TYPE-Winternet MACHINE.
Application led Augustin, 1910. Serial No. 577,957.
0 all whom t may concern:
' Be it known that I, WALTER J BARRoN, citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the. county of Kings and State of New York, have'inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in TypeVVi'iting May chines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to indicating mechanisin and type bar repulser mechanism for typewriting machines.
VOne object of my-inventioii is to provide Y" improved indicating devices for indicatingv the printing-point on the platen, said devices being simple in character and .near the printing point so that a close adJustment may be obtained of any desired point on ther work sheet to the printing point.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved repulser devices for coperating with the type bars when actuated to facilitate their return from printing to nori ticularly pointed out in the claims.
` 'My invention is shown as applied to a No.
10v Remington typewriting machine but the nature of said invention is such that it may readily be adapted to other styles of writing machines.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat-l ing one form of my invention, Figure 1 is a "fragmentary vertical front to rear sec' tional view of a No. 10 Remington machine embodying my invention, parts of said ma- Y chine being omitted and parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view of some of the parts shown in Fig. 1 but showing one of the type bars in printing position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of some of the parts shown 0 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front view on an enlarged scale showing the relationship between the indicating device and the printing point in the shifted position of the platen.
As shown in Fig. 1 the main frame of the lift the shift frame and elevate'- l frame and platen to receive imprints from machine comprises ay base portion l from which rise posts 2 supporting atop plate 3. Key levers 4 are fulcrumed on a lplate 5, each key lever being connected by a link v(i, lever? and second link 8 to a type bar 9.
The type bars are pivoted at 10 to hangers secured to a stationary support 11. The free ends of the type bars normally rest on a stationary support 12. Each typefb'ar carries a type block 13 which is provided with two types 14 and 15, the former being a small and 'the latter a capitallettcr.'` Betweenvthe types on each type blockw is a depression or space 16, the bottom of which is the face of the block proper.
Nhen the type bars are actuated the types are adapted to cooperate with the front face of a rolleil platen17 pivotally'supported on a-platen frame comprisingend .bars 18 andiA a cross bar 19, said frame being connected by links or devices 2O to a carriageor truckl comprising end bars 21 and front and" rear bars 22. The bars 22 are oppositely grooved to receive anti-friction balls 23 whichy also cooperate with fixed guide rails 24. The truck and platen framev compose a carriage for the platen, which carriage is impelled leftward by the usual spring drum', (not shown), the leftward or printi'ng move' ments being controlled by -escapement devices of the usual or any suitable pattern' which are connected by a link 25 with an arm 2G fixed to a rock shaft 27 mounted inthe base 1. vFixed to said rock shaft near its ends are arms 28 from which depend 'Patented apr. 23, 1912.
arms 28a, said arniscarryinga universal bar 29 which underlies the key levers 4 and frame which further includes -upright side* bars or rods 32 and afrectangular Across-bar 33 from which dextend downward arms 34.V
Iivoted at 35 toeach arm 34 is ashift'lever 36 fulcrumed at 37 and provided with-a shift' key, 38 operative whenA deptixfesseldy to e p ateny 'by Ine herein.. 'Thejcoinbined indicating dey vice andwrepulser "wherein -rny invention V more especiallyiresides is'inade vpreferably o'sp'ring wire andasshown clearly in Figs. y
and 3 oinprisesf'an upright portion 44e having an angula'rly disposed inwardly bent portin'k tatthe upper end, the lower end of thefiipright portion/14 terminating a loopet. The 'loop 46 receives a headed screw t7 ywhich 'engages a tapped hole in the meinberel at the'top 4of the right-hand arm 42and detachably secures the indicating device toits support.4 -The arnol orporton 44e extends upward transversely of the printVr ing linel (represented in Fig. 2 by the letters Z, n) is offset or bent rearward abovefthe screw/4( sol as to lieclcse to the face ofthe card/guide, but, the portion t5 is clear otV the cardguide, so that nothing is interposed betwieen lo and the platen save the pjapei. The portion 45 extends lengthwise of theiplaten and' of the printing line and above said printing line, terminato ing over the printing'point but, in line therewith. V"In other Words, the inner or left-handfend, 'or edge of the part 45 is di? rectly over 'theaniddle of the small letter n,
which asshown is overlying the printing point so that a line transverse ot the printing line and at right angles 'thereto and passing through the printing point' will also containthe end or edge of the portion fio. Suc-hpa line is the broken line in yFig. I, designated by the reference immoral 48. The lotteria in Fig. 8 is in the line above the printing line. It will ho observed that the pointer isclosc to and iu thc same vertical vline as .the printing point, so thatany desired portion of the work sheet'nlay be readily'brought to thc printing point be causent the facility with which the. printing point may bellocatcd. by means ot' the pointer. lt will further be observed that the pointer or indicating device is on a relatively stationary part ofthe machine which docs not move during printing operations; Fu rthcrinore,` thc pointer" is on a support which shi.. i with .the platen so that the pointerv always;hears the saiuc'nornial rc latfionshil'i with the plat'en in uppercase as well'fas iii-lowercase. This will be under- .stood'niore especially "from Fig. "/t which .force'it toward thepplaten to shifted position with the capital letter N overlying the printing point. v The indicating device or finger is preferably made of spring metal as above stated and the horizontal portion.K L tnormally stands slightly away from the printing face of the platen as shown in Fig. l. This portion is so located that when a type bar is actuated the types 14 and 15 thereon will pass at opposite sides above and below the portion 45 which will engage the space or opening lt' between and separating said types, J ust prior to the printingmoment the tace ol the type block 13 between the types will engage the portion 45 and will shown in Fig. f2,l thereby flexing somewhat the inner or r'ree portion of the ar'in 45, the opposite end 'of which will be forcibly' pressed against the card guide; Consequently when the actuated key lever is released' the spring in the arm or portion l5 ot' the indicating device serves to assist the key lever spring 4f) in restoring the type bar to normal position, the type bar receiv ing its initial in'ipulse away from the platen fronithe indicating device which thus serves as a rcpulser. y
lt will be observed that the repulser cooperates with thetype bar at the farthest practicable point from 4the pivot thereof, which is the most eliiective point for coperation. In other words, a slight impulse communicated to the outer cud of the type bar will be more effective than a considerthe position ably greater impulse communicated near. i
the type bar pifvot would be.
it will be noted further that the detachable spring finger herein described is siniple and inexpensive in construction. may be applied without altering the machine in any respect, and provides an effective pointer or indicator for the printing point ou thc platen and also an ellectlve repulscr for tho typo bars, ynfcventing blurring and promoting the speed or' the typebars at the start ol their return movon'lents.
Various changes may be' made without departing -from the scope of my invention.
