Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915..
Application filed July 29, 1914-. Serial No. 853,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at ltosanky, in the county of Bastrop and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises and Saw- Clamps; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to saw clamps and vises, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple vise and clamp to be operated by a foot pedal, and which will. quickly and firmly engage any article placed between the jaws and which can be readily operated for releasing the article clamped, and which will be simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in use and which can be manufactured at comparatively low cost.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vise and saw clamp made in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a standard having its lower end screw threaded as at 2 for engagement with a suitable base or support. The standard 1 is provided with a curved upper end 3 having a jaw member 1 formed thereon or connected thereto. The companion jaw member 5 is formed on an arm 6 pivoted at 7 to the standard 1 and provided with a lever or extension 8 which is pivotally connected at 9 to a link 10. A spring 11 connected to the standard 1 bears against the lever 8 to open the jaws 4- and 5. The link 10 is connected to a curved member 12, said link being pivoted upon a pin 13 to the curved member 12 and said member being pivoted at 14; to the standard 1 and slightly spaced there from by a block as shown. A link 15 is pivoted at 16 to the curved member 12 at one end and the opposite end is bent backwardly at 17 and pivoted at 18 to a foot lever 19. The foot lever 19 is pivoted at 20 to the standard 1, and is provided upon its upper surface with a series of ratchet teeth 21, while the outer end of the lever is flattened at 22 to form a foot rest.
A pawl or engaging member comprises an arm 23 pivoted at 24: to the standard 1 and provided with a curved downwardly extending portion 25 having an aperture 26 therein through which the foot lever 19 extends. Connected to the curved portion 25 of the arm 23 is a pawl or stop 27 designed for engaging the ratchet teeth 21 when the foot rest 22 is depressed for closing the jaws of the vise or clamp. The pawl 27 is provided with an outwardly projecting pedal 28 for holding the pawl 27 in engagement with the teeth 21, and the pedal and pawl are connected by means of a suitable bolt 29 to the arm 23 at the curved portion thereof.
A spring 30 is connected at one end to a ring or eye 31 on the arm 23, while the opposite end is connected to a ring or eye 32 attached to the standard 1.
The operation of the invention may be briefly described as follows: When the article to be clamped is placed between the jaws 4 and 5, the foot is placed upon the foot rest 22 and by pressure the jaws are closed and the pedal 27 is pressed down by the foot to engage with any one of the teeth 21 to hold the article between the jaws. When it is desired to release the article, the foot rest 22 is pressed down and the spring 30 will draw upward on the arm 23 and the spring 11 will open the jaws 4 and 5.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a device made in accordance with this invention may be used conveniently as a vise or as a saw clamp.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as de fined in the claims.
What is claimed is 1. A vise comprising a standard having a jaw formed thereon, a lever pivoted to the standard and provided with a jaw, a link connected to said lever, a curved member to which said link is pivoted, said curved member being pivoted to the standard and provided with a link connected to the opposite end thereof, said link being pivoted at its lower end to a foot lever, said foot lever being pivoted to the standard, and provided with a series of ratchet teeth thereon and a foot rest, an arm pivoted to the standard and provided with a pawl connected thereto and an aperture through which the foot lever extends, and a spring for holding the jaws open.
2. A vise and saw clamp comprising a standard, a aw member connected thereto,
a companion jaw pivoted to the standard and provided with a link and a curved mem flopieaof this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner standard, provided with a jaw, a member 20 provided with a aw VVILLIAIH T. KING. Witnesses F. V. MORGAN, G. E. WIEST.
