BENJAMIN E. MANIER', or GREEN ISLAND, NEW YORK, ASSIeNoR To -HIMSELE AND rrIIoIIAS ESMITII, 0E SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 113,539, ama Aprirn, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BERTHS FOR SLEEPING-CARS.
Tle Schedule referred 7to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may ooncm: Y
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. ,MANIER, of Green Island, iu the county of Albanyl and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Sleeping-Gars and I do hereby declare that the following is a full," clear, and exact description thereof which will enable'others skilled in the art to make and use tlie saure, reference being had to the accompanying drawingformiug part ofthis specification.
My invention consists in certain improvements in sleeping-cars, which will first be described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly pointedout in the claim.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a part of a car,
showing afi-ont elevation of a berthV arranged according to my' improvements; .and
Figure 2 is a transverse section through the car and end elevation of the berth.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A isthe frame ofv'the berth, vwhich is hinged or pivoted to the side of the car at B, in the ordinary way, to swing up against the top of the car, as'iudicated by dotted lines O when not in use.
D represents a machine-chain vattached to the frame A, near the outer edge, and working over the guidepulleys E F, suitably arranged to hold the chain in the properposition to close the berth up against the top ofthe car, when required, bythe aid of a weight, G, suspended from the chain in the vertical space H, between the outer and inner walls of the car side.
'Iwo of these chains or ropes and weights are used justing screw, H, and nut, or other adjusting devices,
of the stops K, by which -they are arrested for softening the vshocks of the weights when suddenly forced up against the said stops,"and. I propose to cdver the weights with soft material to make them as noiseless as possible when working along the sides of 'the chamber in which they Work.
This arrangement is not so' expensive .as .that in which the jointed braces are used, as has'been here` tofore done, and it is I nucu` more durable'and con-` venient, requiring'lesslabo' in opening `and closing the berth. It also obviates the .necessity for fastenings to hold the berth up, as before. v
The braces heretofore used are very liable to be bent bythe persons sleepinglin the berths pressing.
their feet against them, andfwhen bent they cannot be operated. l
vIlaw'ingthus described my invention,
I claim' as new anddesire to secure by Letters Pateut- 1. The adjustable attachment of the weights to the chains by means of the adjusting screw and nut, substantially as specified.
2. The arrangement, with the weights or the stops K, of the cushions I,.substantially as specified.
' BENJ. F. MANIER.
