FITTING-BAND FOR HATS, 850.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed August 26, 1918. Serial No. 251,507.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY D. Cnn'rrs, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Red Bank, county of Monmouth, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fitting-Bands for Hats, &c., of which the following is a full and clear specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive size-reducing and fitting-band for hats, caps, etc., as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a hat showing my improved band in position therein;
Fig. 2 is a perspective sectional view of a part of the band; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the band, enlarged. L
This invention has reference to that class of fitted bands which consists of a piece of substantially flat material bent so as to lie between the usual sweat-band and the hatbody, to assist in fitting the hat to the particular cranium shape of the wearer. My improved band consists of a central body band 1 formed of a suitable flexible, porous, fibrous material, such as felt-paper, coated with a water-proof adhesive substance 2, for example, rubber cement. Around this coated band is placed an envelop of cushioning material 3, such as absorbent felt-paper, this covering being applied while the rubbercement or other adhesive is soft, so that when the cement hardens or dries, this covering will be securely and permanently aflixed to the central band throughout its superficial area.
By making the central body portion 1 of the band of a soft flexible material and impregnating and coatin it with a waterproof substance, it will e observed that this central body portion will be proof against being rotted by sweat and, besides will be prevented from becoming soggy by the absorption of moisture.
flexibility and freshness for a maximum period of time. The employment of a porous copies of this patent may be obtained for live cents each, by addressing the his central body a portion, therefore, will retain its shape and material, such as felt-paper, for this inner body member and the use of a water-proof cement prevents the cementitious materials from peeling or rubbing off, since this material and the band virtually become homogeneous; and, when a cement of rubber be employed, the elasticity of the band is virtually increased.
The outer covering 3, by being applied to the central body before the cementitious material has hardened, is very securely attached to said central body portion in a very simple and inexpensive manner, rendering it unnecessary to staple or stitch the coveringmember to the central body portion. The outer side of the covering is preferably made of soft fibrous material, such as felt-paper, to thereby render the device as comfortable as possible to the wearer. This covering material is absorbent, as is well known, so that any moisture that works through the sweat-band of the hat will be taken up by this absorbing covering and thus prevented from soalcinp; into the body of the hat. The absorption of any moisture by this outer covering will not be seriously disadvantageous, as the moisture will evaporate before the absorbent material is rotted, but it is important that the central body or core be proof against the absorption of moisture, as stated, so that this cenral body portion will be kept in prime condition for a maximum length of time.
The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having been specifically described, what is claimed as new is:
A fitting band for hats, etc., comprising an inner member of soft flexible felt paper coated all around with a water-proof adhesive substance, and an outer member entirely covering the inner member on both sides and both edges and attached to said inner member through the medium of said water-proof adhesive, this outer member consisting of a soft paper cushioning material.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature.
HARRY D. CURTIS.
