To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMEON C. LAWLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sieves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sieves, and particularly to the type in which both the container and shaker handles are adapted to be grasped in the same hand of the operator.
Among the objects in view are the effective, relative vibration of the container and shaker, the maintenance of the shaker in proper position, and the simple, cheap and efiicient construction of the shaker handle with its operating means.
With these and further objects in view as will hereinafter in part be stated and in part become apparent, the invention comprises certain novel construction, combina tions and arrangements of parts as herein set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sieve embodying the features of the present invention, a wall of the container being broken away for disclosing interior structure. Fig. 2 is a horizontal, transverse section taken on the plane indicated by line 22 of Fig. 1, and looking downwardly. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 of a modified embodiment. Fig. 1 is a vertical section therethrough taken on the plane indicated by line li of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a container which may be of the usual type and provided at its lower end with a screen 2. Arranged within the container immediately above the screen is a shaker 3. The shaker 3 preferably consists of a single Wire bent into convolutions forming a body ter minating with the end portions of the wire juxtapositioned and constituting an operating arm 4, which is extended through an aperture 5 in the wall of the container 1 for enabling reciprocation of the shaker within the container. It is to be noted that the wire forming the shaker 3 is bent to extend in the general direction of reciprocation a distance greater than the distance of re- Specification of Letters Patent.

ciprocal movement of the shaker, and a cross rod 6 is fixed to the walls of the container 1 and extends above and across the shaker 3 in position for preventing upward displacement of the shaker.
lhe container 1 is provided with a handle 7 which is slotted at its lower portion, as at 8, and is preferably formed intermediate its length with transverse slots 9, 9. A shaker operating handle 10 is arranged within the handle 7 and consists preferably of a transversely concavo-convex strip of spring material, a portion of the material extending beyond the handle portion and forming a spring 10 which is bent to extend clownwardly through the slots 9 for sustaining the handle 10 in place. The lower portion of the handle 10 is folded or bent together to form an extension 10 which projects downwardly through the slot 8 and is pivotally connected to the operating arm 4:, as by extending through an eye at the outer end of the arm.
It will be noted that in operation the handle 7 is engaged'by the palm of the hand of the operator while his fingers are passed back of the handle 10, whereby both handles are grasped in the one hand of the operator. A contracting movement of the fingers will serve to draw the handle 10 towad the handle? and thus draw the arm 4: outwardly,
imparting movement to shaker 3 in one direction. When the limit of outward movement is reached by handle 10, the operator merely releases his grasp sufliciently to allow the handle to move inwardly or toward the container 1, such movement being effected by the expanding pressure of the curved upper portion of spring 10. This inward movement thus effects a return reciprocation of the arm 1 and shaker 3. When the sieve is filled with flour or other substance to be sifted, the operator can easily reciprocate shaker 3 by repeating the operation stated, either rapidly or slowly, according to the quantity of sifted material to be discharged from the screen.
In Figs. 3 and 4, I have illustrated a further embodiment of the present invention which is particularly well adapted for enabling effective relative movement of the shaker with respect to the container and of the container with respect to the shaker, each moving at the same time as the other in an opposite direction during operation.
In this structure the container 1 is provided with the screen 2, and shaker 3, which latter is formed with the outstanding endportions 4 which are bent together at their outer extreme and thus form an operating arm, which is pivotally engaged by an actuating handle 11, which handle extends upwar'dly from the armand at its upper end is pivotally connected to the container 1. By preference, each end portion of the wire constituting the operating arm is surrounded by a coiledspring 12, which has its inner end pressing against the container 1 and its outer end engaging or fixed to the bent outer portion 01? the respective rod, the springs 12 exerting an expanding pressure tending to hold thelower portion of handle 11 in its outermost position. A supporting handle 7 is fi-Xed to the container 1 Within the handle 11, so that the said supporting handle may be grasped, during operation, by the fingers of the operator while the palm of the hand engages the handle 11, and a contraction of the hand effects movement of the two handles toward each other, whereby the container 1 is drawn in one direction and the shaker 3 is reciproeated in the opposite direction, a reverse movement ofthe respective parts being eiiected by loosening of the grasp of the hand, allowing the handle 11. to swing outwardly under the pressure of spring 12. The confining rod 6 is employed in thisyconstruction to prevent the shakers, from being displaced, and the wire of whichthe shaker is formed is extended inthe direction of reciprocation suffieiently to insure against the shaker escaping from beneath the confining rod.
What I claim is 1. In a sieve, the combination with a container, and a screen, of a shaker disposed within the container, above the screen, and comprising bent wire, parallel portions 01 the wire being extended from the shaker through the wall of the container, and forming an operating arm for the shaker, and being disposed in spaced relation to prevent rocking of the arm, an operating handle for said arm outside of the container, and a handle for the container contiguous the first- J mentioned handle and disposed for enabling the hand of the operator to grasp both handles.
2. In a sieve, the combination, with a container and a screen therein, of a shaker slidingly disposed above the screen, and a handle outstanding from the container, arms extending from the shaker through the walls of the container at opposite sides of the handle, a second handle pivotally conneeted to the container at its upper portion and engaging said arms, and a spring pressing the last mentioned handle outwardly, the two handles being disposed for being grasped by one hand of the operator.
