Description

LEWIS- WHITEHEAD, SR., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 113,231, dated March 28, 1871.
IMPRQVEMENT IN FOLDING-BEDS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
To all 'whom fit and/y cmwem;
Be it known that 1,LEWIs WHlTnHEAD, Sr., of Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and Stateof New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding-Beds; and I do hereby declare the follow- .ing to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the isame, and in w,hicl1 vas to beof sucient stiffness or rigidity to form a base or resting-surface of itself when in use, so that it can be used with or without the bedstead, and constructed in such a manner as to permit of being folded, so that the parts of which it is composed shall rest lush with' .each other when brought together, without straining either the spiral springs or the stung out of shape;
. and of-pivoted, slotted,'and recessed braces, in combination with projections or lugs, the plates to which the latter are fastened, and by means of which they are attached to the rigid portion of the bed, being bent at right angles, and provided with projections or bolts which enter apertures out in the bed; and the right-angular portions of the plates, to which are fastened or otherwise secured the pivotsof the slotted braces, substantially as hereinafter shown and dcscribed. ,Y
f To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
ln the annexed drawing- A A refer to, the bed, which is composed of two or more parts or frames, constructed of wood or other suitablefmaterial,'with Spiral springs attached thereto and secured in the lusual manner, andstued or upholstered with suitable material, the aforesaid parts being connectedtogether at the top or surface in such a manner as to form a hinge therefor, whereby they may be folded together' so as to permit of the lower surface of the upper one resting Hush with the upper surface of the lower oneiof the said parts, as
shown in g. 3, thereby preventing eitherthe spiral springs or the standing from being strained and forced out of their natural'position and shapewhen the parts are folded ltogether, an advantage onlyY obtained by such hingiug of the parts, as above stated.
B B' refer to metal braces, which are pivoted to v pivots formed upon or otherwise secured to the plates C O, fastened with one portion of theirs'urfaces to the sides, and the other or right-angular' portions to the rear or. inner end of the part A of the bed, by any' -suitable. means, as seen in figs. 1 and 2.'
The braces B B are supplied with longitudinal slots b l, which terminate into recesses`or depressions b'v b.
G'G refer to plates, one portion of ywhich is secured to 'the sides, and the other` or right-angular portions thereof to the rear or inner end of 'the part A of the bed.
These plates are providedV with projections c c,
which are formed with heads, and pass through the.
slots b b of braces; B B, and supplied on their rightangular port-ions with apertures c1 c1, which communi.
cate with holes in the part A of the bed, and receive, when the parts AA of the bed are extended, as seen in iig. 1, pins or projections c2 c, formed upon or other'wise secured to the right-angular portions of the plates O O, fastened to A; and hold the said arts, with the projections c2 c2 firmly in position wh ,n-the same occupy the position above stated, and the headed projections ce are pushed'into the recesses b b of the slots b b rnade in the braces B'B.
When the two parts A A of the bed are io be folded, all `that is necessary to accomplish this is to merely lift the lfree ends of the pivoted slotted braces B B until the headed projections c c are Withdrawn from the recesss b' b', at which time they will be allowed to move of their own accord, and the bed alone grasped and brought together, folding the two parts thereof together.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The slotted and recessed braces B B, pivoted to the part A, in combination with the headed projec-V tions c c, .fastened to the part. A of a bed, substantially as and for` the purpose set forth.v
'2. The lplates C C', constructed as described, and
supplied with the projections c? c2, and apertures cl c,
witnesses. LEWIS WHI'IEHEA'D, SR.
