PICKER-HEAD CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN ANDREW PER- KINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sanford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Picker-Head Check, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to picker head checks, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,057,977, granted to me April 1, 1918.
The object of the present invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in picker head checks of the type men tioned, whereby the varying qualities of the cam are increased and the spring for pressing the cam is concealed within the same, thus forming no undesirable projections.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a cam adapted to engage the picker head, a fixed pin, a collar secured to the said pin and on which the said cam is mounted to turn, and a spring interposed between the said cam and the said collar and concealed within the cam.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a plan view of the shuttle box on the right-hand side of a loom and provided with a picker head check; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 8 is an enlarged side elevation of the same; Fig. 4: is a sectional plan view of the same; Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the collar on which the cam is mounted to turn; and Fig. 7 is a sectional side elevation of a modified form of the pin carrying the cam collar.
The shuttle box for the reception of the shuttle B is provided with the picker head C mounted to slide on a suitable guide rodD and in a groove (not shown) formed in the bottom of the shuttle box A, the same as shown and described in the patent above referred to. The picker head 0 is connected by the usual picker strap with the outer end of the picker stick employed for moving the picker head C with a view to throw the shuttle from one side to the other and for returning the picker head 0 to the position of rest indicated in Fig. 1, it being understood that the picker stick is, in practical operation, mounted to swing in a horizontal plane above that of the shuttle box. A cam H is arranged on top of the box A and is provided with a hub H mounted to turn loosely on a collar I secured to a pin J by the use of a set screw K passing through an elongated slot H formed in the hub H, the screw K screwing the collar I against the pin J, as plainly indicated in Fig. 4. The pin J is secured in a bearing L by the use of a set screw L, as shown in Fig. 2, the bearing L being attached to the shuttle box A or to another part of the loom, and the pin J also forms the fulcrum for the shuttle box binder or swell N employed for checking the shuttle B in the usual manner. The collar I is provided with a flange I adjacent one side of the hub H, and the collar I is provided with a sidewise-extending arm or lug I projecting into a recess I-I formed in the cam H. In the recess H is seated a spring 0 pressing against the arm I so as to hold the cam H normally in an innermost position with the curved edge ITI thereof in the path of the picker head C for engagement by the two upright arms C of the picker head 0 on the return movement thereof to hold the picker head C against accidental inward movement either from rebounding or from vibrations of the loom.
It is understood that the cam H is so located relatively to the shuttle box A as to hold the picker head C in the proper receiving position for the shuttle B, to allow the shuttle to fully enter the shuttle box and to engage the picker head C so that on the next action of the picker stick the shuttle B is properly propelled by the action of the said picker stick, its strap and the picker head C. The inward movement of the picker head C is limited by the usual buffer P held on the inner end of the guide rod D and connected with a bufier strap P attached to the shuttle box A at the outer end thereof, as plainly indicated in the drawings. A fence strap Q engages the outer end of the guide rod D and a strap R also engages the said guide rod on one side of the strap Q, and this strap R extends to the left-hand end of the lay and connects with the guide rod D on the other side of the loom. The bufier P and the straps Q and R form no part of my invention, which consists essentially in the cam H yieldingly mounted and arranged as above described.
It is understood that the cam H is sufficiently spring pressed to retain the' picker stick C in receiving position for the shuttle but readily allows the picker head C to be moved inward out of engagement with the cam H when acted on by the picker stick and its strap, and also allows an outward movement sufiicient to check the shock of impact of the shuttle when the latter enters the shuttle box.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the spring 0 is completely concealed within the cam H and thus forms no undesirable exterior projection.
By adjusting the collar I on the rod J the tension of the spring 0 can be regulated to suit existing conditions. If desired, the collar I may be secured on an oflset terminal J 2 of a pin 'J adjustably secured in the bearing L by the set screw L (see Fig. 7). On turning the pin J in its bearing L the position of the cam H can be changed relatively to the-upright arms G of the picker head C. Y
Although the device has been shown applied to one form of loom, it is evident that I do not limit myself tosuch use of my device as the latter can readily be applied to other forms of looms. r
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and'desireto secure by Letters Patent:
1. A picker headcheck, comprising a cam adapted to engage the picker head, a fixed pin, [a collar secured to the said pin and on which the said cam is mounted to turn, the said collar having a sidewise extending arm and the said cam having a recess into-which projects the said arm, and a spring held and concealed in the said recess and pressing the said arm.
2. A picker head check, comprising a cam adapted to engage the picker head, a fixed pin, a collar secured to the said pin and'on which thesaid cam is mounted to turn, one
end of the said collar having a flange engaging the corresponding face of the hub of the cam, the said collar having a sidewise extending arm and the saidcam having a recess into which projects the said arm, and
a spring seated in the said recess and press ing the said arm.
.3. A picker head check, comprising a cam adapted to engage the picker head, a fixed pin having .an ofiset terminal, a bearing in Which the pin is adjustably secured, a collar secured'on the said pin terminal, and having a sidewise extending arm, and a spring pressing the said arm, the said cam being ing,.a collarsecured'to" the said pin and on 1? which the hub of said cam :is 'mounted to turn loosely, the said collar having a sidewiseextending arm, the cam havinga recess into which projects the said arm, and a spring seated in'the said recess and pressing 7 against said armto hold the cam normally in the pathofthe 'pickerhead.
5. A pickerhead check, comprisinga cam adapted to-engage the picker head and providedwith a hub, a chum on which the hub of the cam-is mounted to turn loosely, a spring interposed between the saidcam and the 'said collar,'.a "fixed pin on which the collar is mounted, the collar being adjustable on said pin to regulate the tension'of said spring, and 'means for securing the collar in-position on the pin.
6. A picker head check, comprising-a cam adapted to engage the picker head and 'provided with 'ahub having an elongated slot therein, a collar on which the hub of said cam-is mounted to turn, the collar having an arm and the said cam having a recess into which projects thesaid arm, a spring held in the said recess and pressing the said arm,
a fixed pin on which the said collar 'is mounted, and 'a set screw for securing the collar "to the said pin, the said screwpa'ssing through the slot in the hub of the cam.
