rollers. The finish- (See Fig. 5.)
ing surfaces 6 and 11 of the members 5* and 10 are smooth surfaces. These finishing members are formed of steel, preferably of tool steel. member. 16 is provided having a 'cohical finishing surface. 17, which acts on the sides of the rollers to be finished.
A feed member 18 is provided for the finishing members, the feed member being ,provided with a seat 19 adaptedto receive either of the members, or a feed member lSma y be provided for each finishing member, aswill be obvious. The member 18 is threaded into the support 1 so that it can be fed down wardly to force the rollers to the finishing members 5, 10-and 16. The member 18 is preferably adjusted by providing the Same with a lever 20 having a hole 21 therein adapted to be engaged over the pin 22 on the supportd.
A coacting rotatable finishing The rotatable member 16 is provided with a driving shaft 23, the driving means not being here illustrated. In the use of the machine, a plurality of master rollers, as 24;, are preferably provided, the master rollers being of the size of the finished rollers.
-.'Ihesc master rollers are preferably made of high speed steel, being of the exact size desired.
In use, t e device is filled with rollers which have been formed, as by a screw machine, and the cutting member 12 is inserted in the feed member 18. This is gradually fed down, and as the metal is forced up on the rollers by the finishing members acting on the sides thereof, it is cut or ground off by the cutting member, as 12. The finishing member 13 is then substituted for the cutting member, and the 'master rollers introduced and the machine operated until the rollers to be finished are smooth and of uniform size. They are then taken from the machine and case hardened. are then replaced in the machine, along with the master rollers and the polishing or finishing member 13, and the machine operated until the rollers are brought to a nice polish and finish and any irregularity or roughness produced by the case hardening operation removed.
In the modified structure shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the finishing ring or member is beveled off at 26 to accommodate the projecting pin 27 on the roller 28, the roller being slightly modified by having this pin on its small end and by having the beveled edge 29 at its large end. I
The cutting ring 30 of this device is provided with a cutting edge 31 instead of be v ing toothed, as shown at 14: in Fig. 3 (see the details of this ring 30 in Fig. 8). In this modified construction the side finishing member 10 isseated directly in the seat t instead of resting on the finishing member 5, as is the case in the structure shown. in Fig. 2, the finishing member 25 being arranged also to rest in the seat within the finishing member 10. The'me ans for feed ing the feed member 8 is not shown in this modified construction.
By the aid of this machine I am enabled to very rapidly and economically produce perfect rollers which have a very fine finish.
throughout.
The machine illustrated is adapted for the finishing pt" tapered rollers having conical small ends'and convex large ends, as shown in thedi'awing. It is obvious that the structare-is adapted to the manufacture of other forms of rollers merely by the changing of the form of the finishing surfaces.
I have illustrated and described my lin provements in detail in the form in which I have embodied the same in practice, as I have foundthis form to be very satishictory.
The rollers noeaaae I am, however, aware that my invention is capable of considerable change in structural details and embodiments, and I desire to be understood as claimin the same in detail in the form illustrated, as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a support having a seat therein, of a finishing member arranged in said seat and having finishing.

2. The combination with a support having a seat therein, of a finishing member arranged in said seat and having finishing surface adapted to act on one end of the rollers to be finished; a finishing member ar ranged in said seat and adapted to act on the sides of the rollers to be finished, said side finishing member being provided with a finishing surface of a width corresponding to the length of the bodies of the rollers to be finished; a finishing member having an annular finishing surface thereon adapted to act on the other end of the rollers to be finished; a feed member therefor threaded into said support; and a rotatable finishing member having a side finishing surface thereon.
3. The combination with a support having seat therein of a finishing member arranged in said seatand having an annular finishing surface adapted to act on the small ends of the rollers to be finished; a side finishing member arranged in said seat, said side finishing member being provided with an annular'inclined finishing surface of a width corresponding to the length of the bodies of the rollers to be finished; a finishing member having an annular finishing surface on its lower edge adapted to act on the large ends of the rollers to be finished, said, 1
finishing surface being curved in cross section; a feed member therefor threaded into finishing member;
