To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORLA H. Nn'rnms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful improvemcnts in Attachments for VVringers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an attachment for wringers or mangles and more particularly to a safety de ice for releasing the pressure r'olls should any ob ects become unduly or accidentally caught between the rolls and otherwise necessitating the back ing or reverse movement of the rolls that would only add to or augment the in ury to the parts ofthe wringer or things between the rolls. The invention has for an object to prov de an auxiliary device which may be readily applied to wringers of the ordinaryconstruction now in use, whereby the quick and instantaneous releasing of the rolls may be accomplished in the case of emergency.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character aforesaid which is in the readily available reach of the operator and which when operated will not be severed from the wringer or otherwise tend to injure the operator during the releasing of the pressure springs.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will vto be readily adjusted to its former state.
A further object of the invention is to prothe purpose specified which will be strong, durable and efficient when in use and comparatively cheap in. the cost of manufacture, thereby rendering the same commercially desirable.

in the accompanying drawings wherein like and corresponding parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views, I have illustrated a wringer comprising a pair of side standards 1 and 2 respectively in which are mounted bearings 3 which carry the shafts 4 of the upper and lower wringer rolls 5 and 6 respectively. One end of the shaft as indicated by the numeral 7 of the lower wringcr roll 6 projects beyond the roller and is operatively connected in any well known and preferred manner to means for rotating the shaft whereby the Wringer rolls may be rotatedin the usual manner. Resting within the standards 1 and 2 and upon the bearings 3 are the usual coiled tension springs 8 which force the rolls together in the customary manner. A cross bar 9 is connected to the upper end of the standards 1 and 2 and has adjustably mounted therein thumb screws 10 for adjusting the tension of the springs 8. The structure as before described forms no part of the present invention but is illustrated to show one form of the Wringer to which my improved attachment may be ap plied.
The auxiliary attachment forming the subject-matter of the present invention and one embodiment of which-I have disclosed, comprises a bar 11 beingpreferably made of sheet metal and having a cam lever 12 pivotally secured to one end thereof in any prefcrred or well known manner, or as at 13. Formed within the bar 11 adjacent each end thereof are openings 13 through which the lower end of the thumb screws 10 are adapted to project for a purpose which will be later described. Within the upper face of bar 11 I provide a pair of elongated inclined recesses 14, one of which communicates with one side of each opening 13 and the lower ends of the thumb screws 10 are adapted to normally rest within said recesses. The cam lever 12 has formed integral therewith a segmental cam 15 which is adapted to rest against the outer face of the standard 2.
In applying my attachment to wringers of ordinary construction, or as disclosed in the drawings, the bar 11 is inserted between the thumb screws 10 thenrest within the are cesses 14 whereby the thumb screw will be permitted to be adjusted to increase or diminish tension of the coil springs 8. For releasing the pressure between the wringer rolls, the cam lever 12 is moved in position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings thereby pulling the bar 11 to one side until the openings 13' formed therein register with the lower ends of the thumb screws 10. When the openings 13 are in alinement with the lower ends of the thumb screws the springs 8 which normally press upwardly against the plate 11 force the plate upwardly into a position as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 1 of the drawing, thereby releasing the tension of the springs which in turn also release the tension between the Wringer rolls. The medial portion of the bar 11 is off-set as at 16 thereby providing a handle whereby the operator may grip the bar and force the same downwardly in replacing the device in its original osition.
To prevent t e cam 15 from disfiguring the outer face of the standard 2, I provide therefor a leather trated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. From the foregoing it is obvious that this safety attachment may be readily applied to the ordinary wringer now in use and that the tension between the wringer rolls may be adjusted in the usual manner, but in the case of an emergency the same may be readily released to prevent injury to the articles between the rolls or to the operator. -It will also be seen that the operator may readily force the attachment downwardly upon gripping the handle 16 and again place the rolls under tension without adjusting the thumb screws.
I claim 1. The combination with a wringer and pressure means and pressure rolls therefor, of a single bar associated with said pressure rolls and means and means for laterally moving said bar whereby the pressure between the rolls will be released, at both ends thereof simultaneously.
2. The combination with a wringer comprising a pair of standards, wringer rolls journaled therein springs resting upon one of the said wringer rolls, thumb screws for adjusting the tension of said springs, a bar interposed between said springs and thumb screws, and means for operating said bar whereby the sprin s will be released from the thumb screws or the purpose specified.
3. The combination with a wringer comprising standards, wringer rolls journaled therein, coil springs mounted Within the standards and resting upon one of the wringer rolls, a rectangular plate resting upon the springs, resting upon the said plate, thesaid plate having openings formed therein, means fo washer 17 as clearly illus adjustable thumb screws shifting said plate whereby thumb.

mally resting upon one of the said rolls, a bar resting upon the said springs, means f adjusting the tension of the said s rings, cam lever carried by the bar and me whereby upon the operation of said i ver, springs may be released for the pur cse specified.
The combination of a wringer having wringer rolls journaled therein, coil springs for increasing the tension between wringer rolls, a bar resting upon said coii springs, means for adjusting said bar whereby the tension of the springs will be increased and means for shifting said bar whereby the tension of the springs wili be released.
6. A safety attachment for wringers comprising a rectangular bar having openings formed therein adjacent each end there of, the upper face of the said having alining recesses formed therein and each communicating with one of said openings and a cam lever carried. by the said bar for the purpose specified.
7. The combination with a wringer com prising a pair'of standards, rolls journaled Within said standards, springs carried by the standards for increasing the pressure between the rolls, a bar resting upon said springs, means for vertically adjusting said bar, a lever pivotally secured to one end of said bar, a cam carried by one end of said lever and adapted to rest upon the outer face of one of the said standards, and means whereby upon. the operation of said lever the pressure between the rolls will be released.
8. The combination with a wringer comprising a support, wringer rolls journaled therein; coil springs carried by the support for increasing the tension between the rolls, a bar resting upon said springs, thumb screws for vertically adjusting said bar, the said. bar having openings formed therein adjacent each end thereof, the medial portion of said bar being ofi-set to form a handle and a cam lever carried by one end of said bar whereby upon the operation of the lever the thumb screws will register with the openings formed within the bar for releasing the tension between the Wringer rolls.
9. In apparatus of the class described, pressure rolls, springs therefor, means for adjusting the tension of interposed between said means and said springs, and readily operated means for shifting said bar to release the springs.
