NOISELESS STAMPING-PAD.

l 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. BUCKIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Noiseless Stamping-Pacls, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a stamping pad and seeks to provide an improved construction for receiving and absorbing the blows of rubber stamps and the like and thereby obviating the noise incident to the use of such stamps.

The main body a of the fiat pad is formed of glutinous material, and preferably consists of an admixture of glue and glucose, or of glue, glycerin and glucose. Preferably also, small amounts of borax, cotton-seed or castor-oil and formaldehyde are added. The proportions by weight of the materials are substantially as follows, viz: glue, twelve parts; glycerin, nine parts; glucose, nine parts; borax, one part; cottonseed or castor-oil, one-half part; and formaldehyde one-sixth part. These ingredients are melted, admixed and then run into a mold to form the fiat body a of the pad which may be of any suitable size and shape and which is preferably an inch or more thick. The pad is provided with a suitable surface covering Z) of flexible, and preferably impervious or semi-impervious material, such as oil-cloth, leather or the like, which is stretched smoothly over the surface of the pad and secured thereto by the adhesive qualities of the material of which the body of the pad is formed.
At one portion of its surface, the stamping pad, in its preferred form, is provided with a recessed inking-pad. That shown, comprises alternate layers 0 and (Z of absorbent felt and blotting paper, the whole having a covering 6 of muslin. The inking pad is preferably removably arranged in a recess f in the surface of the stamping pad near one edge thereof.

ing or frame, consisting, of a metal strip or band 9 extending about the edges of the pad and having its ends connected, for example, by means of a screw-bolt i2, extending through perforated ears 2' on the ends of the band. The body of the pad extends above and below the edges of the band or frame so that the latter will not contact with the surface of the desk or table upon which the pad is placed.

The covering also acts to protect the body of the pad and prevents its surface from being marred or broken and, since the covering is impervious to the viscous ingredients of the body portion of the pad, it prevents its surface from becoming sticky. The covering 7) can be applied by lining the mold in which the body a of the pad is formed, so that the covering adheres to one side' and to the edges of the pad. The covering is then applied to the other side of the pad before the body thereof is entirely cooled and set;
I claim as my invention 1. A stamping pad adapted to be placed upon the surface of a desk, table or the like and comprising a flat, flexible, molded body of glutinous material, a flexible protective covering impervious to the sticky ingredients of the pad extending over and cemented to the side faces and edges thereof, and an inclosing frame formed of a thin metal strip extending around the edges of Copies of this patent may be obtained for the pad, the soft, glutinous body of the pad 7 being thicker than the Width of said frame to prevent contact of said frame with the desk, table or the like whereon the pad is placed, substantially as described.
