CHARPES H MoGEE, OF YOR'ILAND, MAIITE, ASSTGITOR 'lO CHAMPION METAL WEATHER AITI D FARTING HEAD COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSsACHUSETTS, A CORPORA- METALLIC SCREEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
To all whom it may concern: r r
Be it known that I, QnAnLns McGnn, a citizen of the United States and resident of Portland, in the county 0. Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Screens, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a window and other screen comprising a sheet metal frame, a sheet of screen material such as woven wire, and metallic means for securing the ed es of the sheet to the frame.
he invention has for its object to enable the screen material to be quickly, conven iently and securely applied-to the frame and to be removed with equal facility when it is desirable to renew thesereen material.
The invention consists in the improve ments which I shall now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompan' ing drawings forming a part of the speci cation, Figure 1 represcnts a side elevation of a portion of a metallic screen embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents a transverse section of one of the members of the metallic frame and of one of the metallic confining strips, said parts being separated; Fig. 4: represents a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating the manner of separating a confining strip from a frame member; Fig. 5 represents a View similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification. Fig. 6 represents a cross-sectional view of a confining strip embodying amodifioation.
The same reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all of the views.
. The frame of my improved screen comprises sheet metal members preferably mitered at their ends and united by brazing or otherwise to form a continuous frame, the corners of the frame being preferably reinforced by-angle pieces 6, as shown in U. S. Patent 917,106, granted to me April 6, 1909.
Each member of the frame is composed of a strip of sheet metal bent to form a relatively wide inner wall 12, a relatively narrow outer wall 13, an dge wall 14 connecting the walls 12 and 13, a clamping flange 15 forming a continuation of the inner wall 12 and a locking flange 16 forming a continuation of the outer wall 13. As shown by the drawings, the flanges 15 and 16 project in opposite directions, said flanges forming the sides of a threat 17 (Fig. 3) extending lengthwise of the frame member.
The sheet 18 of screen material has its edges bent inwardly over the clamping flanges 15, as shown by Fig. 2. These in wardly bent edges are secured by a series of confining strips, each having a clamping face 19 adapted to cooperate with the clamping flange 15 in securing the inwardly bent screen material and a locking face 20 adapted to cooperate with the lockin flange 16 in locking the confining strip an the frame, the locking face 20 being provided with a shoulder 21 adapted to engage the inner edge of the locking flange 16, as shown by Fig. 2. Each confining strip is preferably made from a sheet metal blank bent to give the strip a U-shapc in cross section, one of the flanges of the U-shaped strip forming the clamping face 19, while the other flange forms the locking face 20, the two flanges being united by a neck 22 which is preferably rounded as shown.
When the edges of the screen material are bent over the clamping flanges 15 the confining strips are forced into the throat 17 from the position shown by Fig. 3 to that shown by Fig. 2, the clamping face 19 of each strip being thus caused to cooperate with a clamp ing flange 15, while the locking face is caused to cooperate with the locking flange 16. I When the parts are thus assembled they can be separated only by tipping the confining strips outwardly by means of a knife blade 2 1 or other like instrument inserted in the crevice between the locking flange 16 and the locking face 20, as indicated by Fig. 2. The clamping face l9..is extended sufficiently to enable its inner edge to be supported Within the frame either by direct contact with the inner side portion of the frame or with theinterposed screen material, as indicated by Fig. 2. When the prying instrument 24 is moved from the position shown by Fig. 2 to that shown by Fig. 4 the confining strip is tipped to. disengage its shoulder 21 from the edge of the locking flange 16, as clearly indicated by Fig. 4, so that the confining strip is free to be removed from the frame.
The frame flanges 15 and 16 are made of relatively thin resilient sheet metal and are adapted to yield to permitthe disengagement of the locking shoulder. from the looking flange, the said flanges being capable of springing away from each other to increase the width of, or expand the throat 17. The confining strip is not necessarily resilient O1 compressible and when formed as shown by Figs. 2, 3 and a is preferably made of relatively thicl: sheet metal so that it is practically rigid or incompressible. -Fig. 5 shows a confining strip composed of a rigid solid bar having a clamping face 19 and a locking face 20* provided with a locking shoulder 21. The practically rigid confining strip when in place supports the resilient locking flange 10 and prevents the side portion 13 from being bent, or sprung inwardly.
The frame clamping and locking faces of the confining strip are preferably inclined, as shown by the drawings, this inclination imparting suitable stiffness to the clamping flanges l5 andfacilitating the operation of tipping the confining strips outwardly, the inclined face 19 being caused by its inclination to project considerably outward from the edge of the clamping flange 15, so that it is freely tipped across said edge as indicated by Fig. 4. A packing of cement may be inserted between the faces of the confining strip and the flanges 15 and 16, to exclude water from the interior of the frame.
The confining strip shown by Fig. 6 differs from that shown by Figs. 2, 3 and 4 in that the edge 19 is bent to present a curved surflanges l5 and 16 and the face instead of a sharp edge, the purpose in forming the bend being to facilitate the slipping movement and avoid injuring the screen material when inserting the confining v strip into the throat 17.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A screen comprising a frame composed of sheet metal members, each bent to form an inner wall, an outer wall, and an edge wall connecting the inner and outer walls, a resilient clamping flange projecting from the inner side wall and a resilient locking flange projecting from the outer side wall, said flanges projecting in opposite directions and forming the sides of a longitudinal throat, a sheet of screen material bent at its edges over the said clamping flanges and confining strips formed to enter said throats and having clamping faces cooperating with the clamping flanges in securing the screen material and locking faces having shoulders adapted to engage the locking flanges to lock the confining strips to the frame, the frame flanges and the faces of the confining strips being inclined, and the said clamping faces being adapted to be tipped outwardly to dis; engage their shoulders from the locking flanges.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses,
CHARLES H. MCGE Witnesses:
C. F. Bnown, J. MURPHY.
