a citizen of the United. States, residing at;

lock which will work noiselessly, and which may be operated without the use of springs. It is within the scope of the invention, to increase the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.

\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which willappear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The case of the padlock herein disclosed comprises a boxlike body 1, open at one side, and provided at one end with openings 2 and b. In the edge of the top of the body 1 there is a notch 1 and in the edge of one side wall of the body there 18 another notch 5 (see F 1g.

The closure 11 may be held in place by a rivet 14: or like device which engagesthe body 1.

Journaled for. rotation in the body 1 and in the bearing plate 7 is a tumbler shaft 15, upon which are mounted to rotate tumblers 16, 17 and 18,the tumblers having openings notches or openings may be brought into alinement by rotating the tumblers. The tumblers are spaced by hubs 20 and no novelty is claimed by the specific form of tumblers shown. In the tumbler 17 is mounted a pin 21 which projects beyond opposite faces of the tumbler, the pin 21 being adapted to cooperate with a similar pin 22 in the tumbler 16, one end of the pin 21 cooperating with a pin 23 in the tumbler 18. The tumbler shaft 15 is equipped with a radial finger 2 1 which is adapted to engage one end of the pin22 in the outermost tumbler 16.

The invention further includes a dog 25 which, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, is in slidablc contact with one wall of the body 1 of the lock. The dog 25, as shown in Fig. 11 is equipped with an opening 26, receiving the stem 527 of abutton 28, the button 28 being located upon the outside of the body 1 and the stem 27 being mounted to slide in a slot 29 in the body. At one end, the dog 25 is provided with an arm 30, terminated in a finger 31 which may be moved into the openings 19 in the tumblers 16, 17 and 18, whcn these openings are alincd. The combination may be changed by replacing one dial 50 by another dial ot' diil'erent form, it being unnecessary to take the lock apart or to shift the tumblers, when the combination is to be changed. It is to be noted that the lock is devoid of springs and that it will operate without noise.

Having thus described the invention,what is claimed is 1. A permutation padlock comprising a case; a tumbler journaled therein and having an opening; a shackle movable in the case; a latch cooperating with the shackle and fulcrumed intermediate its ends on the case; a dog upheld by one end of the latch and pivotally connected therewith and constituting the sole means for moving the latch to dispose the other end thereof in the path of the shackle the dog being accessible from the outside of the case, and a part of the dog being adapted to register in the opening in the tumbler.

2. A permutation padlock comprising a case; a tumbler journaled in the case and having an opening; a dog mounted for right-line sliding movement in the case and accessible from the outside of the case, a portion of the dog being adapted to regis ter in the opening in the tumbler; a latch pivoted to the case and to the dog; a mov able shackle in the case, the shackle being provided with a shoulder adapted to engage the latch, the shoulder being movable into locked and unlocked relation to the latch only when the dog is in said opening.

A permutation padlock comprising a *ase; a tumbler journaled in the case and provided with an opening; a dog in slidable contact with one wall of the case, the dog being provided with substantially parallel projecting arms, one of which is provided with afinger adapted to register in the opening in the tumbler; a button upon the dog, accessible from the outside of the case; a latch pivoted in the case and pivotally connected with the other arm of the dog independently of the case; and a shackle slidable in the case and engageable by the latch,

A permutation padlock comprising a case; a shackle movable within the case and having a shoulder; a latch pivoted in the case and cooperating with the shoulder; a dog pivoted to the latch and supported for sliding movement on the case, the dog being accessible from the outside of the case; and a tumbler journaled in the case and having an opening in which the dog is adapted to register, a part of the dog engaging the periphery of the tumbler after the tumbler has been rotated to move the open ing therein out of alinemcnt with said part of the dog both when the shoulder is above and below the latch, thereby preventing either an opening or a closing of the shackle, saving when the dog is in the opening in the tumbler.

7. In a permutation padlock, a case; a shackle movable in the case; a latch pivoted in the case and cooperating with the shackle; a dog accessible from the outside of the case and held to the case for sliding movement in a certain direction, the dog being loosely secured to the latch, whereby the weight oi the dog will tend to swing the latch toward the shackle, and whereby the latch may move with respect to the dog while the latch is being actuated by the dog; and a tumbler in the case, with which tumbler the dogcooperates.
