BROOM-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH RABAsA, a'
subject of the King of Spain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Broom-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in protecting devices for brooms, and has for an object to provide an improved structure which may be readily applied and removed and while applied properly hold the straws or fibers in position.
Another object of the invention is to'provide a protector which will protect the upper part of the broom and also the broom intermediate the length for preventing the spreading of the broom straws while the broom is in use.
In carrying out the objects of the invention an upper solid top portion is provided which is adapted to fit against the upper part of the broom and be secured thereto by a suitable clamping screw. This solid part has associated therewith crossed resilient members adapted to be arranged on each edge of the broom. These resilient members carry crossed bars or members which extend across the sides of the broom. Suitable locking members are provided for locking the various members together whereby the broom cannot be spread to any appreciable extent.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a front elevation of an embodiment of the invention shown applied to a broom; Fig. 2 is aside view of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the structure shown in Fig. 1, the same being taken on line 33.
7 Referring to the accompanying drawings by numeral, 1 indicates the usual straws of a broom and 2 the usual handle which may be secured in place in any desired manner. Arranged on the upper part 3 of the broom is a solid portion 4: formed of sheet metal or any other desired material and provided with rolled edges 5 and 6. These edges are adapted to receive the ends of crossed braces 7 and 8 and 9 and 10. The lower end of the crossed braces 10 is bent and pressed at 11 so as to provide a hook member 12 and a cross bar 13. ,Cross bar 13 extends across one slde of the straws 1 and interlocks with the hook 14, which hook is formed from the .lower portion of member 7, member 7 being also provided with an extension or cross bar 15 interlocking with the hook 12. It is to be noted that the members 7 and 10 are pressed at 11 and 16, respectively, so as to provide the respective hooks 12 and 14: and the cross bars 13 and 15. The material from which members 7 to 16 are made is a resilient metal of any desired kind, whereby the bristles or straws of the broom are resiliently held in positioin. Whenever it is desired to remove the device from the broom the screw 17 which is preferably provided with a winged head is loosened and then the hook members 12 and 14: released, after which the bars 13 and 15 are spread or moved away from each other and the entire device slid upwardly over the handle 2. By this construction and arrangement a readily removable protecting device is provided which will press against the sides of the broom and also the edges for holding the straws close together at all times either while the broom is in use or while it is idle. Also, the upper part of the broom is thoroughly protected by the solid portion 4.
What I claim is 1. In a broom protector of the character described, a top portion, means for clamping the same to a broom, said top portion being provided with rolled edges, a pair of crossed wires on each edge of the top portion extending into said rolled edges for providing protecting members for the edges of a broom, and means extending fromsaid crossed wires for providing end members and side members inclosing said broom, all of said members being resilient so as to resiliently hold the straws of a. broom properly in position.
2. In a broom protector of the character described, a solid top portion adapted to frame surrounding the sides of a broom so 10 as to prevent the spreading thereof.
