To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, GEORGE SEACH, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Dubois, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Bundle-Tiers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bundle tiers, the primary object being to provide a simple, cheap and effective device for securely tying a bundle or package and which will accommodate itself to packages of various sizes.
The device is particularly adapted for tying of bundles or packages of letters or like mail matter, though not confined to such use, and in describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and wherein like numerals of reference will be employed to designate like parts throughout the different views of the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device partly broken away to better illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device applied to a package. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View of one of the fastening devices, and, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
The device embodies two tying straps of substantially equal length and which cross each other at right angles and are held securely fastened at the point where they cross. Each strap is adjustable in length, preferably at each end and the respective ends of each strap carry suitable co-acting fastening members. Preferably, the straps are elastic, but since considerable variation in their length is provided, they may if desired, be made of inelastic but flexible material. The straps are designated as 5. There are two of these straps and they are crossed one on the other at right angles. At the point where they cross, they are fastened by two disks 6 placed one on each side of the straps and securely fastened together and to the straps as by stitching 7. This means of connecting the two straps at their point of rections, and particularly against radial strain. Each strap is provided near each end with an adjusting loop 8 so that they may be adjusted to shorten or lengthen them, and each leg of each strap may be adjusted as to length independently of the remaining legs of the straps. One end of each strap carries an eye or loop 9, which co-acts with a hook-member 10 on the other end of the strap to fasten the straps around a package as 11. As herein shown, this hook-member is shown as of the usual spring type which swings on its pivot to open and closed positions. This type of fastener is particularly adapted for use on the device when the straps are of inelastic material, but when the straps are of elastic material, the eyes or loops 9 may be readily engaged with the hook-members 10 without swinging the latter to open position, or an ordinary hook-catch may be provided.
The manner in which the device is used will it is thought, be self-evident from the drawings. The straps passing around the four sides of the package securely binds the same within the tier, and the straps being fastened together at the point where they cross serves to hold the same in position when spread out as in Fig. l for the assembling thereon of a package. By reason of the loop adjustments on each strap, the device may be readily adjusted to provide for various shapes or sizes of packages.
