To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED RE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Key Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact' description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to looks and has for one of its objects the provision of a double key lock provided with a plurality of safety-devices whereby the lock is impregnable against unauthorized persons.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a double key lock requiring the use of two keys of different constructions before entrance can be had from the outside, and the further provision of safety devices to be operated from the outside and the inside thus furnishing additional security to the look. And a still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a double key lock which may be readily applied to doors of varying thicknesses without requiring any alterations in the lock construction.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of means for preventing the manipulation of the locking bolt through the means of tools or other appliances in And still another object of this invention resides in the-provision of a lock consisting of few parts, eflicient and durable in purpose, easy to repair, and which may be manufactured and sold upon the market at a nominal cost.
These and other objects will more fully appear and the nature of the invention be more clearly understood by the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts thereof as described in the following specification, defined in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

I deem it expedient to here state that the interfitting and interengaging members of the lock and keys are to be of different figurations or conformations in order that the locks can only beoperated by the key espe cially designed therefor, which forthe sake of convenience and illustration the construction illustrated in the drawings and the description thereof will'be confined to only one of theforms.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the door frame rabbeted as at 2 to provide the jamb 3, and seated within the door frame 1 is the keeper 4 having the rounded end 5,
the locking bolt receiving aperture 6 and secured within the door frame 1 by" the screws 7.
8 denotes the door, and upon the swinging edge thereof is the rabbeted portion 9 providing the shoulder 10 for engaging the jamb strip 3when the door is'closed, and arranged upon the inner side of the door adjacent the swinging edge and in the same horizontal plane as the keeper 4 is the safety plate 11 secured upon the door 8 through the means of the screws 12, the safety plate 11 being positioned upon the door 8'in a manner wherein the plate 11 will be brought in close contact with the keeper 4: when the door is closed, this plate being provided to prevent the insertion of a sharp instrument or tool for the purpose of raising the looking bolt by unauthorized persons.
Within the door 8 adjacent the swinging edge thereof and in the same horizontal more than half of the distance therethrough,
the remaining portions of the inner Walls of the barrels 15 and 16 being smooth. The end portions of the barrels 15 and 16 are reduced as at 19 and 20, the reduced ends passing through corresponding apertures 21 and 22 formed in the escutcheon plate 23, the projecting ends being outwardly flared and crimped upon the exterior surface of the escutcheon plate 23 as at 24. The reduced portions 19 and 20 0f the barrels 15 and 16 provide the shoulders 25 and 26 and within the barrels 15 and 16 and seated against the shoulders 25 and 26 are the rotatable cylinders 27 and 28 having arranged upon the inner Walls thereof the laterally extending and longitudinally alined pins Y29 and 30, the cylinders 27 and 28 being pre vented from longitudinal movement by the inwardly projecting pins 31 and 32 arranged in the walls of the respective barrels 15 and 16.
Within the inner surface of the door 8 and surrounding the bores 13 and 14.is the circular recess 33 in which is seated the washer 34 provided with diametrically arranged and contiguous apertures 35 and 36, each of the apertures 35 and 36 being provided with the annual recesses 37 and 38 in which is seated the flanged heads 39 and 40 of the sleeves 41 and 42, the sleeves 41 and 42 being externally screw threaded for engaging the internal screw threads of the respective barrels 15 and 16. The sleeves 41 and 42 each being centrally bored, and further counter-bored to provide the shoulders 43 and 44, and upon the shoulder 43 of the sleeve 41 is rotatably mounted the disk 45 provided with the diametrical slot 46 extending approximately therethrough, and within the slot 46 at a point intermediate of the ends of the slot 46 and projecting inwardly from one of the side walls thereof is the lug 47, the lug 47 extending approximately half way across the slot 46, and for retaining the rotatable disk 45 within the sleeve 41 is the bushing 48, the bushing 48 extending from the disk 45 to the exterior of the sleeve 41 and fixedly engaging the inner walls thereof, thus preventing the displacement of the rotatable disk 45.
Arranged upon the inner side of the door and over the washer 33 is the circular cover plate 49 secured to the door 8 through the medium of the screws 50, the cover plate 49 has the central aperture 51 arranged therein and registering with the bore of the bushing 48, and also arranged in the cover plate 49 adjacent its edge and in registry with the bore of the sleeve 42 is the screw threaded aperture 52 having threaded therein the easing 53, one end projecting into the bore of the sleeve 42 and being provided with the cam face 54 upon which is designed to travel the laterally projecting pin 55 arranged upon the safety latch stem 56, the stem 56 having its extremity within the sleeve 42 slightly reduced and provided with the hexagonal key engaging member 57, this member, however, may be formed of any other suitable shape for interfitting the socket formed in a specifically constructed key. Within the casing 53 and upon the stem 56 operates the outer safety latch 58 which is normally forced outwardly by the spring 59, the outward movement of the latch 58 being restricted by the contact of the pin with the cam face 54 of the casing 53 within the sleeve 42. Arranged upon the cover plate 49 and concentric with the central aperture 51 thereof, is the approximately semi-circular rib 60 terminating in the rounded ends 61 and provided with the internal screw threaded recesses 62 for receiving the screws 63 for securing the circular retaining plate 64 upon the rib 60, the heads of the screws 63 being counter sunk in the upper surface of the plate 64. The plate has a central aperture 65 arranged therein, and also arranged adjacent the edge of the retaining plate 64 in alinement with the aperture 52 of the cover plate 49 is the screw threaded aperture 66 in which is threaded the casing 67 having one of its ends projecting outwardly beyond the outer surface of the plate 64, and upon the projecting end of the casing 67 is the cam face 68, and operating within the casing 67 is the inner safety latch 69 provided with the screw threaded stem 70 projecting outwardly or beyond the cam surface 68 of the casing 67 and the latch 69 is forced outwardly by the spring 71, and threaded upon the stem 7 0 is the knurled knob 72 for operating the inner safety latch 69, the knob 72 having a lug 73 arranged upon its inner face constantly engaging the cam face 68 of the casing 67 and held in such en agement under the action of the spring 71.
interposed between the cover plate 49 and the retaining plate 64 is the locking bolt 74, the outer end of which is adapted to be seated in the recess 6 of the keeper 4 when the door is in closed position. At the opposite end of the locking bolt 74 is arranged a pivot pin which is secured in the end of the locking belt 74 by any suitable means and having one of its ends projecting outwardly as at 75 for revolving in the aperture 65 of the retaining plate 64 and the opposite end 76 projecting inwardly through the aperture 51 of the cover plate 49 and into the bushing 48 within the sleeve 41 and revolubly mounted therein thus providing for the swinging movement of the locking bolt 74.
Upon the end of the pin 76 is formed the diametrical slot 77 in which are secured the teeth or interfitting members 7 8, and formed in the inner side of the locking bolt 74 and slightly remote from the pin 76 is the recess 79 for receiving the outer safety latch 58,
and upon the inner face of the locking bolt 74 are provided the apertures 80 and 81 arranged in transverse alinement with each other, these apertures being designed for receiving the inner safety latch 69 respectively, the aperture 80 receiving the inner safety latch 69 when the bolt 74 is in looking engagement with the keeper 4, the aperture 81 receiving the latch 69 when the bolt 74 is to be held in elevated and unlocked position when desired, and for manually operating the locking bolt 74 the knob or handle 82 is provided.
In Fig. 6 is shown the key for actuating the outer safety latch 58, this key 83 being solid and cylindrical in form and provided with the elongated groove 84 in one of its sides in which the pins 30 of the cylinder 28 travel when the key is inserted in the lock, the end of the key 83 being provided with the socket 85 of the conformation of the interengaging member 57 of the outer safety latch 58, whereby upon the rotation of the key 83, the safety latch 58 will be revolved, thus causing the pin 55 of the stem 56 to travel outwardly upon the cam face 54 of the casing 53, this movement withdrawing the latch 58 from within the aperture 79 of the locking bolt 7 4, which bolt is now ready to be actuated by a subsequently used key, the key 83 being provided with the knurled end 86 for the more eflicient rotation of the key.
For completing the unlocking operation, the key 87 shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9 is now used, this key is ground or otherwise fiattened upon two sides as shown in Fig. 7 to provide the tongue 89 and at the end of the tongue 89 is provided the lugs 90, the key 87 having formed at one of its flattened sides, the elongated grooves 91 as shown in Fig. 8, and at the opposite flattened side with the short groove 92 whereby upon the insertion of the key 87 in the lock for completing the unlocking operation, the groove 91 receives the pins 29 of the cylinder 27, and upon the further movement of the key 87 the tongue 89 passes through the slot 46 of the rotatable disk 45, the lug 47 within the slot 46 travels in the groove 92 at the opposite side of the key 87, and upon the further movement of the key, the lugs 90 interengage the teeth or interfitting members 78 of the pin 76 of the locking bolt 74, whereby upon rotation of the key 87 toward the right the cylinder 27, the disk 45 and the pin 76 will be rotated and the locking bolt 74 is thereby elevated above the end 5 of the keeper 4 and the door 8 is free to be opened. It will thus be seen that unless a person is possessed of two specifically constructed keys, it is impossible to operate the look, as the outer safety latch has to be previously withdrawn from its engagement with the locking bolt before the locking bolt can be actuated by the subsequent key, and
the bolt 74 in elevated position. The key 87 is also provided with the knurled end 88, and all of the keys may be further provided with the transversely arranged aperture 93 at the knurled end of the key for conveniently carrying the same upon a key ring.
WVhile I have here shown and described the preferred form of my invention I hereby reserve the right to make such variations and alterations therein from time to time as I may deem expedient, and which will neither depart from the spirit of this invention nor conflict with the scope of the claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In a look, a swinging locking bolt revolubly mounted within said look upon a door for engaging a keeper, a key operated means for actuating said locking bolt from the outside of the door, a key operated means for preventing the actuation of said locking bolt until released by the key from the outside of the door, a manually operated means upon said lock at the inner side of the door for retaining said locking bolt in locked engagement with said keeper, and means for retaining said locking bolt out of engagement with said keeper when desired.
2. In a look, a swinging locking bolt revolubly mounted within said look upon a door for engaging a keeper, a key operated means for actuating said locking bolt from the outside of the door, a key operated means for preventing the actuation of said locking bolt until released by the key from the outside of the door, a manually operated means upon said lock at the inner side of the door for retaining said locking bolt in locked engagement with said keeper, said manually operated means also retaining said looking bolt out of engagement with said keeper when desired, and means for contacting with said locking bolt for limiting the manipulation of said locking bolt.
3. In a look, a swinging locking bolt rev olubly mounted within said look upon a door; for engaging a keeper, a key operated means for actuating said locking bolt from the outside of the door, a key operated means for preventing the actuation of said locking bolt until released by the key from the out- I locking bolt coacting With said manually operated means, and means for contacting with said locking bolt for limiting the movement of said locking bolt for bringing said engaging means into registration with said manually operated means.
4. In a look, a swinging locking bolt revolubly mounted Within said look upon a door for engaging a keeper, a key operated means for actuating said locking bolt from the outside of the door, a key operated means for preventing the actuation of said locking bolt until released by the key from the outside or the door, a manually operated means upon said look at the inner side of the door for retaining said locking bolt in locked engagement With said keeper, said manually operated means for also retaining said locking bolt out of engagement With said keeper When desired, engaging means upon said locking bolt co-acting With said manually operated means, means for contacting with said locking bolt for limiting the movement of said locking bolt "for bringing said engaging means into registration with said manually operated means, and means Within said look ior adjusting the same for readily securing the lock upon doors of Various Widths.
