EMIL F. FLORCKEN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR OPERATING DOOR-BOLTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
llatont ml Mar. 30, 1915.
Application filed August 21, 1914. Serial N 0. 857.900.
To all 'w/z out it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL F. FLORCKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating Door-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door bolts and devices for operating the same, and one of the principalobjects of the invention is to provide reliable and ellicient means for operating two or more bolts simultaneously for fastening and unfast'ening a plurality of doors upon the inside of a bathroom or toilet.
In many modern houses, and more particularly in bungalows, the lavatory, bathroom or toilet is provided with two or more doors leading into the same from difierent sleeping apartments and from a hall connecting the apartments, and it is usually the custom for a person entering the lavatory or toilet to look all the doors leading into it behind him, but he generally unlocks only the door through which he passes out, giving rise to much annoyance.
It isthe principal purpose of this invention to provide means whereby the looking or unlocking of one of the doors will operate all the bolts for all the doors.
In the accompanying drawing :F igure 1 is a view in elevation of two doors and the floor under the doors and the door posts at one side of the doors being shown in section to illustrate the invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken through the bolt casings and through the floor and showing the mechanism for operating the two bolts simultaneously.
While only two bolts and mechanisms for operating the same are shown in the accompanying drawings, it will be readily understood that any number of bolts may be operated by the same mechanism when duplicated.
In the accompanying drawing, the numeral 1 designates a casing adapted to be placed in the door frame or post at a point convenient to the reach of the person. The casing 1 is provided with a sprocket wheel journaled in the front and rear sides of the case. and forum-d on or connected to the shaft of tlw sprocket wheel is a pinion 3 which engages the teeth 1 formed on a bolt 5. 'lhe bolt 5 is mounted in the opposite sides of the casing 1, and 6 is a hole in the door a to receive the end of the bolt. Upon the shaft 7 of the sprocket wheel and pinion is a knob or handle 8 disposed outside the door post 9 and inside the lavator or toilet but not on the outside so that the person inside the lavatorv or toilet can bolt or unbolt the doors. Extending around the sprocket wheel 2 is a sprocket chain 10 and connected to the lower ends of the sprocket chain 10 are belts 11 and 12. The belt 11 extends through a hole 13 in the floor l4 and passes around a pulley 15 journaled under the floor and said belt 11 extends across to another door and passes around a pulley 16 and leads up througlra hole 17 in the floor to a drive chain 18 and into a casing containing exactly the same mechanism referred to hereinbefore. The belt 12 is connected to the opposite end of the chain 10 and passes over a pulley 19 and crosses the belt 11 at 20 and extends around a pulley 21 and up to the opposite end of the chain 18 where it is connected in any suitable manner.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that any person entering the door a and operating the knob or handle 8 to lock the door a will also operate the bolt for the door I), and when the person passes out through the door and withdraws the bolt at that door, the bolt of the other door or doors is also withdrawn leaving all the doors unlocked.
Slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is 1. A bolt operating device comprising a plurality of casings, a sprocket wheel mounted in each casing, a pinion connected to the shaft of the sprocket wheel, hand operating devices for each of the shafts, a bolt mounted to slide in the casing and to engage the teeth of the pinion and connections between the sprocket wheels for simultaneous operation of a plurality of bolts.
2. A bolt operating device for a plurality of bolts comprising a casing for each device, a sliding bolt mounted in each ofsaid casings, a pinion connected to a sprocket wheel in said casings, means for operating said pinion and sprocket wheel simultaneously, said bolts each having a plurality of teeth thereon to be engaged by the pinion, chains passing over the sprocket Wheels, belts connected to said chains and extending over pulleys and crossing in the center so that each bolt when operated will operate the other in the same manner.
3. A bolt operating mechanism comprising a plurality of casing's'mounted in the door posts of a plurality of doors, s'aid casings each containing a sprocket wheel and' pinion, a hand operated device connected to the shaft of the sprocket wheel and pinion, a bolt mounted in each casing and provided with teeth to engage the teeth of the pinion, chains extendingover each of the sprocket wheels, and connections between said chains for simultaneously operating a plurality of bolts, when one of said bolts is operated.
4. A device for operating a plurality of bolts comprising a casing, a'sprocket wheel in said casing, a pinion connected to the sprocket wheel, a shaft on which the sprocket wheel and pinion are journaled, a hand-hold on the inside end of said shaft, a bolt provided with teeth to be engaged by the teeth of the pinion, and means for operating a plurality of said bolts simultaneously.
\ In testimony whereof I afiix my signa ture in presence of two Witnesses.
EMIL F. FLORCKEN.
