WIRE-PLACER.
instales.
Application filed June 16, 1913.
To all who/m, it may concern:
Be it known that ll, WAL'roN E. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Placers; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. f
My invention relates to a wire placer, and more particularly to a device for use -in placing a fence wire against a post, and holding saine in position while the wire is being stapled or otherwise fastened to the post; the principal object of the invention being to provide a device of this character for facilitating the application of fence wires, and particularly the lower wires of a series, which it is usually necessary to push downwardly to the proper position on the post. In accomplishing this object, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forni of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein :w
Figure l is a perspective view of a wire placer, constructed according to my invention. Fig. Il is an enlarged view of the jaw end of the device. Fig. Hl is a sectional view on the line lll-JH, Fig. Il. Fig. IV is a view illustrating the use of the placer. Fig. V is a similar view illustrating the use of the staple puller, with which th device is equipped.
Referring more in detail to the parts The device is preferably constructed of suitable rnetal, and comprises a body 1 having a slightly enlarged end-2, slit longitudinally to provide the teeth 3, which are preferably beveled or pointed asillustrated, in order to provide the beveled inner edges 4. Each of the teeth 3 is provided near its base with an ear 5, which is undercut to provide the sockets 6 between the projecting ends of the ears and the faces of the teeth for vref ceiving the fence wire, which is to be placed against a post. l also prefer to recess the head slightly at its base as at 7, and to cut Specification of Letters Patent.

away a part of each of the ears 5 at its inner edge, in order to afford space at each side of the staple slot thus forming a pocket at the base of the slot, so thatany slight projection on the post niay be received between the ears, and thereby enable the head of the tool to lie closer to the post. l prefer to inagnetize the jaws of the tool, in order that they may hold the staples, and thereby leave the users hands free to handle the tool and drive the staple. On the opposite end of the body of the tool is a pointed tooth 8, which may serve as a staple puller as illustrated in Fig. V, by projecting the point of the tooth into the staple and prying the same from its seat.
In using the tool the ears 5 are placed back of the wire so that the wire lies between the ears and the teeth 3., and may be pushed to the proper position along a post. When the wire is in place, a staple is proiected between the teeth 3 and over the wire. and driven into the post until it is anchored sufficientlv to hold against the tension of the wire when the tool is removed. and so that it mav be driven to its full extent after the removal of the tool. lt is apparent that the staple may be placed in the head of the tool before the wire is placed against the post. soy that it may be held in the tool between the wire and the base of the slide Dart. therehv leaving the hands of the user free to hold the tool and drive` the staple. and without the necessitv of the user handling the staple when the wire is under tension. Y
Having thus described mv invention. what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure bv Letters-Patent. is
1. A wire placer comprising a bodv member having` a. head provided with a longitudinal slot forming side teeth: each of said teeth beiner cut awav at one face to a ooint adiacent the base of the slot. and back-cut to form sockets and overhanging ears. and
said head being recessed at its base and alone.r the inner edges of said ears to form a pocket about the base of the slot, substantially as set forth.
2. A wire placer comprising` a head nrovided with a slot forming side teeth. each of said teeth having a. sharpened outer end and being beck-eut adjacent the base of the slot forming a socket, and having back-cut inner to form sockets and overhenging ears; the faces, substantially as set forth. 1o ears `and thehead being back-out to form a In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature pocket about the base of the slot, for, the inY presence of two Witnesses. 5 kpurpose eet forth. Y WALTON E. TAYLOR.
3. A Wire placer, having spaced teeth at Witnesses: one end, forming a slot, and an ear on each RUBY SToCKToN, I of said teeth, having a back-eut outer end, A ORESTES MITCHELL.
