Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. CRANE, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Core-BoxSections, of which the following, taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for forming core-box sections, and has for its object the production of a simple and practical device which is easily operated and is durable and efficient in use; and to this end it consists, essentially, in the general construction and arrangement of the component parts of the machine, all as hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims. 2
In describingthis invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

It is Well known that the grooves of corebox sections must be formed with great accuracy and that expensive'templets and considerable hand-work is at present necessitated in their manufacture,.thus greatly adding to their expense and requiring-considerable time in their production. My invention is therefore designed to manufacture core-box sections accurately, quickly, and economically; and it consists, essentially, of a rotary shaft l3, provided with a cutter, and a table or support 1) for the core-box section, arranged normally above the shaft B and tilting toward and away from the same in a vertical plane substantially parallel with the axis of said shaft and provided with a slot alined with the shaft. g

At Fig. 4 I haveshown a core-box section formed by my machine as mounted upon the table or support D, which is shown as somewhat elevated above its position assumed when the core-box section is engaged by the cutter-knives. The table or support D is raised and. lowered and held in its adjusted position by any suitable means, and I have here shown the table or support as mounted on a pivot 0, arranged at substantially right angles with the axis of the cutter-shaft, and as connected at one side of the pivotc to a suitable adjuster. The pivot e is preferably supported by a frame or supporting piece E, connected to the frame A by a pivot 6, also arranged at subst-antiall y right angles with the axis of the cutter-shaft. The frame or supporting piece E is preferably arranged beneath one end of the table or support A, and one side thereof receives the pivot e and is interposed between arms a projecting from the adjacent upright a. The table. or support; l) is normally olevatcd, so that its upper or hearing face is arranged in substantially the same horizontal plane as the top or uppermost face of the cutter of greatest diameter, whereupon the block from which the core-box section is to be formed is placed upon the table or support against the gage thereon, presently described. The block is then reciproeated along the gage upon the bearing-face of the table or support, which may then be gradually lowcred until'its upper or bearing face is sub- .stantiall y alined with the horizontal plane of the axis of the cutter-shaft. A suitable gage ll is adjust-ably mounted upon the top-face of the table or support D and is arranged at one side of the slot-D and substantially parallel'with the cutter-shaft for engaging the adjacent side of the corebox section and guiding the same in its reciprocal movement. Said gage is provided with rearwardly-e'xtending slotted arms 7:, secured to the table by clamps 7t it, here illustrated as thumb-screws. The frame j is provided with a screw-threaded socketj? for engaging a screw-threaded portion of the shaft-division B, and is preferably formed with reidial guides j, of suitable length for receiving the .knivesj, which are adjustably held in opcratiye position by suitable clamps or sereivsj. I preferably use a series of knives, having their cutting endsj unequally separated from the axis of the cutter and arranged in planes at one side of each other, and it is evident that the guides 7' ofthe framej for receiving the shanks of the knives are similarly arranged. The cutter J is removably secured to the shaft-division 13 and may be replaced with a cutter of different construction suitable for producing a groove of different form in the core-box section.

A yoke or arm G arranged at one side of the longitudinal plane of the shaft-division l3 and provided with a socket g for an adjuster F is secured to the under side of the table or support D and is formed considerably shorter than the like part G of the previously-described, construction'of my invention. 1
I have illustrated a slightly-modified form of cutter J 20 as secured to the shaft division 13 but it is evident that any other suitable cutter may be used with this construction of my machine. The cuttorhcre illustratcdconsists of a frame j and knives j of similar construction to the knives 7' previously described, having their opposite ends secured by bolts 3' toth'e framej. When desired to use the detachable shaft division B, Fig. 7, which is of the same construction as the previously-described shaft-division B, the cutter J is removed and said" shaft-section 1-3 is secured in operative position and provided with a suitable cutter. (Not illustrated.)
At Fig. 8 I have shown modified forms of cuttingdcnives j j' y' jP as operatively engaged with a core box section J for indicating the different contour of the grooves pro duced by said knives, and it will be understood that cutters provided with any of these knives may be used with my invention.
In the operation of my invention theta/ble or support is arranged with its upper face in top or uppermostface of the cutter of greatvest diameter, and a block from which a core box section is to be-forme d is arranged upon the upper or hearing face of the table or support against thegage on said face. The block is then reciprocally moved lengthwise of said face between the shoulders on the gage and across the cutter. The table or'support is lowered gradually during themovement of the block, and the depth of the groove there in is constantly increased until the core-box section is provided with a gropve'of the. do;

On the contrary, if the groove in the core-box section is of less diameter than said box it will'be formed by the supplemental cutter and the left-hand end of the table will be lowered but slightly more than seen at Fig. 2, and if said groove is formed with closed ends it will be necessary to incline the top face of the tableor support so that the end of the core-box section nearest the pulley b will not engage and ride upon the shaft and. its box at the right-hand end of the cutter.
In the operation of my machine the cutter does not project at right angles from the top face of the table or'support when inclined, as
at Fig. 2, and consequently the groove formed thereby is not exactly semicircular; bu t, even after most careful tests, it has been demonstrated that the variation cannot be perceived by the eye of a skilled mechanic and 'can hardly be noticed evenwith the most careful manipulation of a perfectly true templet. This variation is therefore immaterial, and if the grooves are not exactly semicircular The operation of myimproved machine will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and as it is obvious that the exact detail construction and arrangement of its component parts may be considerably varied Without departing from the spirit of my invention I do not herein specificallylimit myself to such exact detail eonstruction'and arrangement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a machine for forming core-box sections, the combination of a rotary shaft provided with a cutter, a table or support for the core-box section arranged normally above the shaft and tilting toward and away from the same in a vertical plane substantially parallel with the axis ofsaid shaft, and provided with a slot arranged parallel with the shaft andv shaft and tilting toward and away from the same in avertieal plane substantially parallel with the axis of said shaft, and, provided with a slot arranged parallel with the shaft and alined therewith, a frame for supporting the; table or support mounted 'on a pivot arranged at substantially right angles with the axis of the shaft, and means for holding the table or support in its adjusted position, substantially as and for the purpose specified. v v
3. In a machine for forming core-box st ttions, the combination of a table or support having one extremity pivoted and provided with a substantially flat bearing face arranged at substantiall y right angles with the axis of said pivot for supporting a core-box section movable lengthwise thereof, said table or support being formed with a lengthwise slot in the bearing-face, a rotary shaft arranged normally beneath the table or support in alinement with said slot and provided wit a cutter projecting above said face for forming a lengthwise groove in the core-box section as it moves along the table, and an adjuster for raising and lowering the opposite extremity of the table or support, substantially as and for the purpose described.

In a machine for forming core-box eetions, the combination of a table or support having one extremity pivoted. and its opposite extremity provided with a socket in its lower face, said table or support being provided with a substantially flat'bearing-face arranged at substantially right angles with the axis of said pivot'for supporting a corebox section movable lengthwise thereof and being formed with a lengthwise .slot in the bearing-face, a rotary shaft arranged norm'ally beneath the table or support in alinement with said slot and provided with a cutter projecting above said face for forming a lengthwise groove in the core-box section as it moves along the table, and an adjuster or screw having one end provided with a ballshaped extremity arranged in said socket, substantially as and for 'the purpose described.
5. In a machine for forming core-box sec tions', the combination of a table or support having one extremity pivoted and provided with a substantially iiat bearing-face arranged at substantially right angles with the axis of said pivot for supporting a core-box section movable len gthwisc thereof, said table or support being formed with a lengthwise slot in the bearing-face, a rotary shaft arranged normally bencath the table or support in alinement with said slot and provided with a cutter projecting above said face for forming a lengthwise groove-in the corebox section as it moves along the table, an adjuster for raising and lowering the opposite extremity of the table or support, and a movable stop for limiting the downward movement of said table orsupport, subslaniially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a machine for forming core-box sections, the combination of a table or support provided with a substantially flat bearingfaee for Supporting a core-box section movable lengthwise thereof, a rotary shaft extending lengthwise of the bearing-face and provided with a cutter projecting above said face for forming a lengthwise groove in the eore-box section as it moves along the table, a bearing having one side pivoted and its opposite side pivoted to an extremity of the table or support by a pivot having its axis arranged at substantially right angles with the rotary shaft, and an adjuster for raising and lowering the opposite extremity of the table or support, substantially as described.
7. In a machine for forming corebox sections, the combination of a table or support provided with a substantially flat bearingface for supporting a core-box section movable lengthwise thereof and formed with a lengthwise slot in said face, a rotary shaft arranged normally beneath the tabie or support in alinement with said slot and provided with a eutter projecting above said face for forming a lengthwise groove inthe core-box section as it moves along the table, a bearing having one side pivoted and its opposite side pivoted to an extremity of the table or support by a pivot having its axis arranged at substantially right angles with the bearing-face and the rotary shaft, a clamp for holding the bearing in its adjusted position, and an adj uster for raising and lowering the opposite extremity of the table or support, snbstan-- tially as set forth.
