To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KARL Boone, a subj ect of the German Emperor, residing at 33 Teltowerstrasse, Berlin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Typographical Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improved means for quick changing a magazine in a multiple magazine composing and distributing machine and is advantageously applicable to multiple magazine typographical composing, line-casting, and distributing machines of the Mergenthaler type commercially known under the trade mark Linotype.
There are known at the present time, quick changing means for machines of the type just defined, in which the plurality of magazines is carried upon a series of vertical cams symmetrically arranged and having their axes in a plane parallel with that of the plurality, the so-called magazine frame upon which the plurality is supported, being provided with antifriction rollers engaging with the cams.
The present invention consists in the combination with such a magazine frame as the one described, of a cam system comprising one or more cams arranged on a transverse shaft journaled in the machine frame practically midway of the frontand rear of the plurality of magazines, a hand lever by which the cam system can be operated by the machine operator, and guides for the reciprocating movement of the plurality necessitated by a quick change symmetrically arranged in front of and to the rear of the said shaft.
The invention comprises, in the event of the machine having a single assembler guide in front of and a single fixed distributer behind the plurality of magazines, means controlled by the said lever by which the initial portion of the movement of the cam system, shall disengage the matrix escapement rods from the magazine to be quick changed and the magazine entrance common to all the magazines of the plurality, from the distributer and the entrance mouth of that magazine.
The accompanying figure is a side elevation of a preferred constructional form of the application of the invention to a ma chine of the type above described.
The plurality of magazines is represented by two 1, 2, supported on the usual magazine frame 3.
4 is the cam, or one of the cams of the cam system and 5 is the transverse shaft and to which it or they are fast. If there is only one cam it is under the central portion of the frame 3. If there are more cams than one, they are arranged on the shaft symmetrically with reference to that portion.
6 is the respective antifriction roller. The machine frame in which the shaft 5 is journaled is not included in the figure. As to the guides for the reciprocating movement of the plurality, two appear in the figure. These two may be taken as centrally front and aft of a single central cam 4, or as representing four guides arranged symmetrically with reference to the central portion above mentioned, say one at each corner of the frame 3, and this latter arrangement is the preferred one. The type of guide is immaterial provided that it is efficient as a guide for the purpose stated. Two types are shown. One of these consists of a fork 7 fast to and depending from the frame 3 at right angles therewith and embracing a transverse shaft 8 fast to the machine frame; the other, of a long stud 9 fast to and depending from the frame 3 and engaging in a strong socket 10 fast to the machine frame, both stud and socket being at right angles with the frame 3.

As there are only two, the composing position of the one tallies with the out-of-composing position plurality, each radius must be multiplied accordingly 'in the'well known way.
14, 14 are the usual escapements and 15 one of the row of escapement rods embraced by a yoke 16 movable horizontally to and fro to put the noses of the said rods out of working connection with the escapements of the magazine to be changed and into working I connection with those of the substitute mag- ,azine.
17 is a rearwardly extended frame carryingthe yoke 16 and adapted to move it as stated, by the engagement of an eye 18 at each end'on a'suitably supported horizontal rod 19. The frame 17 is moved by the above-described cam-system which is duplex inasmuch as it has a special rise or rises 20 for this purpose. As soon as the lever 11 is started, a rise 20 rocks the top end of a lever 21 fulcrumed on a stationary fulcrum 22 and in constant engagement with that rise, to the rear, thereby making'the bottom armof' the. lever '21 push the frame 17 to the front, thereby disengaging the rods 15 fromthe escapement of the magazine to be changed. This disengagement is accompanied by the rocking back of the magazine entrance 23 on its pivot 24, which rocking back is effected by an arm 25 fast on the fulcrum 22, a second arm 26 fast on the pivot 24: and a link 27 connecting their outer ends. 28 is 'an adjustable connection between the frame 17 andthe bottomend of the lever 21.
29' is one of a plurality of notches each properly located in the rise20 to engage the top endof the lever 21 whenever the escapement rods 15 are in working connection with arow of escapements 14, and to lock them there: I
.The reversal of the lever starts the magazine frame 3 and as soon as the substitute magazine is in composing position,themagazine entrance 2 and the escapement rods are returned to their working positions and the former locked there.
Having described my invention I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent is:
1. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality of magazines, anda rotary cam system for shifting the magazines bodily to bring one or another into operative position,the said cam system having a common axis located centrally, or substantially so, of the magazines and extending parallel therewith.
2. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality of magazines, a rotary cam system for shifting the magazines bodily to bring one or another into operative position, the said cam system having a common axis of rotation, and means for guiding and confining the magazines in a straight path during their movement.
3. In a typographical machine, the combination of a plurality of magazines, and a rotary cam'system for shifting the magazines bodily to bring one or another into operative position, the said cam system having a common axis of rotation extending transversely of the magazine and located midway, or substantially so, between the opposite ends of the magazines.
4. In a typographical machine, the combi nation of a plurality of magazines, a rotary cam system for shifting the magazines bodily to bring one or another into operative position, the said cam system having a common axis of rotation extending transversely of the magazine and located midway, or
substantially so, between the opposite ends of the magazine, and means for guiding the magazines in their movements, the said means including guides arranged at the opposite ends of the magazines.
5. The combination in means for quickchanging a plurality of magazines in a typographical composing and distributing machine of a magazine supporting frame adjustable for the purpose of quick-change, a cam-system all the parts of which have a common axis transverse of the said frame and in operative contact with its bottom face, a hand lever operatively fast to the said camsystem, a rise positioned on each cam of the cam-system to anticipate the magazineframe adjusting movements of the latter, a series of magazine-escapement actuating rods, a yoke embracing the said rods, a movableframe carrying that yoke, and means actuated by the said rise to make the said movable frame put the escapelnent rods out of working connection with the escapement of, and to also rock the magazine entrance out of working connection with, the magazine to be changed.
6. The combination in means for quickchanging a plurality of magazines in a typographical composing and distributing machine, of a magazine supporting frame adjustable for the purpose of quick change, a cam-system all the parts of which have a common axis transverse of the said frame and in operative contact with its bottom face, a hand lever operatively fast to the said cam-system, a rise positioned on each cam of the cam-system to anticipate the magazine-frame adjusting movements of the latter, a series of magazine-escapement actuating rods, a yoke embracing the said ing connection with any cooperating set of 10 rods, a movable frame carrying that yoke, escapements.
