Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 16, 1915.
Application filed June 11, 1914. serial No. 844,496.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGARET S. YEAGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honey Grove, in the county of Fannin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Retainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to necktie retainers, and one of the principal objects of the in vention is to provide a device of simple construction to be slipped into turndown collars and to retain a necktie or scarf against pulling down or moving sidewise, said retainer also providing means whereby the ordinary four-in-hand scarf will slip readily between the two layers of the turn down collar in tying the knot.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a retainer for scarfs and neckties which shall be made of a thin film of celluloid or other similar smooth material which can be sufficiently thin to not be cumbersome in use, said retainer comprising two layers closed at their lower edges and open at their upper edges, this retainer being placed between the two layers of the collar with the opening upward so that a scarf or tie placed therein will slip readily and that when the knot is tied in the scarf, it will not pull downward to disclose the collar button at the front of the shirt and collar.
The above and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illus trated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a necktie retainer made in accordance with this invention and disconnected from the collar, Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken through a collar and through the retainer at the back collar button, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a modified form.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety, a necktie retainer made in accordance with this invention. The retainer is made preferably of thin celluloid or of other sheet material having a smooth or glossy surface which will permit the tie to slip freely through the same in tying the knot in the front thereof, said retainer comprising two layers a and 6, open at the top and formed of a single sheet bent or folded on the line 0, and the two layers a and 6 being slightly spaced apart sufiiciently so that a scarf or tie will move readily between the two layers. At the front two button hole tabs (Z are provided and these are intended to button onto the front collar button through the button holes 6.. At the back upon the layer 1) at a central point is formed a button hole f which is adapted to engage the back collar button 9.
In use the necktie or scarf is placed in between the two layers a and b of the retainer and then the retainer and scarf are placed within a turn-down collar h and connected to the collar buttons as will be understood. The tie or scarf extending between the two layers a and b of the retainer cannot readily pull down owing the the fact that the re tainer is folded on the line 0, and the two edges 91 of the retainer prevent the tie or scarf from moving sidewise.
As shown in Fig. 3, the member a is similar to that already described, but member I) is provided with an inwardly bent portion 0, thus providing a space 0? for the neckband of a scarf, and serving to prevent the.
neckband from slipping either up or down.
It will be obvious that the retainer may be made of various kinds of material which will serve the same purpose as celluloid, and hence I do not wish to be limited as to the kind of-material which may be used.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is 1-- The herein described retainer for neckwear composed of a single piece of celluloid having smooth surfaces upon both sides to permit a scarf or tie to slip readily through the same in tying the knot in the scarf or tie, said retainer being bent upon itself to provide two members spaced apart sufliciently to permit a tie between them and In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 1n presence of two wltnesses.
MARGARET SANDERS YEAGER.
said retainer adapted to be inserted in a turndown collar With the free edges of the retainer upward, and said retainer being provided With button hole tabs at the bottom and in front, and the inner member being provided With a button hole at the back to receive the back collar button.
WVitnesses C. M. YEAGER, R. M. MOCLEARY.
