Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL Bnnosrnm, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Middletown, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding boxes, and the main object thereof is to provide selfcontained means for maintaining the members thereof in position when set up for packing articles therein, such as clothing and the like.
A further object is to provide tongues, in the material of which said boxes are made, in each of the members of said box which are superimposed when said box is set up, the tongue of one member becoming interlocked with the thumb hole formed in another member when the tongue thereof is forced out of initial position.
A further object is to so locate the tongues in the several members as to insure the register thereof in complemental members, or parts thereof.
A further object is to make the outermost tongue smaller than the contiguous one, whereby said outer tongue will resume its initial position after the intermediate tongue has been engaged in the inner member thumb hole, and thus leave no opening in the outer surface of the box when set up.
A further object is to form opposite box ends or sides of an upwardly directed outer wall member, an inwardly and downwardly directed flap integral therewith, and intermediate fiaps integral with the adjacent box wall members, the sides when the box ends are thus three-ply, or the ends when the sides are three-ply.
A further object is to cut-crease the doubly turned member, the end as shown, for a greater part of its length, but leaving the same uncut but score-creased at the ends of said member, for strength, said cut-crease and score-crease occurring on the line where the upwardly directed wall member is again bent downwardly, and insures the bending in correct place.
My invention is fully set forth in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the same parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my in vention, partly set up, and the folding operation being shown; Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof, looking in the direction of a set up end; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a partial section taken on the line 'll of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank previous to being folded; Fig. 6 is a plan view of a an l fication previous to folding; Fig. T j: fin: mentary, perspective, view showirg method of setting up the form sho n in Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a view of the blank thereof, previous to folding and stitching into the fat shape shown in Fig. 6.
In 1 to 5, inclusive, I have shown a present preferred form of my invention comprising a blank consisting of a main member (I having side members (1. formed by creasing on the lines a and end memhers (1 formed by creasing on the lines 6 only one being shown in Fig. 5, the ends of the side members being free from the end members because of slits a, and said end members are of approximately twice the height of the side members, in the completed box, and have cutting creases on lines 6 to within approximately one and one-half inches from the ends of said members, said one and one-half inch portions having scoring creases, l instead of the cutting crease, whereby the uncut portions, though scored, will maintain a degree of strength to keep the corners in place, both the cutting and scoring creases definitely locating the positions at which bending is to occur, and the ends of the side members a are adapted to be bent on lines as in line with the lines 6 the slits a permitting the bending of said ends independei'itly of the members Z). In setting up this form, the side members are first bent upwardly on the lines a and the ends thereof are turned inwardly on the lines 11", after which the ends are bent upwardly on the lines 1 and the portions thereof being bent inwardly and downwardly on the lines 5 to inclose the previously inturned ends of the side members, and one part of the box is ready for securing the parts in position, it being understood that the box and cover are identical in construction except, possibly, in size.
My means for locking the box members togetlni-r consists in a plurality of tongues b for the main box end members and b for the portions b thereof, and a for the ends of the side members, said tongues being formed by substantially semicircular cuts in the box material, and the tongues 5 a and adjacent each side of the box, are so located as to be in absolute register when the members are arranged as described, and it will be noted that the tongues b are smaller than are the tongues a and b for a reason which will be apparent later.
With the members in the positions described, and as clearly shown in Fig. 1, pressure on each of the tongues I)", on the outer surface of the box, forces the tongues a and b inwardly, the tongues a passing into the spaces vacated by corresponding tongues b and are engaged therein to lock the ends of the sides and the portions 6 together, this being clearly shown in Fig. 3, but, because of their smaller size, the tongues b are not so engaged but resume their initial positions and thus avoid openings in the exterior box surface, and'it'will thus be seen that the members of the box are securely locked together.
In boxes of considerable width I will provide tongues b and b, of equal size, in the end members and which lock in the manner already described, and I may also employ such tongues in the box sides if desired, it being noted that the ends of the box sides do not extend as far as the tongues b and b and, therefore, only the main and folded portions of the end members are locked together.
In Figs. 6. to 8, inclusive, is shown a modification in that the box end portions and the ends of the sides are secured together by staples c, or by stitching, in the manufacture of the box, the blank being similar to that described, but ,in this alternative form I score the ends of the sides at an angle, as shown at 0 whereby said ends may be bent on such lines and be pressed flat with the end portions b thereover; to bring the members into box formation the side Walls are raised perpendicularly, as shown in Fig. 7, this movement tending to unfold the ends of the side members on the lines 0 and, if the end walls be raised at this time, the side members are bent on the lines a. to form the box corners, the ends of the members b being slightly raised to permit such side member movement and to pass said ends of the members b over and within the members a, where the parts are flattened,
after which the tongues may be locked as hereinbefore described.
In either form, the 'box and cover are paclged and shipped flat, whereby less room is required for storage and a consequent saving in labor and paper for wrapping results, but the basis of this application is in the locking tongues as described and, res serving the right to modify the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A folding box, comprising body, side and end members, said side and end members overlapping and said end members being formed of two portions overlapping each other, and tongues formed in said members in register with each other, whereby the tongues of one member may be forced into the tongue spaces of another member to lock said members together, the outer tongues in said end members being smaller than the two registering tongues, whereby they may resume their initial positions and thus avoid openings in the exterior box surface.
