Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON W. KIRKWOOI) AND SOLOMON H. RILEY, OF IOWA CITY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 113,777, dated April 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MILTON W. KIRK- WooD and SOLOMON H. RILEY, of Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Mop; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification. y
This invention relates to improvements in scrubbing-mops; and it consists in improved arrangement of a clamp for holding the ragwiper and a mode of detachably connecting brushes to it for using either the rag-wiper or the brush; and it also consists in the application to the handle of a secondary clamp for holding rag-wipers to be used for drying the iioor after scrubbing.
Figure l is a section through the mop-heads and brush, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a grooved clamping plate or bar, which is attached to the end of the handle crosswise, and has a clamping-lever, B, pivoted at C, and provided with a screw, D, for screwing it down upon the rags or other wipers which are to be placed between the two parts of the clamp.
E is a broad plate attached to the back of A. It is wider than the said bar A, and has holes F through it vertically for the reception of the staples G, projecting from the back of the brush H, for connecting it, by running the rod I through the said staples on the upper side of the plate E.
We propose to employ another wiper-clamp A B in connect-ion with the above for holding a dry wiper for use after the floor has been suiiiciently scrubbed, and we attach it to the handle K, which is screw-threaded for the purpose, by means of a block, L, through which the handle works, for the purpose of moving this clamp away from the other and holding it while not requiring to use it. When it is to be used it is screwed down against the other.
The detachable connection of the brushes admits of readily shiftin g the brushes to apply those applicable for the work in hand-say, coarse scrubing-brushes for the iioors and iiner ones for windows and the like.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The grooved plate A, lever B, screw D, apertured plate E F, staples Gr, and rod I,
combined, as described, with the end ot' handle and back of brush, for the purpose specilied.
2. The block L, carrying a clamp, combined, as described, with the screw-threaded portion K of the handle, for the purpose of providing an adj ust-able dry-wiper.
MILTON WV. KIRKWOOD. SOLOMON H.,RILEY. Witnesses:
G. L. TAYLOR, L. O. HOFFMAN.
