Description

(No Model.)
W. E. HARDIN.
SPOKE SOQKBT. 8 No. 377,893. Patented Feb 14,1888.
I INYBNTOR: mwwzz WITNESSES: i
ATTQRNEYS.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. HARDIN, OF MONTEREY, KENTUCKY.
SPOKE-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,893, dated February 14, 1888.
Application filed September 28,1887. Serial No.250,903. (No model.) I
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. HARDIN,
of Monterey, in the county of Owen and State of Kentucky, have invented new and Improved Devices for Uniting Spokes and Fellies of Wheels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to a device which is to-be applied to the felly of a wheel and to receive and retain the outer end of the spoke, and it is especially applicable foruse where a spoke has become broken at its tenon or a felly so split as to not hold the spoke and it is desired to continue its use or to replace a broken spoke without taking the wheel-apart;
and it consists in the formation or construction of the clip adapted to be applied to the felly and for the reception of the end of the spoke, all substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of a portion of the fellies of a "vehicle-wheel, showing clips constructed under the present invention as applied thereto, some parts being broken away and in section for better illustration. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one side of a clip detached. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through same on line as a: of Fig. 2,, and Fig. 4is a cross-section on line y y of Fig. 4.
In the drawings, Arepresents the felly, and
B the spokes, and in newly constructing a wheel the spokes, instead of being joined to the felly by mortise and tenon, as at a, may be joined by the employment of the clip-O, secured on the inner periphery of the felly by screws or bolts b passing through its body portion D, which has sockets 0 therein, of form and size to receive the end of the spoke or the tenon formed thereon.
The clips 0 may be also secured to the felly by rivets passing through holes bin their overlyinglip portions 1) and through the felly from side to side thereof. These clips 0 may form the means for connecting and securing the sections of the felly, as seen at d in Fig. 1, being of sufficient length to overlap each section a suitable distance, and screwed or bolted to the sections of the felly by screws passing through such overlapping portions, the felly, and tire.
The sockets c of the clips are of circular, elliptical, rectangular, or other suitable shape, formed by the projections or walls f g, and, as shown, the one end wall and the side Walls, f, are formed on and integrally with the body portion, while the end wall, g, is comprised in an angular lug or extension formed upon a plate, E, lying in a groove or way, h, in the body portion D of the clip, said plate being provided with a screw-hole, k, coincident, when the plate is in place, with the screw-hole k' of said body portion, said plate being also provided with an inner or forward extension, I,
The utility of a clip of the character de-' scribed is found principally in the event of a spoke becoming broken, as at its tenon close up to the felly or a felly becoming split, when,
by securing the clip on the felly, the spoke or v felly may again be rendered serviceable, or a new spoke may in many instances, by using the present device, replace one broken without the necessity of taking the wheel apart, the advantages of which are obvious. work, by using this clip at the joints of the felly-sections the flattening of the wheel at these points will be prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an article of the'ch'aracter described, the combination, with the body portion adapted to be secured to the inner peri phery of the felly having projection or wall, of a plate having projection or wall adapted to lie upon and be secured to said body portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In an article of the character described, the combination, with the body portion adapted to be secured to the inner periphery of the felly, having projection or wall f and a groove or way, h, of a-plate, E, having a projection or Wall, 9, adapted to lie in said way and to be In new secured to'said body portion, substantially as to be secured to the inner periphery ofthe felly, and for the purpose described.
having projection or wall fand a groove or 3. In an article of the character described, way, 71-, of a plate having projection or Wall g the combination, with the body portion adapted and extension Z, adapted to lie in said way and 1 5 tobe secured to theinnerpe'riphery of the felly, I to be secured to said body portion, substanhaving projection or wall f, of a plate, E, hav tially as and for the purpose described.
ing projection or wall 9 and extensionl adapted to be secured to said body portion, substan- W ILLIAM HARDIN' tially as and for the purpose described. Witnesses:
4. In an article of the character described, BEN. MESSINK, the con1bi11atio11,with thebodyportion adapted J. F. SCOTT.
