To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILBERT H. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana-polis, county of Marion, and State of indiana, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Type-Filing Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
lThis invention relates to type filing instruments.
ln operating multigraph machines, or other machines of a similar nature used in printing small pamphlets and more particularly form letters, the type, used in these machines are usually provided with a substantially narrow base or body portion, and provided adjacent the upper edge or face of the type, and also adjacent the lower or bottom end of the type with laterally extending shoulder members, in order that the type may be slid within the usual type retaining grooves upon the face of the'form cylinder. Oftentimes the type adapted for use upon the machines of this character are, to a certain extent, defective, in that, the shoulders of some of the type are a trifle thicker than the shoulders of others, which obviously causes a heavier impression of these particular types upon the pamphlet or letter in the printing operation. It has also been found v that where all type adapted for use in these machines are of the same thickness, that is, which extend radially from the type cylinder the same distance, certain of shorter lines of a. paragraph to be printed will be given heavier impression upon the printed matter than other full lines; this owing to the less type surface of the particular line with the same amount of pressure from the cylinder and base as is imparted to the full lines.
It is the primary object of my invention to overcome these objections.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and eihcient means whereby type may be evened and relieved of any rough or uneven shoulders or projections preparatory to being set in form upon the surface of the cylinder, in order that an even and uniform impression upon the article to be printed may be had.
A still further object of my invention is to provide in a device of this character, means whereby the device may be regulated or adjusted to remove the desired amount of metal from the type. p l
A still further object of my invention is to provide improved means for feeding the type to be treated to the type treating device.
With these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists generally in a substantially thin rectangular plate, the said plate being provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from its opposite end, a member mounted for reciprocation upon said plate and provided with a slot similar in width to the slot upon the plate and adapted to register therewith, the said plate being provided adjacent the said slot with abrading surfaces, the said registering slots being of sufcient width to accommodate the substantially narrow shank of the type with the upper shoulders of the same in engagement with the abrading surfaces, means upon the reciprocating member for holding the type to travel therewith, and means whereby the said plate and the said reciprocating member may be adjusted to or from each other.
My invention further consists in a device as above briefly described, further characterized by improved means for properly alining the type to be treated with the slot, comprising a holder of sufficient size to accommodate a type stick, the said holder adjacent its forward end being provided with spaced spring jaws adapted to engage over the outer end of the said plate and so arranged as to properly aline the type slot of a type stick contained within the holder with the slot provided in the plate, when in proper position. My invention still further consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood with reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a type filing or abrading device constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating the back of the device, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on an enlarged scale taken substantially upon the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view illustrating my improved means for alining the type to be operated upon by the abrading device, Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail plan view of the end the aforementioned slot.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings l represents generally the body portion of my invention, which preferably comprisesV a substantially thin rectangular plate, provided at one end with a hand grip 2, and is provided at its opposite end with an inwardly extending slot 3, the said slot terminating at a point substantially midway between the opposite ends of the plate. The said slot is spaced inwardly substantially equidistant from the longitudinal edges of the plate and extends parallel therewith throughout its entire length; one face of the plate adjacent the opposite edges of the slot 3, being provided with abrading, or file surfaces 4.
.The material used in the construction of a device of this character may be wood or metal, the latter, for all purposes, being considered preferable, and it is to be understood that the abrading faces 4 adjacentthe slot may be formed upon the plate itself in any preferred way. For thepurpose of holding type within the slot thus formed with their upper shoulders in engagement with the abrading oriile faces 4, I provide a reciprocatory member in the form of a Y i sleeve 5 of suilicientwidth to permit of its inclosing the plate l with its longitudinal edges` 6 bentV over to engage the opposite faces of the said plate l. Extending inwardly from one end 0f the plate, and in register with the slot 3 of the said plate, is v a slot 7 of substantially the same width as When the sleeve, thus formed, has been positioned upon the plate as shown in the several gures, the end of the said plate is turned angularly as at 8 to form stops to prevent the reciprocatory member or sleeve from becoming disengaged from the plate. It will be obvious from this construction that when the handle 2 of the device is grasped by one hand the sleeve or reciprocato'ry member 5 may be easily worked backward and forward, longitudinally of the said plate without danger of the same slipping off at the end. in constructing a device or this character, it is essential that the combined thicknesses of the metal of the sleeve 5 and the plate l adjacent the edges of the registering slots thereof, be substantially' equal to the distance between the under Afaces of the upper shoulders of the tvne, and the upper faces ofthe lower shoulders in order that, when properly positioned within the slot,
the said under faces of the upper shoulders will be inengagement 'with the abrading surfaces 4 lupon the plate l.
Arranged upon the rear face of the reciprocating member or sleeve 5, preferably adjacent the slot 7 thereof, and in pairs, one upon .each side of the slot, at regular. intervals throughout the length thereof, are adjusting members 9 in the form of set screws, which extend through the thickness ofthe body portion of the sleeve and impinge against the adjacent face of the plate l. By this arrangement it is obvious that the sleeve and plate may be adjusted Vtoward and away vfrom each other, to the end that the friction of the abrading surfaces against the under faces of the upper shoulders of the type may be increased or diminished at the will of the operator;v the advantages of which are obvious.
The clips or bands 10 and 11 respectively are adapted to be Vpositioned upon the sleeve 5, adjacent the outer ends of the line of type, in order that upon reciprocation of the parts, the type will be held securely to travel with the said sleeve 5.v The operation of the device is obvious; the line of particular type which will constitute the short line of a paragraph or of a sentence, will be inserted within the slot as shown'in Fig. l, with the clips 10 and lll-engaging the opposite ends of the line to hold the same securely with relation to the sleeve 5, the clips themselves being held in place by engagement of their ends over the Vlongitudinal edges of the member 5,and upon reciprocation of the sleeve 5, or plate 1, the abrading surfaces will wear away the under faces of the upper shoulders-of the type, to such *Y degree, governed by the will of the operator, as to permit of the said line, when positioned upon the cylinder of the press, eX- tending outwardly therefrom to assume a position slightly below the type faces of the type constituting the-rest of the form. It is obvious that upon operation of the printing machine, a more uniformly printed sheet will result, as the upper shoulders ofthe type have been reduced in thickness to such Y extent as to be relieved of the pressure eX- isting between the cylinder' and bed of the press.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 I have illustrated an improved means forassisting in theV alining of type to slide within the slot of the filing instrument, and consists of a holder or barrel 1 2, of suflicient diameter in cross to the body of the holder 12 that when the -outer longitudinally extending edgesthe'reof are in alinement with the longitudinally extending edges of the plate l, the barrel, containing the slotted type stick 13 will be properly positioned with the slots thereof in alinement with the slots 3 and 7 of the said plate, to facilitate feeding the type from the stick to the slide. Y
I claim:
l. In a device of the class described, a bifurcated plate, said plate adjacent said bifurcated portions being provided with abrading surfaces, a member mounted for reciprocation upon said plate, and means for securing type to said member to reciprocate with the same in contact with said abrading surfaces, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate being slotted inwardly from one end, the said plate upon its upper face adjacent said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a member mounted for reciprocation upon said plate, and means for securing type to said member within said slots, and in engagement with said abrading surfaces, subtantially as described.
3. In a. device of the class described, a plate having a slot extending inwardly from one end, the upper face of said plate adjacent said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a sleeve mounted for reciprocation upon said plateand provided with a slot adapted to register with and corre sponding in width with the slot in said plate, and means for holding type securely to said sleeve within said slots, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, a plate provided at one end with a hand grip and with a slot extending inwardly from the opposite end, the upper face of said plate adjacent said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a sleeve mounted for re! ciprocation upon said plate and provided with a slot adapted to register with and corresponding in width with the slot in said plate, and means for holding type securely to said sleeve within said slots, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from the opposite end, the said plate upon its upper face adjacent said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a member mounted for reciprocation upon said plate, and means for securing type to said member Within said slots and in engagement with said abrading surfaces, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from the opposite end, the said plate upon its upper face and on cach side of said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a member mounted for reciprocation upon said plate, and means for securing type to said member within 'said slots and in engagement with said abrading surfaces, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from the opposite end, the said plate upon its upper face adjacent said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a member mounted for reciprocation upon said plate, and means for adjustably securing type to said member within said slot and in engagement with said abrading surfaces, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from the opposite end for the major portion of its length, the upper face of said plate adjacent each side of said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a reciprocatory member mounted upon said plate, said member being provided with a slot extending inwardly from one end of substantially the same width as and adapted to register with the slot in said plate, the combined thicknesses of said plate and said reciprocatory member being such as to permit of the insertion of shouldered type within` the slots, and means for securing said type to be carried by said reciprocatory member, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from the opposite end for themajor portion of its length, the upper face of said plate adjacent each side of said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a reciprocatory member mounted upon said plate, said member being provided with a slot extending inwardly from one end of substantially the same width as and adapted to register with the slot in said plate, the combined thicknesses of said plate and said reciprocatory member being such as to permit of the insertion of shouldered type within the slots, and clips adapted to adjustably engage over said reciprocatory member to retain the type therewith during the reciprocation, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from its opposite end for the major portion of its length, the upper face of said plate adjacent each side of said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a reciprocatory member mounted upon said and said reciprocatory member being such' as to permit of the insertion of shouldered type within the slots, means for securingsaid type to be carried by said reciprocatory member, and means for adjusting the plate and the reciprocatory member toward or from each other, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the class described, a substantially thin rectangular plate provided at one end with a hand grip and being slotted inwardly from the opposite end, the Vfaces of said plate adjacent said slot being provided with abrading surfaces, a sleeve mounted for reciprocation upon said plates, and having a slot extending inwardly from one end thereof of the same width as and adapted to register with the slot in said plate, the thicknesses of said plate and said sleeve adjacent said slot being such as to permit'of the insertion of shouldered type therein, clips for `retaining said type with said sleeve, and set screws extending through said sleeve from the rear side and adapted to engage the inner face of said plate, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the class described, a plate and a sleeve mounted in reciprocating relation to each other and provided with registering slots for the reception of shouldered type, portions of the plate adjacent said slot being provided with abrading surfaces; in combination with a grooved holder adapted to receive a slotted type stick, jaws on said holder for engaging the end of said plate to hold the said type stick in engagement with the said end of the plate with the slot of said stick in alinement with the slots of said plate and sleeve, substantially as de- P ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
