Description

Ill
CHARLES E. wRAY, OE RooHEsrER, NEW YO K, ASSIGNDR T0 NATIONAL BRAss MANUFACTURING 00., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
LUBRIGATOR-GUJP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs F. WRAY, of
Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin"Lubr1ca= tor-Cups; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-' scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawlngs, forming a part of this specification, and to the refer- I once-numerals marked thereon.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of lubricator cups, and con-- templates particularly the provision of a novel form of cover for the opening in the top of the cup, whereby to afiord a simple and comparatively cheap construction that will perform its several functions in an extremely efiicient manner.
To these and other ends the inv ention consists in certain improvements and combina tions of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of a device embodying a preferred arrangement, according to my improvement, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 4-4: of Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters throughoun the several views indicate the same parts.
In the structure herein shown, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, A designates the usual form of oil cup provided with the bottom B and the top C, said parts being connected and held in assembled relation by means of the central post D. The top of the cup is provided with an opening E which affords a means for filling the cup and also serves as a vent to admit air as the lubricating liquid is discharged.
It is desirable to provide a cover for the opening E of such form that it can be readily moved to expose the opening, and while serving ordinarily to prevent the admission of dust and dirt through said opening, will at the same time permit access of air thereto, and to this end I employ a cover embodying a central portion F which is fixedly Specification of Letters Patent.
of a pin G, the latter having a head If manner shown in Fig. 3.
In order to afford a passage for air to the.
opening E' when the cover is in closed position, there is provided an upwardly flaring portion I which extends from a point above the opening E to the edge of the cover, providing a passage J which is quite large enough to provide the necessary air vent, and at the same time is so disposed with relation to the opening and cover as to successfully prevent dirt particles from settling through the opening E, and such dust or dirt as might work in through the passage J while the cover is closed, would be in such small quantity as to be negligible.
The pin Gr is pivotally mounted in the top C so as to turn readily, and may be keyed to the cover F in any suitable manner, as for instance, by being provided with one or more fiat faces, the cover having an opening corresponding to engage said faces. In order to hold the cover normally above the opening E, the pin G is provided with a spring K which surrounds it, having one end attached thereto, as by a bent portion L which engages the locking pin M, while the opposite end of the spring abuts against the central post D. The flaring portion I also serves as a finger piece for moving the cover, and when it is engaged and pushed downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 2, the cover is moved against the tension of the spring K, which acts to return it to its normal position when released.
The invention which I have described presents an extremely unique arrangement for accomplishing the purposes contemplated, .and the construction is a simple one which can be manufactured at low cost, at the same time permitting ready assemblage of the parts.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a lubricator cup, the combination with a top having an opening therein, of a cover for the opening pivotally mounted on the top, the cover embodying an upwardly flaring portion extending from a point above the opening to one edge and forming a passage affording access of air to the interior of the cup.

2. In a lubricator cup, the combination With a top having an opening therein, of a cover for the opening'fiXed upon a pivotally mounted support, the cover embodying an upwardly flaring portion extending from a point above the opening to one edge and forming a passage affording access of air to the interior of the cup, and a spring cooperating with the support to hold the cover normally above the opening.
3. In a lu-bricator cup, the combination With a top and bottom, the top having an opening therein, of a centrally disposed post connecting the top and bottom, a pin pivotally mounted in the top and extending below the same, a cover for said opening fixed upon the pin, said cover embodying an upwardly flaring portion extending from a point above the opening to one edge and forming a passage afiording access of air to the interior of the cup, and a spring surrounding said pin having one end connected thereto and its opposite end engaging the aforementioned post.
4. In a lubricator cup, the combination with a top having an opening therein, of a cover for the opening embodying an upwardly flaring portion extending from a point above the opening to one edge and forming apassage affording access of air to the interior of the cup.
