FOLDING-TOP CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,528, dated December 14, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ENOCH P. HINOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, Fairfield county, Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding-Top'Garriages, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to certain new and uscful improvements in the construction and arrangement of the spring devices employed in connection with foldingtop carriages, such as landaus, as will be hereinafter in detail described.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a detail elevation of the front portion of a landau;

3, a view similar to Fig. 2, with the upper portion thrown down; Fig. 4, a'detail view of the strap-fastening device; and Fig. 5, a section thereof through the center, showing the mode of securing the bolt and strap in place.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the several figures.
A B represent the stationary and movable parts,' respectiyely, ofthe frame `of the carriage, hinged at O, in the usual manner.
D isa metal plate secured to the portion A at the point indicated in the drawings, and formed with an extension or arm, E, having a hole or eye in its lower end, and to which is secured, by a bolt or rivet, a, a link, F, the lower end of which is bifurcated, as clearly shown at Figs. 4 and 5, and furnished with a screw-bolt, Gr.
H is a lug secured to the lower or stationary pillar, B, and its upper end is formed substantially like the link F, and provided with screwbolt I.
The link F and lug H are connected by a strong at rubber band, K, which is secured in place by the bolts Gr I, and by this means it kmay readily be removed for the purpose of substituting new ones of varying length or strength.
By this construction and arrangementof devices it will be seen that the falling front of th'e carriage is counterbalanced, and may be opened and closed with great facility.
I have illustrated the devices applied only at one point 5 but it is obvious that they may be used at more than one or at any desired place.
I am aware that adjustable metallic springs have been arranged within the pillars of folding-top carriages; but in the use of all such def vices there is a disagreeable noise attendant with the movement of the springs, and aconstant liability of the springs getting out of order and becoming inelastic, and, independent of these objections, all these devices are more or less complicated and expensive, while my improved spring is economic ot' construction and very readily applied.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the movable portion A and stationary portion B of afolding-top carriage, the metallic devices D E F H and elastio rubber band K, secnredin place by screwbolts G I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
