Description

. E. W. EVANS.
GAS BURNER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 5,1914.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915;
ERNEST W. EVANS, 0F ROBINSON, ILLINOIS.
GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ap`1-.c,1915.
Application led June 5, 1914. Serial No. 843,245.
To all yLi/wm fit may concern:
Be it known that I, lnxns'r VI. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residi'ng at Robinson, in the county of Crawford and State of. Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas burners and more particularly to a gas burner designed for use in connection with a water heater, such as shown and described in my co-pending application, filed June 14, 1913, Serial No. 773,630.
It is the aim of the invention to provide a burner which/may be first employed to quickly heat the water and may then be so regulated as to maintain the heated condition of the water. t
Another aim of the invention is to provide a burner of the class mentioned which is simple in construction, economical in the consumption of fuel and adapte-d to be readily taken apart and cleaned.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a vert-ical transverse sectional View through the burner embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings, the casing of the Water heater, in connection with which the burner is employed, is indicated in general by the numeral 1, and is provided at its bottom with a series of attaching lugs 2 to which is secured one section of the burner in a manner to be presently explained. The water supply pipe for the heater is indicated by the numeral 3 and extends vertically and centrally anto the bottom of the casing 1.
The burner embodying the present invention includes an inner pilot section -t and an outer section 5. The pilot section comprises an annular tubular body 6 provided at its-upper side with an annular series of upwardly presented jets This section of the burner is provided axially with a sleeve 8 integrally connected therewith at intervals by relatively narrow connecting portions 9, a number of segmental slots or openings 10 being in this manner formed between the sleeve and the body of the section. This section of the burner is provided With a series of outwardly radially projecting lugs 11 which'serve a purpose to be presently pointed out. In mounting this section of the burner, the sleeve 8 is fitted onto the water supply pipe in the manner shown in Fig. 1 and a set screw 12 is fitted through the sleeve and is tightened to bear against the said supply pipe. The under side of the body 6 is formed with an opening 13 and a fuel supply pipe 111 is integral with the under side of the said body at this point and communicates with the said opening. The burner section 5 comprises an annular tubular body 15 having two concentrically arranged annular series of jets 16. The body 15 is formed in its under side with shallow recesses or seats 17, and in assembling this section with the pilot section, the body 15 is disposed to surround the -pilot section with the projecting ends of the lugs 11 upon the pilot section fitting in the seats 17, whereby to properly center the said sections. The body 15 is provided with outwardly radially projecting lugs 18 which are bolted or otherwise secured, as at 15), to the lugs 2 at the bottom of the casing 1. A fuel supply pipe 20 communicates with the interior of the body 15 through the under side thereof and is preferably located at a point adjacent the supply pipe 14. The valves, mixer and other necessary connections are provided for each of the pipes 14 and 20 so that the fuel may be supplied to the sections independently or simultaneously, as may be desired, and inasmuch as these connections constitute no part of the present invention, they have neither been shown nor described. Vithin the burner sections et and 5 respectively are located baffles 21 and 22, these baffles being located above the openings establishing communication between the bodies and the fuel supply pipes and, consequently, beneath the jets which are located directly above these openings. These baffles serve tc deflect the gaseous fuel as it enters the burner sections and thereby evenly distribute the fuel so that the jets of fiame will be of substantially uniform height.
From the foregoing description of .the invention, it will be seen that there is provided a burner which is particularly Well adapted for use in connection with a water heater of the instantaneous type, inasmuch as when it is desired to use the heater, both the burner sections may be employed to quickly heat the water and after the desired temperature is reached, the fuel supply may be cut off from the'burner section 5 leaving the ilot burner section 4 alone burning.
Hiving thus described the invention, what .is claimed as'new is:
1. In a burner of the class described, anv
annular pilot burner section, a sleeve located axially of the section andspaced therefrom, an annular burner section disposed to surround the pilot burner section and spaced therefrom, and anl independent Afuel supply pipeV forv each of` said sections.
2. In' va burner of Ithe class. described, an annularvpilot burner section, av sleeve located i axially of the section and spaced therefrom,
an annular burner section disposed to surround the pilot burner section and spaced therefrom, an. independent fuel supply pipe
