TYPE-SHIFTING ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 30, 1913. Serial No. 781,957.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR LOPEZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Type-Shifting Attachments for Type-WVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved type-shifting attachment for .typewriting machines, and more especially for the Ham- 'mond typewriting machine, by which the shuttle and anvil carrying the same can be lifted from the normal position for printing lower-case letters to an intermediate position and an upper position for printing respectively, upper-case letters and figures, punctuation marks and other characters. For this purpose, onecapital shift-key and -one figure shift-key are arranged at one side,
and a second capital shift-key is arranged at the other side of the keyboard of the machine, whereby the shifting from lower-case to upper-case type is conveniently accomplished, the key-levers for the shift-keys being all connected with one transverserockshaft from which the motion is transmitted to the anvil-shaft and anvil of the machine. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan-view ofv a typewrltlng machine of the Hammond type, showing the connection of the shift-keys for upper-case letters and figures with an intermediate anvil-operating rock-shaft, Fig.'2'is a detall side-elevation, partly in section on l ne 2, 2, Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4: are deta1ls of the locking mechanism for the shift-keys.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding =parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawin s, a represents the usual type keys, a a shi t-key for uppercase letters, and a the shift-key for figures, punctuation marks, etc.- A shift-key for capital letters is arranged at each s de of the keyboard, one a in proxinrnty to the figure shift-key and the other capital shift-key a at the opposite side of the keyboard, so that the operator can use'either capital shift-key. as found most convenient in printing. The shift-keys areapplied totkey-levers b b 6 respectively, which are applied to the opposite ends of a rock-shaft s that'extends supported in suitable bearings s on the bedplate a of the machine. Alongside of the levers of the shift-keys are fixed on the rock-shaft s, the hubs of dogs d, al which extend under the key-levers, dog J extending beneath levers b b and dog 03 extending beneath the lever 6 A spring k beneath the lever 6 and a spring .h beneath the lever lifts the capital shift-keys from depressed to raised position.
From a point on the rock-shaft s, midway between its ends, extends a lever c on the rear-end of which the anvil-shaft is supported, so that by depressing either one of the shift-keys, the shaft and anvil, together with the shuttles on the same, are raised for the required extent so as to bring either one of the type-lines of letters of the upper case, figures or punctuation marks up to a level with the .printing point of the machine. The key-lever b .of the left-hand capital shift-key is provided with an adjustable stop 9 vertically below the same, by which the extent of lifting of the anvil and the shuttle is accurately controlled. A similarstop g limits downward-movement of the figure shift-key. The lever b of the capital shiftkey a at theright-hand side of the keyboard is guided in a slot in the cross guidebar f for the key-levers, the lower edge of the slot acting in the-nature of a stop for the same.
The key-lever bl is provided with a locking-device, which consists of upwardly-extending arm 6 pivoted to the lever and provided with a knob at its upper end. The arm has-a hook e that enters into a slot 6 of the key-leverguide-barf of the machine and retains the key+levers depressed. The key-lever b is provided with alikelocking mechanism comprising an arm 7, having a hook 5% at a higher elevation than hook e and adapted to enter a slot in the bar 7 for retaining the lever 12 depressed to a lower point than the bar 6 When it is desired to print upper-case letters exclusively, the capital shift-key lever is locked in position andthe anvil is thus held in position so that the typein the intermediate row of the shuttle is printed. vided with a locking device, as the same is employed as an auxiliary convenience in printing, so as to quickly permit the print:

By arranging all the key-levers of the shift-keys in connection with one rock-shaft, one anvil-operating arm only is required and the separate connection of the shift-keys dispensed with. All the shifting operations are accomplished by the connection of the key-levers of the shift-keys with the transverse rock-shaft s referred to, so that the shifting from lower case to upper case and to figures and punctuation marks is facilitated and accomplished by a simplified and effective mechanism, v
I claim:
1. A shift-key attachment for typewriting machines, comprising a capital shift-key and a figure shift-key at one side of the keyboard, and an auxiliary capital shift-key at the other side of the keyboard, key-levers for said shift-keys having circular hubs, a transverse rock-shaft to which the key-levers are loosely applied, two dogs fixed on said rock-shaft and extending one below one of said capital key-levers and the figure-lever, and the other under the other capital key-lever, each dog comprising a circular collar and a radially projecting lug extend ing exposed in the path of the key-lever radially beyond-the hub of the same, independent lifting-springs one under each of the capital key-levers, and a rearwardlyextending arm fixed on said rock-shaft and engaging the lower end of the anvil-shaft of the machine.
2. In a typewritingmachine, the combination, with a vertically-shiftable anvil provided with one or more type-shuttles, and its shaft, of two capital shift-keys arranged one at each side of the keyboard, a figure shift-key arranged at one side of the keyboard adjacent to the capital shift-key on that side, key-levers for said shift-keys, said key-levers having circular hubs, independent lifting springs for the capital keylevers, a rock-shaft to which all said keylevers are loosely applied, fixed dogs on said rock-shaft, one of said dogs extending beneath one of said capital key-levers and the other dog extending beneath the other capital key-lever and the figure key-lever, each dog comprising a circular collar and a radlally projecting lug extending exposed in the path of the key-lever radially beyond the hub of the latter, a rearwardly-extending center-arm fixed on the rock-shaft and engaging the lower end of the anvil-shaft, and means for locking. the capital and figure shift-keysat one side of the keyboard in lowered position.
3. A shift-key attachment for typewriting machines, comprising a capital shift-key and a figure shift-key at one side of the keykey-levers, a rearwardly-extending arm fixed on said rock-shaft and engaging the lower end of the anvil-shaft of the machine, and means for limiting downward movement of one of said capital key-levers' 4. 5. A shift-key attachment for typewriting machines, comprising a capital shiftkey and a figure shift-key at one side of the keyboard, and an auxiliary capital shift-key at the other side of the keyboard, key-levers for said shift-keys having circular hubs, a transverse rock-shaft to which the keylevers are loosely applied, two dogs fixed on said rock-shaft and extending one below one of said capital key-levers and the figurelever, and the other under the other capital key-lever, each dog comprising a circular collar and a radially projecting, lug extending exposed in the path of ,the key-lever radially beyond the hub of the latter, independent lifting-springs one under each of the capital key-levers, a rearwardly-extendkey and a figure shift-key at one side of the keyboard, and an auxiliary capital shift-key at the other side of the keyboard, key-levers for said shift-keys having circular hubs, a transverse rock-shaft to which the keylevers are loosely applied, two dogs fixed on said rock-shaft and extending one below one of said capital key-levers and the figurelever, and the other under the other capital key-lever, each dog comprising a circu lar collar and a radially projecting lug extending exposed in the path of the key-lever radially beyond the hub of the latter, independent lit'ting-springs one under each of the capital key-levers, a rearwardly-extending arm fixed on said rock-shaft and engaging the lower end of the anvil-shaft of the machine, means for limiting downward movement of'one of said capital key-levers, and adjustable means for limiting downward movement of the figure key-lever.
7. A shift-key attachment for typewriting machines, comprising a capital shift-key and a. figure shift-key at one side of the key-board, and an auxiliary capital shiftkey at the other side of the keyboard, keylevers for said shift-keys having circular hubs, a transverse rock-shaft to which the key-levers are loosely applied, two dogs fixed on said rock-shaft and extending one below one of Said capital key-levers and the figure-lever, and the other under the other capital key-lever, each dog comprising a circular collar and a radially projecting lug extending exposed in the path of the keyleverradially beyond the hub of the latter, independentlifting-springs one under each of the capital key-levers, a rearwardly-extending arm fixed on said rock-shaft and engaging the lower end of the anvil-shaft of the machine, and means for locking one of said capital shift-keys in anvil-raised position.
8. A shift-key attachment for typewriting machines, comprising a capital shift-key and a figure shift-key at one side of the keyboard, and an auxiliary capital shift-key at the other side of the keyboard, key-levers for said shift-keys having circular hubs, a transverse rock-shaft to which the key-levers are loosely applied,-tw0 dogs fixed on said rock-shaft and extending one below one of said capital key-levers and the figure-lever, and the other under the other capital keylever, each dog comprising a circular collar and a radially projecting lug extending exposed in the path of the key-lever radially beyond the hub of the latter, independent lifting-springs one under each of the capital key-levers, a rearwardly-extending arm fixed on said rock-shaft and engaging the lower end of the anvil-shaft or" the machine, means for locking one of said capital shiftkeys in anvilraised position, and means independent of said last-named means for locking the figure key-lever in anvil-raised position.
