SAND-BAND.
Application filed January 25, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Auburn, in the county of King and State of-lVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sand-Bands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sand bands for the purpose of excluding sand and gritty material from the joint between the wheel hub of a wagon and the skein upon which it is mounted.
The invention has for its object to provide a device of this class of simple and efiicient construction which may be readily applied or removed without necessitating the removal of the wheel and in which the component parts shall be securely connected together by means including the fastening means, whereby the device is clamped upon the vehicle axle.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing the improved device applied in position for operation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the device detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The improved protecting device comprises in its construction a saddle A made preferably of hard wood in the form of a bow or yoke of suitable dimensions to straddle the axle in connection with which the device is to be used. The limbs or side members 1 of the saddle A are slightly divergent and said limbs are provided with perforations 2 extending vertically therethrough, the lower ends of said perforations terminating adjacent to the inner edges of the Specification of Letters Patent.

lower ends of said side members, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing, said perforations being for the passage of the limbs or side members 3 of a yoke B, the crown l of which extends above the saddle member A. Suitably secured upon the latter by means of screws or other fastening members 5 is a guard plate 6 of leather or other suitable material, the same being curved to correspond to the shape of the saddle, and said guard member being made of suitable length to extend over the hub of the vehicle to which the device is applied. The limbs 3 of the yoke B extend through a clip plate 7 which is secured thereupon by means of nuts 8.
In assembling the parts of the device the guard member 6 is secured upon the saddle A, said guard member being provided with apertures 9 for the passage of the limbs 3 of the yoke B, the crown 4 of said yoke extending across the guard member, as will be best seen in Fig. 3. The screws or fastening members 5 are inserted into the saddle member through the guard member at either side of the limbs of the yoke, thus forming an exceptionally strong and rigid device of extremely simple construction.
The device may be applied to a vehicle axle, shown at 10, by placing the saddle A astride the axle and then applying the clip plate 7 and nuts 8 to the limbs of the yoke which extends downwardly below the axle, as shown, thus securely fastening the device, the guard member 6 of which is of such length as to overlap the wheel hub 11, and thus preventing sand and grit from entering the axle box.
The improved device, as will be seen, is extremely simple in construction and may be readily applied without removing the wheel; the latter, on the other hand, is capable of being readily removed without interfering with the protecting device.
Should the guard plate 6 become worn or dilapidated it may be readily replaced by a new one cut from a piece of leather or other sheet material, said guard plate being readily detachable by removing the screws 5 and the yoke 13. When the yoke is replaced, a portion of the guard plate will be clamped and held securely between said yoke and the bow or saddle A, the screws 5 serving to secure the corners of the guard plate on the saddle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A device of the class described comprising an axle engaging bow or saddle having vertically apertured side members, a yoke having limbs extending therethrough, and a guard plate clamped between the yoke and the saddle.
2. A device of the class described comprising an axle engaging saddle having perforated side members, a yoke having limbs extending through said side members, a clip plate and nuts on said limbs, a guard plate saddle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
