To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MANNING M. HUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Napa, in the county of Napa and State of California; have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved keyless lock and the invention is to provide a lock which is so constructed that it does not need a key for releasing the lock and which is also so constructed that the hasp cannot be released from the body ofthe look when the combination' is set without the sliding strips mounted in the body portion being moved to a certain-position.
, Another object of the invention is to provide a lock which will be flat and not take up much room.
Another object of the invention is to providea lock which willbe very simple'in construction and which will requirea comparatively few number'of parts.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a plan vlew of the improved lock. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the improved lock. Fig. 3 is a view of the body portion of the lock with the disk holding plate and cover plate removed. Fig. t is a planview looking at the disk holding plate. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hasp." .Fi g. 6 is an edge view of one of the locking disks.
The lock has its bodv portion 10 provided with cut out portions 11 and 12 which form seats for the sliding strips 13 and 14. The sliding strip 13 is provided at the inner end with a heel 15 which is intended to engage the shoulder 16 and prevent the strip 13 from being drawn entirely from the seat 11. The shoulder 16 is positioned closer to the the-edge 17 of the body portion 10 -thari the shoulder 18 so thatvwhen the strip 13 is drawn to its outermost position; the inner end 19 of the strip will noteXtend over the slot 20 formed in the bodvportionld The strip 14 which is provided with a heel 21 for engaging the shoulder .18 is provided with a notch 22adaptedto register with the slot 23 formed. in the'body portion 10 when the strip 1 1 is almost entirely drawn to its outermost position. It will thus be seen that when the two strips are drawn to principal object of the their outermost positions thenotch 22 will not register with the notch 23 and thus the hasp cannot be removed. p
A plate 24 is placed upon the body portion 10 and is provided with circular openings 25 and 26 which form seats for the disks 27 and 28, notches 29 and 30 lead from the openings 25 and 26 and register with the openings 20 and'23 formed in the body portion. The disks 27 and 28 are provided with notches 31 and 32-which register with the openings 20 and 23 when the disks are turned to the proper position thus permitting the fingers 33 and 34; of the hasp 35 to pass extendtrom the disks27 and 28 so that the disks may be'turned when the cover plate is secured to the body portion by'means ot the rivets 39.
' Pointers 4E0 and ll which also serve as means for facilitating the turningjof the disks are passed through openings 42'formed in the stems of the disk. In order to permit a person to accurately set the disks dials are stamped or printed upon the cover 33 so that the person who desires toreleas'ethe lock may turn the indicating fingers to the proper places and thus bring thenotches 31 and 32 to the positions shown in "Fig. :4.
lVhen using'this lock the hasp is secured to one article such as the cover of a suit case or trunk and the bodv portion is secured to the body portion of the trunk or suit case.
The trunk cover is then closed and the fingers 33 and 34'pass through theopenings formed in the cover 38 and through'the registering openings formed in the late 24.'bodv portionlO and disks 27 and 28. The disks will now be turned tdscatter the combination and the hasp will be securely held in the locked position. It should be noted that the fingers 33 and 34 are provided with slots 43 and 44 so thatthe strips 13 and 14 'canbe moved in the bodv portion of the look when the, hasp is in a locked position. I When releasing th lock'thestrip 13 will be drawn at its full length and the strip 14 then drawn out for a portion of its length until the notch 22 registers with the notch 23. If desired the strips may have lines marked upon them so that it cannot be readily ascertained whether or'not the strip114- has been drawn out the proper distance. The disks will now be turned to the roper position and the fingers of the hasp can be drawn out of the alined notches thus releasing the hasp from the body portion of the latter.
The notches 31 and 32 can be cut in any desired places upon the disks but it is pre-' ferred to have them cut at points which will require the indicating pins 40 and 41 to be turned to diflerent places upon the'dials or to so cut them that when the disks are in the releasing'positions the pins will extend in opposite directions. This, however,v is optional with the personmanufacturing the locks.
This lock can be used in connection with trunks or suit casesor can be used upon doors, it being used'on'the'doorin the same manner as'with the suit case or by being used in the same manner as an article to be locked. When used as a padlock the-hasp will be released and after being.- passed through? the article which it is desired to secure, will be locked:to the body portion-in the" manner already described.
What I claim is 1. A- look comprisingia body portion provided with recesses forming pockets, strips slidably mounted in said recesses and. ex.- tending beyond said body portion,; means for limiting the outward. movement of said strips, one of said strips being: provided with a notch for registering: with an opening formed in said body portion, the other of said strips being drawn toward the second opening formed in said body portion when in" anextended position, a plate secured to saidbody portion and provided with openings registering with the openings. of said body portion, locking disks rotatably carried by said plate and provided: with notches for registering with the openings of, said body portion, a cover plate secured upon said last mentioned plate and provided with openings for registering with the openings of said body portion, and a hasp; provided with fingers extending through the notches of said body portion and plates and provided with notches for permitting said strips to be moved inwardly to pass through the notches and for permitting said disks to be turned to a locked position and extend through the notches of the. fingers to release bly secure said hasp.
2. A look comprising a body portion provided with seats and with openings communicating with said seats, strips slidably mounted in said seats, a plate placed upon said body portion and provided with circular openings cut to extend across said seats and being also provided with openings registering with the openings of said body portion, locking disks rotatably mounted in the circular openings of said plate and provided with notches for registering with the notchesof said body portion and with the notches of said plate, a cover secured upon said plate and provided with openings registering with the openings of said plate and body portion, and a hasp provided with fingers extending through the registering openings of said body portion plate and cover and provided with notches through which said disks and strips are adapted to pass to removably secure said hasp to said body portion.

A lock comprising a body portion pro- Videdwith openings, a plate secured upon said body. portion and provided, with openings registering with the openings of said body portion, locking-strips slidably mounted between said body portion and plate and extending across the openings of saidbody portion when in a locked position, locking disks rotatably carried by said plate and provided. with notches for registering with the openings of said body portion. and plate when; in a released position, a cover secured upon said plate for holding said disks in place and being provided with openings registering with the openings of said plate, and a hasp provided with fingers for extending through the registering openings of said cover plate and body portion and provided with notches through which said strips and disks are adapted to pass when in a locked position to releasably secure said hasp.
4. A lock comprising a body portion provided with openings, a plate secured upon said body portion and provided with openings registering with the openings of said body portion, locking means slidably mounted between said body portion and plate and extending partially across the openings of the same when in a locked position, means for limiting the outward movement of said locking means, locking means rotatably carried by said plate and extending partially across the openings of said plate and body portion and provided with notches for registering with-the openings when in a releasing position, a cover secured upon said plate and provided with openings registering with the openings of said plate, and a hasp provided with fingers extending through theregistering openings of said cover plate and body portion and provided with notches for releasing said sliding and rotatably mounted locking means whereby said hasp may be releasably secured.

A look comprising a body portion, a plate fitting upon said body portion, a cover fitting upon said plate, said cover plate and body portion being provided with registering openings, a hasp, fingers extending from said hasp through, the registering openings of said co er pla e and dy Portion and provided with notches, rotatably mounted locking means for passing through the notches of said fingers to look said hasp and provided with notches for permitting said fingers to be Withdrawn, and slidably mounted locking means for passing through said notches to lock said hasp.
6. A look comprising a body portion provided with openings, strips slidably connected with said body portion and extending across said openings when in a locked position, one of said strips being provided with a notch for registering with one of the openings of said body portion when in a re-' leased position, a cover provided with openings registering with the openings of said body portion, and a hasp provided with fingers for extending through the registering openings of said cover and body portion and provided with notches for permitting said strips to engage said fingers and notches of said hasp to lock said hasp and.
provided with notches for permitting said fingers to be withdrawn, and slidably mount-v ed locking means for passing through said notches to look said hasp.
