To all whomit may concern Be it known that I, DEWEY F. RICHARD- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scappoose, in the county of Columbia, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a pen holder.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein after the pen has been inserted therein it will be securely fastened.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the ready removal of a pen therefrom.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and subsequently claimed.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device with thepen point in place therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the device. Fig. 3 is a section taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views, my device comprises a body member 1 having formed in one end thereof a longitudinally extending hole 2 having a transverse hole 3 extending through the outer face of the body 1 and in communication with the hole 2, which last mentioned hole is internally threaded and in which is mounted a thumb screw 4. After the pen point 5 has been inserted into the hole 2 the thumb screw isturned once which causes it to engage the inner face of the said point and causes the same to bind against the walls of the hole 2 to maintain the point in its operative position.
In order that the point may be automatically expelled from its position in the hole 2, I have provided in the rear part of said hole a plug 6 of tubular formation and of such diameter as to fit within the hole 2, but allowing suificient room therebetween and between the walls of the hole 2 to allow the base of the pen point to be inserted. plug 6 are two arms 7 which encircle the shank of the thumb screw 4 and lie to each side of the same in order to position the said plug within the hole. This plug 6 is de tachably arranged within the hole 2 so that should it become necessary to repair the spring or clean the same it will be necessary to remove the thumb screw a when the said plug may be readily withdrawn.
In the upper face of the plug is formed a groove 8 having a butt shoulder 9 at its forward end and being open at its rear end. Loosely mounted in this slot and pressing against the shoulder 9 is a coil spring 10 arranged to press against the rear end of the slot 2 and extending upwardly from the face of the plug a suflicient distance to contact with the inner face of the hole 2 so that when a pen is inserted between the base of the hole and the face of the plug 6 and the rear end of the said point bears against the outer end of the spring 10 and as it is pushed inwardly compresses the same.
In operation the thumb screw 4 is withdrawn from the hole 3 a sufficient distance to allow a point to be inserted between the face of the hole and the plug 6, the pen point is then pushed inwardly and the rear end thereof pushes against the end of the spring 9 and causes the same to be compressed. The thumb screw is then rotated in the opposite direction and bears against the point on its under side so as to hold the same frictionally within the hole 2. When it is desired to replace the pen point by another or to remove it from the hole for any reason it is only necessary to withdraw the thumb screw 4: such a distance as to allow it to be disengaged from the pen point at which time the spring 10 will expand and press against the rear end of the slot 2, thus moving the forward end of the said spring toward the shoulder 9 and automatically ejecting the point. When the forward end of the spring 10 abuts against the shoulder 9 the point has been ejected and the spring is arrested from further forward movement by the said shoulder.
It is to be understood that the body of this device and the plug member may be made of wood and the screw and spring of metal, but it is obvious that numerous other materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
From the foregoing description it may be seen that I have provided a device in which a pen point may be readily inserted and held therein. I have further provided means within the said device comprising a spring for automatically ejecting said pen point when the holding means is released.
I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction of my invention shown, but only so far as is necessary by the claims, for it is obvious that numerous mechanical changes may be made Without departing from the scope of the claims.
VVhatis claimed is 1. Ina device of the class described, a body member of'conical formation having a hole in one end thereof extending longitu dinally and a hole arranged transversely in the member communicating with the first mentioned hole and internally threaded, a set screw engaging said threads adapted to secure a pen point within the first mentioned hole, a plug detachably arranged between the said set screw and the inner end of the hole, a groove 111 said plug, a spring arranged in said groove and adapted to bear against the end of the slot and to engage the pen point at its forward end.

In a device of the class described, a body portion, a hole formed longitudinally and in one end thereof, a second hole formed transversely of the hole and in communication with the first mentioned hole, a thumb screw extending through said last mentioned hole and transversely across the first mentioned hole, a plug arranged between the said screw and the rear end of the first mentioned hole, said plug having outwardly extending shoulders thereon adapted to straddle the said screw to maintain the plug in a predetermined position, a spring arranged on the upper face of said plug to automatically eject the pen point when the screw is loosened.
